One of the most underrated cameras out there is the Pentax ME/ME Super. Pentax glass is great (see tijmendal's thread). The ME body is all metal, super small, and has a HUGE viewfinder.

While I am not very familiar with them, Minoltas are pretty underrated. I have heard good things about the glass and the bodies are cheapish too. My camera shop sells Minolta primes in a disorganized bin for $7 alongside crummy old tele zooms.

I seen a couple FM2s around 50 quid on gumtree and shit, forgot about exchange rates existing tho haha. I bought my girlfriend an om20 and 50mm 1.8, cost like 30 quid ($51 don't hate me) and it's spot on, wouldn't really need anything else.
 
anybody have experience with takumar lenses? im thinking the 1.4 s-m-c or super tak, but im concerned about the yellowing and they are somewhat expensive. should i get a 1.4 or save some money and get the 1.8?
 
just purchased an original spotmatic, super takumar 50 1.4 (really low serial number so it may be the 8 element version, ill see when i get it), super takumar 135 3.5, and a few rolls of generic film and a soligar teleconverter (was included in the auction), everything looks very lightly used and still has all the cases and hoods, for around 100. stoked

now just to get a m42-eos converter and a few rolls of decent film and im all set

only downside was that the seller was one of those people that gets stuff at estate sales, so they didnt really know too much about what the stuff was or how to test it (it was listed as one takumar lens, one soligor lens and one minolta lens, and looking at the pictures it was two super takumars, a soligor teleconverter and a minolta hood) but with a two week no-questions-asked return policy, i figured may as well take a look myself. if it ends up all being shit ill be out $10 for the return shipping

my friend is offering his Ricoh Diacord for $40 to me. i'm going to nyc next week and I'm sure i could get some good stuff with it, but i already have a few 35mm cameras. go for it or save it and spend it in the city?

There's one rule I go by when it comes to camera bags.. and that's that your camera bag should be as ugly and undesirable to a thief as you wish the camera inside of it is. This is why I go for bags that don't shout 'I have a leica M" or "I have a 5D and a bunch of red rings" inside of them.

I mean, that would certainly do it...

but really, just get a super non-descript bag that doesn't look like anything worth a damn. I use a faded green canvas shoulderbag from the 70's that my dad gave me if I'm shooting street stuff or traveling.

Exactly! I use the same logic for my ski bag. I use a bland, green LL Bean hiking bag from the 90's. I'm tired of having my shiney new stuff stolen.
 
my stuff i bought to get started on film got in today... fuckin stoked, the person had no clue about any of it, and i scored.

super takumar 50 1.4 is pretty much brand new, hardly any yellowing at all; super takumar 135 is a little stiff on one side of the focus when you are turning it; all the "generic, wall mart brand" film they included ended up being fuji superia 400, which isnt great but its far from bad

my final set up is pentax spotmatic (amazing condition, nothing besides some scratches on the baseplate and it works perfectly), tokina 28 f/2.8, super takumar 50 f/1.4 and super takumar 135 f/3.5

now just to get the eos adapter and im good to go
 
I have that same Tokina design in F-mount. Pretty fantastic lens for a 3rd party maker.

I had the f2.5 SMC 135mm for a while. The 3.5 is definitely sharper.

is there any way to tell when they were made (based on the serial or something), or should i just use it and see how it turns out?

Shoot it at 100 or 200 and process normally. The "general rule" is one stop over for every 10 years expired. Film doesn't really go 'bad', it just slowly loses sensitivy and you might get color shift or more grain than normal, hence you overexpose.
 
Just shoot it. Chances are it's totally fine. Ive shot expired Superia that wasn't frozen or anything and it came out pretty damn good. I doubt it's a decade old or more. I only tend to worry about expired film if it's either black and white or very very old slide film - in which case one will give you film to fuck with (IE: use it with caffinol or other alternative B&W chemicals, or in the case of slide film, mega cray cray artz)
 
there's some fookin dope shots going down here, like every photo posted has been sick. I'mma post my next roll I develop, copped a black and white processing tank for like £5 so stoked

Hey I've got a 35mm Vivitar with a 28-70mm lens that I've been using for like 7 months. I shoot mostly black and white (other than my dslr) but I'm gonna start shooting some color. I was wondering if any of you have played with or use any medium format cameras. I saw a guy yesterday at a fair with a sweet Bronica medium format camera that looked really dope. Talked to the guy for about a half and hour and he made it sound interesting as far as how the pictures look. it was a Bronica SQ-Ai. If you got some examples I would love to see them. Thanks

I was going to purchase a SQ-A, but I was steered away from it as it just isn't as refined as a modular MF camera should be. I don't remember what the issues were specifically, but someone here should.

I have recently started shooting my Mamiya RZ67 and other than its massive size it's an awesome camera.

They are built like shit and their lenses are shit and just about everything is shit about them for the same price as non shit mamiya gear.
 
Yeah Bronnies are kinda meh when you compare them to other MF systems that are just as affordable, or in some cases cheaper.

My friend traded in his Pentax k1000 with some lenses + like $100 for a Yashica T4 at this camera shop. Well two days later it broke so they gave him that Canon p&shit as a 'replacement'; I chuckled.
 
You know, you could go out and shoot the camera you have and spend money on film instead of buying more shitty cameras at a thrift store like a stereotypical film hipster

Mamiya RZ67 help:

I was just standing outside in the rain for 15 minutes while I thought my RZ was exposing a potentially cool shot of some clouds below a peak. I depressed the shutter button with my handy-dandy shutter release and after probably 15-30 seconds (I wasn't intently watching the time as it was such a long exposure) a very faint, high pitched beeping noise emenated from the camera with a small twitchy click noise following. It sounded like it could very well be the shutter closing. So after the 15 minutes I unlicked the cable release and no sounds came from the camera.

So what the hell happened? Is the bulb setting limited to a certain time?
 
Found This eos 500, got some batteries for er and a roll of 35mm today and already went through the whole rolll of film andd will post my best photos tommorow hopefully.Love that it's an EF lens mount so all my lenses for my T3i work with it!

You might need to use the electronic cable release that plugs into the front to unlock more time. Honestly idk I didn't do many long exposures with my RZ. If it does limit at 30 seconds that doesnt surprise me THAT much but still odd.

Wow! I am really jealous that you can mount your other lenses to that 35mm, that's sick. Do you think that would be possible with my Vivitar V3800N if I got an Adapter?????

Novoflex will have one, but you are far cheaper off getting a new film camera in the same lens mount as your digital camera.

Thanks man, ya its probably just smarter to sell my vivitar with the 28-70mm lens and buy a canon 35mm.

We should do this as an NS thing. Let's start a thread, pick a start date, and do it. It will be awesome. Come up with rules - like everyone involved post 5 best shots at end of each month, nothing is posted in the thread besides photos and discussion of those photos.

Let it be a continues stream, also considering developing and scanning times for some.

A river, of contrast and artz must flow unhindered by rules.
 
I'm totally up for it. My upcoming year will be dedicated to photography, so this would be (another) perfect project for the next year.

Also: Laurens (and others), I've been selected to be a trainee at Foam (Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam), which is fucking rad. Especially because there were almost 250 applicants.
