FCP7 Transition question

I've been using FCP7 for about a year now but in the last few months I've been having a problem with the preset transitions such as additive dissolve not being able to snap to two clips.

It'll snap to either clip, just not connecting them.

Screen shot upon request

Thanks

its probably because its the very edge of a clip and there isn't enough information of video on one side to complete a full fade on either side of the cut.

Yeah that's what I thought at first, but I've got snapping on and I've also zoomed all the way in to check for gaps and I can't see any.

Maybe that the clip is too short?

I get that sometimes and the transition doesn't work. The clip needs to be a certain length.

he just means if you're trying to use cross/additive dissolve it needs a bit of extra length at the clip for the dissolve part of it into the next clip. Pretty much wherever the effects ends, is where the clip needs to be able to play too. Basically what it's doing is just slowly opaquing out of the clip from 100 to 0 percent. Hope that helped it's kind of weird to explain, just make sure that the clip your using it on isn't on the beginning/or last second of the clip

this explains it

http://www.geniusdv.com/news_and_tutorials/2009/11/using_handles_in_final_cut_pro.php

"Handles in Final Cut Pro are basically the extra frames of unused video or audio that are on either side of the In & Out points in an edit...

... If you start recording right when the action starts, you won't have enough footage to "fade in from black"..."

yeah they pretty much summed it up ^

means you just need to trim a little off the ends and beginnings of the clips you are trying to fade/dissolve. for the fade to work, video is still being played while opacity is changed in the transition. If the video stops and there is no more footage on the end of the clip, there isn't video to dissolve into the other one, it only has enough video to work with on the front end.

Best way to fix it is by just trimming the ends on each clip back a bit, then re-connecting them and re-adding the cross dissolve or whatever transition
