FCP X JUST RELEASED...

Tons of reasons. Why should I have to slow down everything I shoot.. or slow it down to 40%? What if I want to slow down something that is shot in 24p? It wont work. While shooting live sports, I do not see a reason not to shoot 60p. It gives you the most freedom. Unless I 100% know that something is not going to be slowed down or involve a ton of motion then I shoot 24. Obviously I shoot all non sports in 24.

Say for instance I am filming a race. Why would i film in auto race in 24p? I obviously wouldnt want it all slowed down 40%, but the more frames the better. 60p is a smoother image.

Why do you think ESPN broadcasts in 720p60 (they would do 1080p60 if it could be broadcasted). Its a smoother image for sports and not all of their footage is slowed down.

I think it's just a personal taste. I don't like the look of footage that isn't conformed to 23.98. I'm also a big fan of restricting myself in that way because it creates consequence, and I pigeonhole myself into adapting and progressing. Too much freedom and I become relient on it. Sure I can shoot everything in 60p and have ultimate freedom, but I feel the motion quality of the footage suffers greatly in doing this.

I've seen auto race footage shot in 24p, and I actually like it more. To me, cinematography is an artistic interpretation, not an accurate documentation. Sure, the 24p footage has motion blurring like crazy, but I prefer that because a blurred car captures the essence of speed better than a car with hardly any blur.

I've been filming 90% of my action footage in 24p, and as long as I can hone my panning abilities to the point of being perfectly in sync with the movement of the subject, the only thing that gets blurred is the background. I think a linear skier composed upon a heavily motion-blurred background fittingly portrays the speed and intensity of the trick.

I've been liking the look of the 24p ski stuff I've seen this year (Boy's Club and Real Ski Fi) and I actually have decided to switch next season. I think I will be doing just 24p with some 30p on stuff I want to slow down.

no, because you are seeing 60 frames per second. There is too much information crammed in there. What we perceive as motion blur isn't just shutter speed...

I might be wrong, but I think what Bentley is trying to get at is that you can shoot at 60p, then if you want to you have the option of dropping 2/3 frames and have it become 24p.

Just got a copy to play around with this morning, and I must say that FCP X is the worst piece of shit backwards leap that editing software has seen in a decade. No EDL/XML/AAF import/export? No dual monitor support?! No compatibility with FCP7 projects? Everyone said it was bad, but this seems crazy.

normally they dont work but i torrented FCP X, compressor and motion and updated them and somehow they still work. I have all the soundtrack components, the quicktime plugins, motion content, etc.

I just lol'd real hard at the above post. That video was hilarious, does it really suck that badly though, Phillip DeFranco said it was great. I'm hearing a lot of mixed opinions.

I really want to buy Final Cut, so when I buy a macbook and get $100 from the app store I can use that and buy Final Cut Pro X, but from what I've seen in this thread, it might not be worth it. I just don't want to use iMovie anymore... what should I do!?

If you're an amateur doing web edits, FCPX isn't as bad as everyone makes it sound. In fact, it's actually a great program for that purpose (strictly in terms of abilities). The real beef people have is the lack of very necessary and BASIC things: XML, OMF, multicam, RED support, the list goes on. Thing things are far from necessary to someone who is just delving into editing, so your only real hurdle is learning the (what some would call) atrocious layout. Apple is probably going to stick to this layout from now on (unfortunately), so getting accustomed to it wouldn't hurt you.

Also, in case anybody is looking for a way to work around some of FCPXs shortcomings, here's a great article:

http://pogue.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/06/23/professional-video-editors-weigh-in-on-final-cut-pro-x/

what!! i personally love DVD studio pro, it's not that advanced perhaps but it makes DVD building mad easy.
and color is the best color grading tool i have used.

i really hope they won't die. soundtrack pro i do not care so much about; never used it.

FCP X, Motion 5, and Compressor 4 are all extremely easy to torrent and don't require serial codes. I would highly recommend going this route first with FCP X as it is so very different, and if it works for you then grab yourself a disk from Apple after you give it a whirl.

It seems like a bridge between iMovie and FCP 7 so far, so I really don't understand the marketing strategy. Professionals need upgrades, not revamped software that cuts certain types of support and compatibility.

Keep FCP 7 but definitely play with the new version. Motion 5 and Compressor 4 seem like good upgrades at first glance but I honestly haven't spent more than a few minutes with either yet. It's actually looking like a great option for 90% of the people on this site (get real guys, we aren't all pros), as it has a more advanced interface and ability than iMovie, but doesn't cost $1000. My editing skills are growing but limited, and I've come a long way since iMovie days. Still, FCP 7 is a bit much for me.

Of course if you torrent to keep and not to try, then it's all free to you. But everyone has different beliefs on stealing software, so this post probably applies to both sides in some way.

Well I may have spoken too soon.

You can still use DVD studio Pro because you can just import a dvd file from compressor. You do not need XML support for that.

Color on the other hand seems to be completely dead, since there really is no point since you cant import a FCPX project to color 1.5.

Soundtrack Pro on the other hand is actually coming out with something new I believe. I guess it is built into the new Logic Studio. For FCP X users, that is pointless though since the lack of XML. Well maybe I am missing something there.

All of what apple is doing does not match up. I guess people actually are rather impressed with Motion 5 too and say it is a big upgrade with no drop off unlike FCP X.

Apple is either holding something back from everyone (highly doubt it), or just really messed this up.

They may have lost their professional users for good if they do not upgrade or come out with something rather quickly.

The beauty of film making is that there really is no accurate documentation of what is right and what is wrong.

I see your side of things and how you like things that way. I really do. I love 24p (including your over cranked shots in my short film back in 09), but for right now I like the freedom and smooth look of 60p for most of my action shots.

I actually havnt shot much 60p in a long time, but I would at least like the ability to use my 1080p60 footage native at pro res when I do.

Maybe ill head out to the track one weekend before my next paid shoot and see how some 24p race footage looks.

He means he wished they just put in upgrades to the existing FCP 7 instead of creating a leap from iMovie to FCP and calling it an upgrade.

Fortunately apple is not calling FCP X an "upgrade." They are saying its an entirely new program and era, which is why its FCP X V.1.0 or whatever.

Unfortunately "FCP" seems to be dead, since FCP X should be FCE X like Landis said. Or even iMovie X.

Unless the first update in 6 months brings XML, better audio synching, layout for external NTSC monitors, multicam (they already claim this will be in), a new color, and a few other things, then FCP will be dead.

They even stopped sales and support for FCP 7.

I've been looking at this and it's tempting me. I'm by no means an expert or professional so I think that a program like FCP 7 would put me in over my head. However, I have mastered iMovie and am wanting a more powerful program with some better features (actually, iMvoie is driving me nuts, I'm not much of a fan because it's so goddam basic). Would this be a good program for a medium-level editor? I'm self-taught, so I've never taken any classes or read any books, just used Premier Elements and iMovie and learned through trial and error.

From what I've experienced so far this is a good stepping stone between the two, and if Apple makes all the updates they are saying they are going to it will be almost as powerful as FCP 7.

Cool, that's what I was hoping to hear. Could I get away with buying just FCP, or are Motion and Compressor necessities? If you could, post some updates in here and keep us posted on how the program's working. I'll need to look into it and determine if I can spend the money or not.

motion = not necessity
compressor, on the other hand, is amazing (in my opinion). i use it every time i export and i've also used it to just transcode footage

Yeah, but with quicktime pro, compressor is not a necessity either. Combined with mpegstream clip and compressor is worthless.

It's similar, i export full quality of out FCP then use quicktime as compressor pretty much. It leaves me with a full quality copy and a compressed copy. Even though it kind of adds one more step, i like having the two different compressions.

You cant really do any batches with quicktime pro, but that might be one of the only differences.

Compressor also does have a few more settings. For the basic make a video and put it online, there is absolutely no need for compressor.

I like compressor more than quicktime pro or just quicktime exporting, but I find myself using quicktime just because it is faster and takes all of 5 seconds to save a SCM first.

I prefer Quicktime Pro because it's faster than FCP or Compresser. Aside from that, Compresser is too intricate for my uses; less is more.

Here's a newb question: Compressor basically takes a full HD video and maintains the quality while making it a smaller file size. Correct?

haha me... fuck transcoding. but yea i hear final cut x is a big disappointment. Bout time you guys switched over to adobe anyways

fuck no, I have faith that support and FCS will come back and continue to be supported.

Native editing of h.264 files isn't important in my eyes...I prefer everything in ProRes LT. Why would you want to work in that shitty codec?

And Premiere's UI is far to redundant for me...there are multiple settings controlling the same thing, and you have to manually adjust them separately when it could be done with one control. Also, its file checking system is whack, leading to stability issues.

i like compressor because when i finish a project, i just let it export overnight and i do a personal export, vimeo export, and facebook/ns export. so yeah the batch function is awesome for me

Hmm this is quite interesting.

Apple pretty much says in the next few weeks there will be XML, OMF, EDL, and AAF support, although they are not going to be in charge of it and are leaving it to third partys? That sounds to me like spending some more money. They also claim that multicam is coming shortly as well. No time period on that though.

The XML support they claim will be in just a "few weeks."

They also say you can export your project in OMF and AAF for other sound editing software. But once again, you have to use a third party, automatic duck, which is $500.

Seems like FCP X is a cheap prosumer program that will eventually be able to be updated to a professional product that will end up costing the same as FCS or more.

I looked at some of the new features and thought it looked pretty sick. I tried to torrent it, but Apple was on top of their shit and I couldn't figure out how to crack it.

Remind me next week and ill give you my login shit so you can throw it on your comp.

I havnt messed with it to much yet because I havent had time and I know my school is probably switching to something else.

I heard if you watch some tutorials though and learn how to use it and shit it isnt too bad (besides the obvious missing things).

Im also going to try out Avid as well when I get back in town.
