Real women have posted images of themselves in their swimwear for a 'fatkini' gallery asa retaliation against society's obsession with super-slim summer bodies.

In an age where Victoria's Secret models are viewed as an ideal, 31 women sent in their images to prove otherwise.

Gabi Gregg, a writer for xojane.com, posted a request for the images, to inspire women with similar bodies as her own (a U.S. size 18) to feel good about wearing a bikini.

Ms Gregg wrote: 'Our culture is so obsessed with having a "beach ready bod," that the mere idea of someone my size in a swimsuit, let alone a bikini, is shocking to most.'

She continued: 'I know first-hand how inspiring it can be to see people with bodies that look similar to my own feeling confident and happy on the beach in something other than a Hawaiian-print skirted one piece'.

The bikini has come to inspire both dread and awe as our culture increasingly enshrines physical perfection through magazine features that encourage women to be bikini-ready for summer, and the constant trolling of other women by women.

Rather than being a statement about health, which it could have easily turned into, the gallery appears to be an endorsement of diversity, and an statement that no one particular size or shape of woman has a monopoly on being considered attractive or even ‘normal’.

The women featured in the gallery look vibrant and confident, regardless of their body-shapes or sizes.

While the writer and fashion blogger has received a wave of support from readers who applaud her confidence, some have been quick to judge.

There have been comments that Ms Gregg isn't 'flabby' enough to be self-conscious, and her 'toned, hourglass-shaped' body makes it easier for her to put a picture of herself online.

Another commenter wrote: 'I will be the combo breaker cause the sugar coating sometimes needs to stop. Sure you can love your body and flaunt it proudly, but objectively some girls needs to realize when an outfit just DOESN'T GO WITH YOUR BODY TYPE. Sometimes it just doesn't fit right. Sorry, but it's just how fashion goes, for thick and thin bodies.'

Ms Gregg, who posted the article today, tweeted earlier: 'Already annoyed by the xojane comments. and I know they're only going to get worse as the general public finds the article.

Of her own body, Ms Gregg said: 'I do acknowledge that I have some level of body privilege (but um, for the record: I totally have flab, stretch marks and cellulite, you just can't see it in the photos I posted due to the high waisted bottoms and the distance of the shots).'

She added: 'Hopefully this gallery, which features lots of body diversity, proves that it's not only "toned" fat girls who can feel confident hitting the beach in a two piece.'

That first post was all copypasta.

My thoughts- Society is headed WAYYYY downhill. Fat does not mean you have to hate yourself, but it also does not make you healthy and vibrant, or a ideal body. This shit drives me insane.

99% of fat girls in bikinis are gross and thats just the way it is. i guess its nice that she can [supposedly] feel good about it, but that doesnt make it attractive to me.

But in all seriousness, this is fucking stupid. I have nothing against people that are overweight, But I feel like there are more ways in which they could preach their message nahmean? Just my .02

exactly.

the whole "society idealizes a super thin woman!" is false. Modeling and being a celebrity does. No one else.

There's a reason why these girls shouldn't wear bikinis...because they're disgusting. It's not even a case of them being just a little overweight, these are quite clearly people who have no control.

Sorry, if you can't care about your own body, I can't care about you.

No its not that we are disgusted by the swimsuit, well yeah its gross as shit, but we also are disgusted by how fat you have gotten with out seeing the problem with it and think its not your fault and blame it on society and try to get pissed at the girls who actually work hard to look good. There I said it. lose some weight and get on your feet lazy people. Jesus Christ.

Yea instead of getting beach ready bodies, let's all just never exercise, eat shitty, and spend billions more on healthcare in our fatass country.

1) Models in fashion magazines are too thin. It is not realistic or healthy2) Therefore, the proper, reasonable, and healthy response is to be morbidly obese.

#fatwomanlogic

What the fuck, those chicks posted as comforting would be like trying to stick your dick in a tooth pick....fuck a woman needs some moat on the bones....I don't want to be grinding my hip bones with hers as I'm trying to rock her world in bead.

Man fuck these fat bitches who wanna feel good about themselves so they blame society for their opinion of beauty. There are a lot of chicks that everyone thinks are hot that I find are way too skinny but damn, I don't like fat nasty bitches either. Take care of yourself.

That's gross. You shouldn't be proud with your body if you look like that. Saying that it's ok to be fat is sending girls a message that is worse than the magazines that emphasize a smaller

*smaller than image body type. If you don't have a beach ready body, stop eating so much. society shouldn't have to listen to you spew bullshit about how you are beautiful when really you are not and need to go for a fucking bike ride

blahblahblahblahblahblah bottom line they arent fucking healthy human beings. that is what disgusts me about this whole fat vs. skinny debate. if you have a little extra on you and arent borderline diabetic, flaunt that shit girl. but if you are borderline (or already are) diabetic, then hit the gym/nutrionist/plastic surgeon and get that shit fixed

fat people are killing themselves to prove society wrong. and guess what, society doesnt give a shit that you dont feel good about yourself. only you do

I believe that society should accept plus sized women and celebrate them as individuals, but by no means argue that they're beatiful in their bikinis. These women are just as unhealthy as their Victoria's Secret counterparts! If it was an ad for women who were all in a healthy BMI range I could understand it. But a lot of these women are blatantly fat. That's just as dangerous as being too thin healthwise.

our society is fucked up but that is fucked up. fucking disgusting. stop eating unhealthy fucking food and hit the damn gym then put on a bikini.

I think girls being 100lbs and under is like crazy and the fact that is hot is crazy but shit 300lbs isnt beautiful. A little bit of meat a nice thick ass and thick legs is all I need not a fucking 5 course buffet of belly fat.

HA!

No. There is no equivalence. I won't presume to know the medical details of any of these women, but there's nothing unhealthy about for example this bodyweight

On the other hand, the women in the OP are almost certainly going to suffer from chronic disease and perhaps even die due to their weight.

Eating disorders are very bad for your health, it doesn't matter if it is obesity or anorexia. These obese chicks trying to model are just as bad as anorexic models not to mention they are a serious eye sore. Also they are not going to change the definition of beauty, most men think fat chicks are ugly, sorry to break it to them but that's how it is.

I agree. To Jailbait- While I also don't know the personal habits and medical histories of VS models, I can tell you that most of them if naturally fit and skinny are not unhealthy, merely working with what god gave them and what VS feels like using. Obviously a great deal of photoshop/makeup/artistry goes on with those models so that they are often portrayed as unrealistically beautiful, but not unrealistically thin per se. My wife is 5'9" and 125 and is like that for no damn reason other than genetics, and she is quite healthy. Obviously, fashion models are a different story.

Just google untouched up pictures of the models and you will see that they look quite normal, and probably not that unhealthy at all, most of the time (still not sure about that one picture of Candice Swanepoel, must have been an anomaly). You also notice that their tits are not taped up or just plain fake, they may or may not have a lot of makeup on, fake tan, no photoshop, etc.

For example- non photoshopped candid of Candice, just with full makeup and tit tape and all that. The other models are similar. Not unhealthy at all if I had to guess.

It's crazy how many guys think that is a healthy weight. Yes the model is hot and we would like to think she is healthy however in reality almost every model is underweight. Everyone has a healthy weight they should be at however there are a handful girls (including a vast majority models) don't try to obtain that weight, they want to be thinner than that healthy weight. A huge issue with pictures of models is that it is very easy to touch up a picture of an underweight model in order to make her look healthy. Photoshop can remove visible rib cages along with other boney parts of the models to make them look like they are healthy even if they truly aren't. Most men need a real reality check, although these models are really damn hot most of them are not healthy.

I agree with everything jailbait said besides the celebrating them comment. Being underweight is just as bad as being overweight, it just affects you in different ways.

Being underweight a little bit to look better is not a big deal. It's a balance and it's not like they're that far from healthy... And weight isn't everything when it comes to health anyways

I too disagree with these ladies, but I feel as though some fat people have more trouble than they're getting credit for. I believe genetics has something to do with being fat. I know my mom works out everyday, doesn't drink, and eats fairly well, and she is still semi overweight. While it does help, because her parents are about 3 times the size of her and don't work out, her genes make her genetically larger than normal. I think I got my point across, but no matter how much some people work out or eat right, they just can't shed the pounds. Don't get me wrong either, I am completely against fat women wearing bikinis, its disgusting.

True, but we don't have an epidemic of underweight people in the US. The models that people think of when they think of unhealthily thin are models for high fashion designers and magazines like Vogue. Most swimsuit and underwear models are actually quite a healthy weight because being a healthy weight gives you ass and tits that everyone wants to see in bathing suits and underwear.
