movie recommendation thread for lesser known or under appreciated movies. yes, some of you might have seen some of the movies listed no one is claiming they are the only ones ever to see that movie...

post title, genre, and super brief summary.

Man from nowhere

korean action/thriller

Young girls mom gets killled and she gets taken, a former american secret agent going on a rampage to get her back. its like the korean, and much better, version of 'taken'

sooooo badass.

subtitled.

I Saw the devil

korean thriller/action/horror

a guys wife is killed, he goes out for revenge... ends up hunting down the killer only to beat him senseless, let the dude heal up, and attack him again... several times... so badass

^ both those are on netflix

Special

Dark comedy

A guy who is depressed goes on a trial drug and it makes him think he has super powers... that sounds funny but it is actually rather sad and dark

Scanner Darkley

An undercover cop gets addicted to drugs and is tasked to spy on himself, ends up going to treatment. This movie is more well known and its hard to describe without spoilers.

Chocolate

Thai martial arts

A autistic young girl kicks major ass to help save her dying mother

Sunshine

Sci-fi

This is a danny boyle film (trainspotting) in the future our sun is dying and a team is tasked to shoot a huge atomic bomb into it to sort of "reignite" it. The story goes deeper into the mind of humanity, spirituality, and other stuff above and beyond the base-line plot.

lets here them.

inb4 typical nsg

god bless america

dark comedy

wouldn't say its fantastic, but its an interesting flick for sure. this dude just goes around killing annoying people in society/tv.

This movie called "Avatar"

really underground shit. made on a low budget, small name director etc. highly recommend it.

Mr. Nobody.

Sci-fi/drama. Not too underground, but I'm sure many haven't heard of it. One of the more emotionally stimulating sci-fi movies I have scene, it analyzes decision making and basically relates that to the meaning of life. Can seem a bit silly and far fetched in places, but I like to think in the end it comes together nicely.

Flame and Citron, excellent WWII movie about Danish resistance fighters. If you have an interest in fantasically made movies and history watch it.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley-if you're irish, watch it. If you like history, watch it.

Both are awesome movies

From 2001, was rated well so some of you have probably heard of/seen this one but-

K-PAX - Sci-Fi, Drama

Prot is a patient at a mental hospital who claims to be from a far away Planet. His psychiatrist tries to help him, only to begin to doubt his own explanations.

Really good, the kind of movie that makes you think.

Silent Night - TV Movie, Biography, Drama, War

Fact-based World War II story set on Christmas Eve, 1944, finds a German Mother and her son seeking refuge in a cabin on the war front. When she is invaded by three American soldiers and then three German soldiers, she successfully convinces the soldiers to put aside their differences for one evening and share a Christmas dinner.

Even though it's a tv movie it really well made, highly recommend it.

Also if your gf wants to watch a chick flick and there's no way to convince her otherwise watch The American President. Equal parts history, government/politics, and love story to keep both of you interested. That is if you actually watch the movie while it's playing, cough cough hint hint

Agreed.

Or Michael Collins with Liam Neeson

Touching the Void (On Netflix)

The true story of two climbers and their perilous journey up the west face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes in 1985.

Unreal movie, does an awesome job making you feel like you're there, and it's absolutely terrifying.

Awesome guys! thread is off to a positive start, im definitely checking out these suggestions thanks!

Wolf of Wall Street is fucking dope "I WILL NOT DIE SOBER" haha shit cracks me up everytime goddamn

Rubber (on netflix)

A Quenten Dupiex film that makes fun of Hollywood

When Robert, a tire, discovers his destructive telepathic powers, he soon sets his sights on a desert town; in particular, a mysterious woman becomes his obsession.

It's really weird but is quite funny. Sort of a cult movie. Funny in the same way Napoleon Dynamite is.

Worst fucking move I have ever seen. In no way is funny. In all ways is a waste of time. Would not watch again, but would still watch once.

THANKS OP!!! I am so happy you think this is awesome.

Scanner Darkley

If people like that, Waking Life and Enter The Void are both similar in a sense.

With netflix I feel the best thing you can do is watch random movies. It's hard to find anything "good" in terms of newer stuff. If you dig through and watch random stuff you'll watch some shit movies but you'll find some gems that you'd never even heard of.

I'll try and remember some good examples when I jump back on netflix.

Army of darkness

American. Horror/comedy.

The third install ment of the evil dead seriese. Ash finds himeslf back in time and has to find his way back to his time. While something evils has just awoken.

Also recommend watching all of the evil dead movies. The new one is more horror. Still has some typical evil dead moments.

Ill list off a few other ones to check out just too lazy to write out descriptions on my phone.

Full Metal Jacket

A Clockwork Orange

Bubba ho-tep(or however its spelled)

Blue Ruin, Locke, Momento, Enter the Void, Prince Avalanche, Enemy with jake gyllenhaal, Crash, Moon, Last Ride. Most are on Netflix.

Goodbye Lenin (2003)

It's a German Tragiocomedy

East Germany, the year 1989: A young man protests against the regime. His mother watches the police arresting him and suffers a heart attack and falls into a coma. Some months later, the GDR does not exist anymore and the mother awakes. Since she has to avoid every excitement, the son tries to set up the GDR again for her in their flat. But the world has changed a lot.

Hobo with a Shotgun

A homeless vigilante blows away crooked cops, pedophile Santas, and other scumbags with his trusty pump-action shotgun.

A true must for any B movie fan.

SLC Punk

Great movie about a punk in the 80s in Salt Lake City trying to figure out what to do in the next stage of his life after graduating from college.

this is awesome. so funny when he electrocuted one of the sons and the son is like ahhh he made me cum!

Omnidata's omniscient list of well-known pretentious expirimental arthousy movies that make you seem all cultured and shit:

Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles

The white ribbon

Days of Heaven

L'Atalante

Tokyo Story

Andrei Rublev

The chance that you will enjoy any of these are slim to none, but after seeing them you will feel more culturally enriched and will be able to show off your new-found pretentiousness amongst your peers with utter disdain to their Michael Bay levels of plebness.

Andrei Rublev is even on Youtube in HD in two parts:

Part 1

Part 2

Primer - some guys figure out time travel. used to be on netflix but i dont think it is anymore. mind-fuckery that when finished you will want to watch it a second time to see if you can follow what happened any better. and maybe one more time after that.

There are too many people who have never heard of or seen Animal House. If you are one of those people, go pick it up and watch it.

im pretty sure i watched it, don't remember much of anything about it which to me means it sucked

The Rum Diary

A Johnny Depp film that a lot of people don't know about/haven't seen.

About a journalist (Depp) that moves to Puerto Rico during the 1960's to work at a failing daily newspaper and the craziness of island life that ensues. Also has Amber Heard as the main girl in it.

I have lots but for the sake of getting people to actually take my advice I will only post one.

Brick.

Everyone should watch Brick. It's a noir movie from 2005 set in a high school. It is amazing. It has Joseph Gordon Levitt before anyone knew who the hell he was, too.

Romancing the Stone. Classic 80s adventure movie starring Michael Douglas, Kathleen Turner, and Danny Devito. Car chases, crocodiles, shoot-outs, and priceless jewels.

Stripes. Another classic 80s Ivan Reitman flick. Bill Murray and Harold Ramis join the army. John Candy guest stars.

All I can think of are these French films, but they are all really quite good. Definitely worth a watch.

The Intouchables - Film about a guy who comes from the streets who falls into a job as the caretaker for a quadriplegic millionaire. Super good film with some very funny moments.

The Closet - This one is about a boring guy who pretends to be gay to stop himself from getting fired from his job at a condom factory. Also pretty funny, not as many feels as The Intouchables.

Wasabi - Cheesy Jean Reno film that is based in Japan. He is a police officer that is forced to go to Japan after a woman he used to love dies and leaves him a note. He has a Japanese daughter that he finds out about and has to take care of while she is chased around by Yakuza guys.

Thunderbolt - Not French, but my all time favorite Jackie Chan film. It is horrifyingly bad but at the same time so good. Fast cars, kung fu and bad acting. All you could ever need from a movie.

would recommend both of those. especially I Saw the Devil, so badass.

also in the same dark, gritty, korean film category, check out The Chaser (used to be on netflix).

something about a dirty detective turns pimp realizes his girls are missing/killed off in a fucked up way.

these next two are more light-hearted, but have great fight scenes, good plots, would absolutely check out.

Sukiyaki Western Django: In a strange land where East meets West, two rival gangs are locked in a deadly feud until a lone hero comes to town and tries to restore order.

The Good, the Bad, the Weird: A bounty hunter, a gangster and a train robber unite to find a treasure in 1930s Manchuria, staying ahead of their rivals and the Japanese army.

part of the exploitation films produced after grindhouse was released (which I'd recommend as well- Planet Terror and Deathproof were pretty awesome)

after Grindhouse came out, the directors/producers, in short, ended up making some of the "fake" trailers that opened the movie. also produced was Machete and Machete Kills

Machete got great reviews, has Jessica Alba, Danny Trejo, Steven Segal, DeNiro, and that hot spanish girl I can't remember her name. and I think it's Jeff Fahey (see True Grit for that dude, another great film). Also Lindsey Lohan shows off her rack.

About to watch Machete Kills now, but got significantly worse reviews.

Pulp Fiction. Just in case you haven't seen it. Anything QT.

most of his films I liked, this shouldn't be something "you may not have heard of" though, but might as well bring it up. other movies like it by QT and his buddies; snatch, reservoir dogs, inglorious basterds.

I really liked this one, would also recommend.

another Depp movie that not many people have seen is Dead Man, directed by Jim Jarmusch (for all you wu-tang peoples, he's buddies with RZA, and is heard frequently on the Wu-Tang Meets Indie Culture CD)

great movie, definitely would recommend.

another couple movies you can check out.

Valhalla Rising: some nordic movie, very little words, great cinematography, old badass viking does battle with a bunch of jerks. I'm not super descriptive, but imdb that.

Short Term 12: a drama, coming of age film. Young adults run a home for fucked up kids, tells their stories and the drama that ensues. pretty well done.

Trollhunter: forget what country (Norway?), mockumentary about some college film students that go around looking for poachers and find this "crazy" dude hunting trolls. turns out he is (find that out like 20 minutes in, sue me). well done, funny, thrilling at some points. I enjoyed it

movies you should know about, but just a refresher (also, some movies I'm too lazy to tell you about that used to/are on flix): rounders, city of god, the usual suspects, oldboy (not USA remake), buffalo 66, natural borne killers

some spanish movies I enjoyed:

the devil's backbone: kids at an orphanage (I think), are at the mercy of the nuns, but ghosts are afoot (not a great description, fuck off I'm tired)

pan's labyrinth: look this up, came to theaters worldwide

the last days: just saw this yesterday, about some "disease" that's sweeping the globe. causes people to not be able to go outside. follows two men looking for their families and the problems that ensue with a post-apocalyptic event.

oh and if you haven't seen Ip Man or any of the sequels, just go fucking see it. some of the best martial arts movies I've ever seen. fighting and story is just amazing.

all of this in my shitty opinion on movies. if you watch something and don't like it, eat some nuts.

Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

One of my favorite movies ever. It's a western with Paul Newman in it, about the outlaw and his partner. Longish movie, but has a fantastic plot and is just ugh.

also: I always recommend Iron Sky for a good laugh. Moon Nazis and Sarah Palin as president.

i love that movie

thanks guys.

i am not a huge qt fan.

im going to check out brick

mr nobody seemed interesting but it started slow and wasnt in the mood for that.

here a couple more suggestions that i should mention that ive seen since my op.

waltz with brashir

animated documentary about Lebanese war in 1982. the narrator is trying to recover his memories from that time

dragon

chinese martial arts with donnie yen. has elements of crime drama too. really smart movie. in the same vein as a history of violence

sword of the stranger

anime. a kids family is killed and he is on his own (except his loyal dog) until a wandering samurai helps him

47 ronin

the new one. with keanu reeves. it flopped but it shouldn't have, its epic. if you are a big fan of the original then dont expect a remake... its more of a re-imagining.

place beyond the pines

a popular-ish but definitely lesser-known gosling movie. highly recommend. motorbike stunt rider turned bank robber.

snowpiercer

dystopian movie. on a train. its worth a watch. Chris Evans (captain america) is in it and im a fan of his.

thats all for now. ill post more when they come to mind.
