External Hard drive and my mac!

I have no idea how to format this thing for my mac.. the instructions read: "open Apple Disk Utility and format the drive for your mac".

I can't figure it out. Help?
 
I would have to say that you should just buy one that works automatically for whatever. They are more simple, and less likely to take a shit and lose all your info. Western Digital Mybooks are sick
 
I got a Maxtor one touch 3, and it has a big sticker on the front that says, "for PCs and MACS". 160 GB
 
with externals, usually you dont have to format them, try just plugging it in and putting shit on it
 
ok...plug in your Hard Drive, dont rename it just plug it in...then go to disk utility, then on the right of the screen all of your Hard drives will show up. select the disk that is your external, not by its name, but where it says the size, then the brand, followed by some other numbers and such. Then above that you have a few menus you can go to, First Aid, Erase, Partition, Raid, and Restore.

Go to Partition. Type in the name you want, then for format i use Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or something of the sort. then click partition and your ready to roll!
 
I just plugged in my maxxtor that i assembeled myself and it it was ready to go. For some reason mac doens't have to format as much as windows does. 
 
true, but read my instrunctions before you put anything on your hd, or the next time you boot your computer up, u'll lose everything on the external!
 
i was thinking of gettign one of those. do u know if they can work on both mac and windows without reformat stuff or anything when switch between the 2??
 
my WD passport (a smaller portable version) worked on both my mac and my PC without any reformatting. I plugged it into my mac first, put vid files on, wanted some music on my pc, and put that onto the HD. it seemed to work fine. and yeah western digitals are awesome.
