❗️❗️How do you feel about 120s in the small hills of NY?

Can someone tell me what might happen if an east skier rides 120s at the smaller mountains of NY. I kinda need to know

120 waists? It'll be fine, it's just unnecessary and suboptimal. Slower edge to edge, won't carve as well, heavier, and no situations where it offers an advantage really. But you totally can, and depending on your style it might be a total non-issue. I've had friends who ride 120+ waist skis as their daily ski on the East and that was just their jam

Nothing will “happen”. If those are the skis you have than go shred, it might be a little unnecessary but something will “happen” if you worry about your skis more than getting on the mountain by any means necessary. Good luck.

Yeah, just kinda worried because my home mtn has a lot of ice and it’s medium sized

Oh lol yeah 120 isn’t gonna rly be fun to ski like it’s do able but unless your a complete pow hound skinning up every morning and onto closed runs or abandoned resorts they aren’t gonna rly feel great. It’s still ski able and I mean it’s gonna feel like a 120mm underfoot ski on icy man made hard pack

Your ankles will spontaneously explode as soon as you try to make your first turn on them and you will tomahawk down the mountain screaming "MY ANKLES ARE BROKEN!!", for you have angered the skiing gods.

No but fr, this is my two cents: if you are skiing mostly hardpack/not fresh snow then there is little point to get a ski wider than about 112, ESPECIALLY if it's twin tip (because fatter skis generally tend to be made for a non-center mount). People generally tend to like up to that width or so on hardpack (although I have skied 116 underfoot skis that ripped on hardpack), but if you go any wider you really aren't gaining any hardpack performance. Honestly idek why you would go over 110 on piste with a traditionally shaped ski (some innovative designs make 110+ wide skis work well on hardpack). Also wide skis are EXPENSIVE and you don't want to pay more money for the experience you could have gotten out of a cheaper ski.

Also I considered such a wide ski because I actually do go out West for a few days every year and don't wanna be fucked in pow. Also this ski is a big exception to general properties of many wide skis lol

They are the majesty lumberjack-120 waist 150+ in the nose

they were on a super good deal online $250

my dad (in his 50s) is on the black crow Corvus and talked me into getting a wider ski

so I started looking and did some research. They are supposed to be pretty soft and reviews say they only hurt the people’s knees. And I don’t see hurting ankles because I crank my boots down pretty tight.

do you have anything else to throw in that could be bad with the ski or with the conditions?

lol I thought we were dissing the guys riding 120s without snow, my bad!

but if you have a 120, ski it! skiiing 120 is better than not skiiing, but skiing 120mm on ice and such, leaves something to be desired, but so does a detuned park ski ;)

corvus is a big mountain ski for going fast on huge mountain faces, so... rad dad? or... black crows 50s dentist ski style ski, either way is ok I guess.

Hella rad dad, he got me into skiing. And I got him into the parks. But yeah, a good amount of my season is ice and slush. Funny part is, they will be a detuned 120.

Wide skis are hard on the knees if you’re hitting jumps often.

Ok... I’m kinda a park rider and I do a lot of the big jumps and i also do the side jumps on trails that send you to flat. I could probably find a way to get used to it

Tell dad hes rad, but also say you need some 90-105 skis

Having bad knees sucks bigtime later in life.. a LOT of us here knows....

Trust me, he knows the bad knee vibe. But he thinks that the wider ski is better on his knees.

I don’t know why, but that is also why I got wide skis. I have been getting the bad knees ever since I had a bad crash on a jump.

the vid is at 12:00 in the video ?

I ride park on 109 underfoot skis and I can handle it fine, just throwing that out there if you have a history of knee problems or something

Oh you'll be perfect, are they full rocker? I live in WI and daily 121 Surface Balances, I couldnt be happier with them, they carve and handle super nice. and its cool to just have 1 ski that sets you up for anything. the one drawback is you do lose a bit of agility in the park

If you are spending a lot of full days lapping the park, don't get 120.

agreed, especially if they're full rocker

my main reasoning for this is really just bc no 120 underfoot ski is designed to be center mounted. Also like I said they're expensive so why would you pay like 800 for skis whose edges are gonna be destroyed in a few weeks when you coulda just gotten park skis for less

Definitely true, whenever I intentionally ski park I usually ride my old Salomon rockers, those aren't even centered and are way better for park. Otherwise most days I just bomb around and hit a few park runs on the fatties, but dont overdo it with fat skis in the park

It looks like they at least have some camber so you can put an edge. If they were full rocker you would basically be screwed. I would not use them for park but not a bad ski to mess around the mountain on. I used to rock my 118 waist 4FRNT CRJs up at Snowbird in any condition that was not hardpack ice and had a blast. Camber/Freeride rocker skies are surprisingly nimble for their size if done right.

I can carve very well on my full rocker inthaynes, they just need to be on edge when you're cruising or they'll be very squirmy

96 with fat tip/tails is plenty you wont ski pow deep enough to really need that ever here honestly. I wouldn't recommend 120 waist as a one ski quiver.

I think [tag=144811]@hot.pocket[/tag] nailed it when he said this site at times has whats good for skiiing what, to... a lot of weird choices.
