if you have not seen donny darko than i warn you - read no further. (i seriously mean it... you must go into this movie as a first timer knowing as little as possible - all you must know is that it will make you think - now stop reading!)

now for the rest of you... can anyone actually explain what happens in the movie? i've seen it a few times now and i'm starting to put it togeather... but one thing that is bugging me that I can't understand is: did donnie's girlfriend and the chineese chick have any link to one another? why did donnie tell her that everything will work for her in the end? and what was up with the book she had with his name on it? did she just have a big obsession with him and we were just suposed to assume that he knew and was just comferting her?

donnie darko - we found out he was a savior at the end of the movie. he saved his family and girlfriend from death as well as keeping inoccent teachers (farmer) from getting humiliated... all for just taking his own life. or was he crazy and the whole movie was just in his mind?

what did the sphere's comming out of the people have to do with it? were they the set paths of humans that god has pre-determined and they control the people's actions by moving and acting moments before the people?

i wish the movie had a better ending (like if donnie had of talked to grandma death for instance)... but it's almost better that the movie ended this way - it leaves you scratching your head... and it was a happy ending.

aside from the questioning of the movie - it was an amazing video. the soundtrack was amazing and fit the scene's perfectly making the emotions of the charactors and vibe of the scene clear. the editing (like when donnie walked into the school in slow-mo for the first time) kicked ass, and the acting in it was amazing too. all around good movie that included many good questions, (time travel, religion, life)

what did everyone get out of the movie?

The first things that I thought of after I saw the movie was the langoliers (another good movie) and this episode of ... the X files I think it was. either way the person that died in the show had to live through the day (or some amount of time) leading up to their death. They kept re-living their death. Basically what I thought the movie was about (and I've only watched it once) was that at the time of your death you actually had the oppourtunity to live for a given amount of time. But no matter what you do you can't change the fact that at the end of that time the two different periods of time would collide and you'd return to that second before your death. almost like a 'life flashing before your eyes' event except you see the future.

This just sounds good but it doesn't really explain the whole shit coming out of the body. or it was just a dream.

i think that with charita ( the oriental fat bitch) donnie had told his shrink that he didnt want to be alone ever and when he told charita that everything will work out for her in the end, what he was meaning is that she'll find someone just like donnie found gretchen cuz charita was alone throughout the whole movie

'Now, I'm lubing up the little toy car so, I can put it in my bum' - Ryan Dunn

Donnie felt bad for Charita. Remember in the beginning, at the bus stop, his friends are making fun of her and he says, 'just leave her alone'. I think because of this, Charita develops a crush on him, thats why she wrote his name in her book. There is no connection between her and Gretchen.

As for Donnie, he was the person chosen to return the 'artifact' (the engine) to it's proper time-line. He gets super-powers that manifest themselves in his sleep. He can unlock doors, has superhuman strength, and he could also see the pre-determined paths of other people around him.

The ending is difficult to understand, but I belive it all makes sense. He succesfully returns the engine to it's correct time and saves all the people around him. Even though it was a parallel universe, they all retain some of that memory. In the scene near the end with Mad World playing in the background and everyone waking up, they all kind of remember what happened, but it begins to fade like a dream... Remember Mrs. Farmer knows about Jim Cunningham, and Cuningham is crying because he realizes what a monster he is.

All of these people, along with Drew's Character and Noah's and Gretchen and Frank (both the bunny and the boyfriend) however, helped deliver Donnie to the place he was supposed to be at and helped him return the artifact.

Frank has special powers in order to help Donnie too, because he was killed by Donnie or something like that.

I thought it was the best movie I've ever seen. The actors did it almost for free. Alot of the special effects were done for free on favours and they shot the entire film in just over 20 days.

The DVD has a bunch of deleted scenes and explains alot. You should get it.

how did donnie return the engine back to it's proper timeline? the engine from the plane still hit him. yet that plane wasn't flying untill the day in which the world 'ended'.

yea, i watched it again yesterday and noticed at the end everyone he helped was smiling (like the chinise chick and shit) and everyone he exposed or hurt was crying and shit... so now i completely understand the movie (hard to put it into words, but i understand everything from why frank was there and all that... also read the philosophy on time travel by roberta sparrow since i made this thread so that helped me a little bit). this is the first time it has taken me 5 times to watch a movie to completely understand it. granted i understood it to an extent the first time i saw it, but it took a while to really read into what the movie was actually trying to say. definitly my new fav movie for sure.

good quotes from Donny Darko

Donnie: You are such a fuckass!

Elizabeth: Did you just call me a fuckass? You can go suck a fuck!!

Donnie: Oh really, and how does one suck a fuck?

Donnie: First of all, Papa Smurf didn't create Smurfette. Gargamel did. She was sent in as Gargamel's evil spy with the intention of destroying the Smurf village, but the overwhelming goodness of the Smurf way of life transformed her. And as for the whole gang-bang scenario, it just couldn't happen. Smurfs are asexual. They don't even have reproductive organs under those little white pants. That's what's so illogical, you know, about being a Smurf. What's the point of living if you don't have a dick?

the philosophy of time travel is a real book?

'Now, I'm lubing up the little toy car so, I can put it in my bum' - Ryan Dunn

well, they made the book for the movie and you can look at and read the pages on the website and in the dvd's special features. it talks about how water and metal are some of the basic elements for time travel (thus the scene where donnie has the knife and stabs the water barrier or whatever it is in the bathroom). i think nine_milla_killa hit it right on because he has the dvd. it explains a lot of stuff and has so many deleated scenes. they have one scene where dr. therman tells donnie that the pills are placebos (water). also, if you get your hands on the dvd, watch the whole movie with the director commentary on. it's interesting, and it answers a lot of questions.

I don't know, but i was under the impression that due to his skitzophrenia (sp?), he was out of place, due to his random, non-determined-paths...not the engine

The engine is the artifact that has somehow crossed the time-lines. And the tangeant universe will implose in however many days that Frank tells him if he does not complete whatever it is that he needs to do.

there's nothing complicated about that part - how old are you? the reason why she kissed him is because to him it didn't matter that she had a crazy step-dad who tried to kill his mom and all that love shit... the fact that he still liked her and stood by her showed her that there is love in the world, doesn't matter how horrible your life has been.

do you not know emotion? i thought everyone in the world had at least a little bit of emotion in them.

I'm not sure if anyone answered this question yet (I'm just bringing back the thread because someone asked for it) but Darryl asked what the green 'tunnels' were... They are Donnie's way of seeing the (very near) future. His dad goes to the fridge, but his blob goes there first; it's everyone's predetermined path. However, everyone's path is only predetermined for the near future, and anything beyond the 'tunnel' is still able to be changed, to be altered, and that's what Donnie has to do, is to see past[/b] the near future and realize his task before it becomes too late. He thinks 'cellar door' and realizes what he has to do, where he has to go, but he does it before his 'tunnel' shows him.

Yeah, this movie kicks ass... there's still a ton I don't understand about it, though... I've only seen it twice.

But grandma death was in the middle of the road when frank hit her, there by causing Gretchin's death,

so it was her fault, she died,

also, had donnie had to live with himself (by himself) ei. alone,

his live would have ended as he knew it anyways, because he killed frank, so he would have gone to jail, and everyone would have been fucked over, the teacher, his family, gretchen

for donny either way it was the day the world would end

either way-

yea it falls through its path onto his room and he dies. yea for sure the pills werent hallucinigenic... still so much to figure out.... i dont understand the asian girls part in the movie... i realized he helped her out.. but is that all just accenting the fact that hes some sort of a superhero? he sacraficed himself for the greater good of at least 5 people...

and i think that when he first meets gretchen and she says 'what kind of a name is donnie darko anyways, sounds like a superhero' and donnie says 'how do you know im not' is pretty significant

yah yah, on the dvd in the extras they actually made a scene that shows donnie impaled on a piece of wood or something in his bedroom. pretty gruesome so they took it out. they figured the audience would just know that donnie got squished.

also, in the directior commentary they basically stated that one of the underlying themes they wanted to touch on was how awful kids are to each other and how adults can be so unaware of their kids' actions. (i.e. snorting in the hall as the principal walks right by, making fun of charita, etc.)

buy the dvd. it makes a world of difference.

did the sky/filing cabnits shot have anything to do with the flooded school? did charita love donnie (ie. her book at the end of the movie that says his name on it) if she liked him why did she run away when he approached her? whats up with the fat guy in the track suit!!!

theres so many questions, but if you check out the deleted scenes with commentary, the director says that he left many parts of the movie open to interpretation so that the audience can do exactly what we are doing now... fantastic directing...

Charita runs away because she's so horrified/embarassed that Donnie might find out about how she feels, like when he comes up behind her when she's at her locker, she just gets surprised by him, and doesn't know how to act... but she definitely loves Donnie... yes.

i dont know if anyone else mentioned this, but i didnt read through the whole post. when they were in class discussing the book, donnie was explaining how when one bad thing happens a good thing happens at the same time to even it out. thats shown in the movie, like for instance...the scene flips back and forth from him lighting the house on fire and his sister in the talent show.

i watched it high last night, so im not sure if i got all the main points. im gonna watch it again today and maybe post again. frank's voice is scary as fuck when you're high, home alone, and have the surround sound up really high. just a tip.

I didn't get the part when donnies letter to grandma death is voiced in the background. Did he send the letter? Because it says something like 'sometimes i'm afraid of things you might tell me' and for Jim Cunnigham, did he have a real reason to be in the movie,or just to be made to look like a fool, then a monster. I just don't get it why Frank tells him to burn down the house if it doesn't help Donnie's mission.

And was Drew Barrymore's only reason to be in the movie(the main thing) to be fired and write 'cellar door' on chalkboard?

Rent the DVD and listen to the Audio Commentary. It explains almost everything. Even though the director says some things are unexplainable with sci fi/time travel stories.

'I wouldn't have showered this morning if I hadn't thrown up in my sleep.'

the reason that jim cunnigham was exposed as a monster was to show that what donnie was doing was heroic, almost everything he did was to help everyone around him at the cost of what it might do to him.

Also i was watching it, and when donnie first meets gretchen, he says he is writing and drawing, and that in the future he wants to write a book and draw the pictures in it, and thats exactly what grandma death did, she wrote the philosophy of time travel and drew all those pictures, so maybe grandma death had the same mission that donnie had when she was younger while she was still a teacher, then all the things that happened to donnie happened to her, she wrote the book on it, and her fate, instead of death which was donnies fate, was to become a paranoid schizophrenic, a total recluse...

sorry that was a rant

I'm just glad that Mike Hunt payed a visit to ratemypoo.com

I think someone mentioned it before but its worth mentioning again, for those of you without the DVD: www.donniedarko.com is somewhat helpful in understanding things.

if the house was burned down or not and if miss cunningham was on the plane the plane still would have been there to send the engine through the time portal but he did it to counteract the good thing that was happening that night, in every day there should be an equal number of good things to bad thing and they usually happen near each other in the day, so every bad thing is counteracted by a good thing and vice versa

The Official 'Sweet Ass Bitch' of The NDSC

that's the great thing about this movie. there are so many different ways of looking at it, none of which are completely wrong (well you know what I mean)

here's the 'philosophy of time travel' book by Sparrow.

In it you'll see that donnie who was the living reciever (and whos duty it was to set the world straight) had super powers, only by bringing the plane engine (artifact) into the same place as it first jumped back in time will the tangent universe re-link with the original universe. Every event is of signifigance to him bringing the engine back to that place. if one of them didn't happen then donnie wouldn't be in the same position as he was in the end of the movie, the engine wouldn't have crashed through his roof the second time and the tangent timeline that he lived in for 28 days would have been destroyed.

'If a person dies within the Tangent Dimension, they are able to contact the Living Receiver through the Fourth Dimensional Construct.

The Fourth Dimensional Construct is made of Water.

The Manipulated Dead will often set an Ensurance Trap for the Living Receiver to ensure that the Artifact is returned safely to the Primary Universe.

If the Ensurance Trap is succesful, the Living Receiver is left with no choice but to use his Fourth Dimensional Power to send the Artifact back in time into the Primary Universe before the Black Hole collapses upon itself.'

The part that's really open to interpretation is the end, right before donnie dies. Had he already brought back the engine and was he back in his bed from the beginning of the movie? or was he sitting there in the tangent world knowing he was about to save the world from distruction?

After you read the 'book' it explains most of it. but you have to see it again after it's completely explained, you'll notice things if you remember that donnie has the power to control water and etc.

-Mike

I just wanna see siamese twins box eachother.

yeah I think you're right ben, it would really explain why she is the way she is, if she was in the same position donnie was and it scarred her for life. the book says 'Those who do remember the Journey are often overcome with profound remorse for the regretful actions buried within their Dreams, the only physical evidence buried within the Artifact itself; all that remains from the lost world. '
