EVERY pro should wear a helmet AT ALL TIMES IN PUBLIC

IDK if it's been said before but it needs to be said again.
Too many people have died this year as a direct result of not wearing a helmet. My cousin's best friend died the other day, she was a good friend of mine too (RIP Faye x). She was only 18 and it could have completely been avoided if she had been wearing a helmet.
Pro skiers have a responsibility to wear head protection because so many young people aspire to be like them. Professional skiers need to set a good example, otherwise people start saying "Candide doesn't need a helmet and look how big he goes! Why on earth would I need one?" The point is that it isn't difficult to wear a helmet, they are light and hardly restricting, barely noticeable, and look just as legit as any hat or beanie.
You get 1 chance with your head. Just 1. There are no replacements, warranties or refunds. So look after it.

I'm probably going to get my Karma stripped away now but I feel someone needs to say it.

without mine i would have several concussions, possibly even died, i hit my head so hard a few times

agreed.

I always wear my helmet and I do think everyone should, but I also think that everyone is responsible for their own head and if one doesn't want to wear a helmet, it's his problem. There is plenty of advertising saying that helmets can save your life...

This does not affect the fact that I am really sorry for your friend

i decided to snowboard for a day and i dont think i have ever hit my head so hard, but lucky wearing a helmet probs woulda knocked myself out a couple of times

I agree with you, if someone doesn't want to then fine, that is their choice, but everyone is influenced by what the pro skiers do.
HOWEVER, advertising only does so much. Pro Skiers are in the lime light so much, it wouldn't take much for them to say "look kids, I wear a helmet, so should you." These people are respected a lot more than a poster.
It's all about setting a positive example. Think about the reasoning behind skiers having a pro model,
"if it's good enough for Simon, it's good enough for me" "If I get these skis then I am at least a little bit closer to skiing like Tod Wallnutz"
I think the same applies to helmets, "to do the stuff that pros do I am definitely going to need a helmet or I could seriously hurt myself".
And thanks, it sucks to lose someone at such a young age.

although there are sometimes when helmets dont even do anything, look at all the test. some dont even protect over 30mph. some bern helmets arent even certified, but i still use one

what ever happend to parenting? My PARENTS make me wear a helmet, they saud theyd throw down for whatever helmet i wanted as long as i always wear it, i sat there and said, "im never gonna need this" until i over shot a jump and dud heel released landing in the tranny and cracked the thing in half, and knocked myself out. now i always wear it.

Pros should wear a helmet cause its a good thing to do, not just for the impressionable youth. It lies in the responsibility of the parents of the youth to force it upn the kids, thats what parenting is....and if your over 18 ur an adult be responsible

Here in Quebec we have to wear a helmet as soon as we enter the terrain park, otherwhise, you get kicked out. It's a pretty good thing because everybody wears it then. Nobody can look "cooler" than anybody by wearing a beanie in the park. The other resorts should do the same and for them, the insurance cost is lower so they get benefits from those laws.

headphones and hat do look pretty sweet. but after spending my whole season in tremblant wearing one i feel weird when i dont now

imo helmets look cooler than beanies anywayif you rock em rite..not to mention they can save ur life at the same time!

I must say that I agreee 100% on this... everyone should be wearing a helmet all the time when they are skiing. I am a ski patroller/park crew/risk manager at my hill and I have a lot of first hand experience with head injuries. The people who walk in with abrasions on their face, bloody nose, etc. are the people who are wearing helmets. The people who I have to put a neck brace, backboard, oxygen, and send away in an ambulance are the ones without a helmet. Granted helmets don't always save you from getting knocked out or getting a concussion or hurting your neck, but if those people didn't have one on it could have been much worse.

One of the few times I was riding without a helmet this year I was riding switch and looked uphill for half a second and then BAM flew backwards and smoked my head on the hardpack. I thought I had just killed someone... I hit some snowboarder kid who had just fallen over in a shadow in front of me and some how the base of his board was uphill and I hit that. I was lucky I wasn't dead because I hit my head soo hard. Luckily I rode away from it.

Accidents can happen anywhere on the hill no matter how good you are. A few years ago, my brother was putting his skis on after he fell off a rail and he got blindsided by a snowmobile... ended up at the hospital over night with a fractured skull... he wasn't wearing a helmet and is lucky to be alive. We've had some big loses in the ski industry this year and I would hate to see anymore.

So please wear your helmets! /end rant

SO TRUE! but i think the younger generation wears helmetsanyway, thx to HH and others!

i agree 100 % on this.. you should always wear a helmet, cause it's not always you'r own fault if your head gets hurt.. a friend of mine crashed on a kicker, he was fine untill he went to pick up his skis and a snowboarder landed straight on his head and his helmet completely cracked but it saved his life.

I also think that if pros would wear helmets whenever they ski that it would help affect kids to wear them too, but not only pros also the older kids/adults skiing the park, cause the kids look up to them too. ofcause it's the parents responsibility too, but the parents probably aren't with the kids when they ski the park with their friends, so they can easily just take their helmets off. I always said that i think i tshould be a law to wear a helmet at any mountain, just like wearing a seatbelt when you drive.

I don't think all parents are aware of the risks we subject ourselves to. My mum never wore a helmet until I told her to, now she does!
Pro's should wear a helmet because they influence people AND because it's the right thing to do, and parents will see a pro and say look he wears a helmet, and so should you little Jim! It's all about aspirations and who you look up to.
Even after serious injury, Candide hardly ever wears a helmet, whilst I respect him so much as a skier, he needs to set a better example.

on one point i have to say that a pro should def wear protection whenever he is "working". that means film shoots, photo shoots or contests (although helmets are mandatory the most times).

so that you never see a video or a photo of a pro without a helmet. i guess that would do it pretty much.

BUT if theyre just somewhere around, trainin or do something else which is not meant to be public, i dont think we should force them to be a good example all the time.

what i propose is something that gives a lot of people the possibility to get their hands on cheap helmets/helmet tests. there is program for school kids here where they get helmets 50 % off (gov. pays the rest, not the dealers, fabricants). maybe something like this because everyone that wore a helmet once says its "not as bad", "i will never take it off again", bla bla.

tbh, i think a beanie looks better than a helmet, but that does in no way compensate the other disadvantages of not wearing a helmet.

pros are normal people too and if they dont wear helmets thats there deal, they go ski to have fun not to keep kids safe by wearing helmets around in public

I don't even care if helmets will do crap for me when I hit a tree at 40 MPH. I rather have something in between my head other than a cotton and nylon piece of clothing. Helmets keep my head warm anyways, and I think they're comfortable.

my parents always told me to wear a helmet biking but i didnt. i never fell during that so thats good.

I never wore a helmet skiing till I knocked myself pretty good, and now i do all the time. I feel so much safer. However even if kids parents tell them to, they arnt necessarily going to unless they learn themselves, because helmets are "uncool". So if pros make helmets cool, then WHAM! you just knocked down that whole uncool helmet deal.

why should we not wear helmets? this could be one of the most dangerous sports in the world

Photos where helmets are worn less likely to get published. Like it or not, that is why a lot of pros don't wear helmets and it's not going to change any time soon. The only time you'll see a lot of big names wearing helmets are in comps where it might be mandatory and no-one is going to get good shots of them anyway.

i disagree. anyone who is disillusioned by pros not wearing helmets is a fool. obviously there are alot of dangers in skiing, and everyone on the slopes should know that already. wether or not a person wears a helmet really should not depend upon their favorite pro. when i look at my helmet in the morning before skiing and decide if i want to wear it, i have never asked myself if i saw pros wearing helmets in a recent edit or something. people need to be smart enough to make their own choice

ever since i hit my head underrotating a 5 in the peak of this season and got a concussion i always wear my helmet when throwing down, its worth it

Definately

I didnt start using a helmet till my friend cracked his skull in 3 places with his helmet on in february without he wouldnt be here today.

My point is what you base that choice on though. Whether you like it or not, you bought those skull candys in your profile pic because you thought skull candys are dope, and you probably saw a pro wearing them or something. I could be wrong but that is why skull candy sponsor skiers. I'm not saying I am any exception either.
You make your choice based on what you believe to be most important to you. If that is looking 'cool', you might choose not to wear a helmet because some pros who are 'hard core' don't bother.
I'm sure you have heard the phrase, 'lead by example'.
YES it is your decision of course, but pro skiers need to be more responsible and appreciate the fact that they are respected aspirational people.

So you are saying you wouldn't wear one why? Because it looks cooler not to? Why do you think that is?
Dude you might not think you are basing your decision on what a pro does, but ultimately they represent our sport and lead the trends into the mass market. (no hate btw)

I didn't buy those Skullcandys in my picture. I was given them from a friend who got a gigantic box of Skullcandy from Jimbo.

I don't understand why you feel that the masses just have the ability to make personal decisions for other people? yes, wearing a helmet is a personal decision.

Why do pros have to be role models? Why do you think all pros should wear helmets when you have already stated that people know that a helmet can prevent injury?

... and i'm saying 9/10 chance says duncans skull candys were flowed.

yeah my parents made me wear a helmet and then they bought me a sick one. A lot of pros wear them ie: nmariniti matt walker henrik chug sometimes.. and i cant think of any right now but def more should there being made to wear them in comps i think that they should just wear them all the time..

The good thing is that skiers wear the helmet a lot more than snowboarders, from what I have noticed.

I agree that pros give a big exemple and that them wearing a helmet make people wearing one too, but I don't think they should be regulated on that. Plus who could ever force pros to wear it besides a helmet sponsor or when they are competing at the Xgames?

The ski world has to stop being so obsessed with pros. People do what they want, whether it be wear a helmet or not. And I say, for most little kids.. their parents make them wear a helmet.

in thats all t-rice was helmetless through the majority of the movie. even when he was out in AK. that is sending a dangerous message. skiers do a much better job of rocking the helmets i've noticed.

I have worn almost everyday that I have skiied in my life.

This season I was going to teach one of my friends how to snowboard on the bunny slope so I thought "I'm not gonna need a helmet on the bunny slopes" I ended up still wearing one. First run we get on the lift and somehow my friends board gets caught while we are getting on and the bar comes flying down and smashes me on the back of the head cause I was leaning a little forward. If I hadn't had my helmet on there is no doubt in my mind that I would have been layed out cold.

spark notes: accidents can happen at anytime, they are called accidents for a reason. always wear a helmet.

Helmets are awesome. Chics dig them!!!
