This is something that has always irked me.

What do you guys think? Both of this video and the topic.

I wish if people went to all of the trouble to find the best looking features in the world, they'd at least give them the highest level of riding. Imagine that equivalent location on skis. It's like just sliding it with no spins on or off, no switch ups, and no style but it being percieved as cool just because it's in a cool place.

IMHO, the level of riding is always more important than the backdrop. When the backdrop is needed to validate the riding, it is bullshit.

 
Are you kidding?! those guys are such good athletes. Do you understand how hard wake skating would be? They kill it
 
I've actually watched a lot of wakeskating, read the mags, and pay attention to the comp scene. I tried to get a wakeskate project funded last spring so that's why I was paying attention. I haven't actually wakeskated in years and it was only a buddies board a couple times. I used to wakeboard almost every day in the summer when I was 14-17.

I know what the best guys are doing. Even with winch vs. cable and the gnarliness of being up there on rice paddy. The best guys have kickflip, shove it, and 270 onto that setup. I didn't see any of that in the video. The guys would also have big spin variations on the gap.

It might sound like I'm complaining for the sake of complaining but I'm not. This would be a much easier conversation if this video was skiing. IE: Kaya Backflip video making a big deal out of nothing.
 
how can you even compare this to skiing? or kaya turski's backflip?

hater, the concept is doing something, somewhere never thought possible. and then making it look visually appealing.
 
I think your missing the point of this particular video, to me it is focused on the scenery and doing something they love in an interesting and new place. This particular video isn't about the sickest tricks and the sport, its about the location.
 
I like to believe sometimes its more about the story and the journey than the riding itself.

Maybe this is something I'm learning as I turn into an old man touring snob, but I often appreciate the scenery and the adventure even if the riding isn't next level. I do however get pretty butthurt when a movie builds up for 40 mins for 1 mediocre line or jump session.

But seriously we can all relate to adventure, not all of us can relate to a triples over 140ft tables. Just my .02.
 
I just think its a sweet video, and saying they should've done more impressive tricks in it, to me at least, is the same as saying jp auclair should've done more impressive tricks in all.i.can. Sure, better tricks could be done, but the videos are pretty awesome regardless, thats what I was taking away from it at least.
 
I sort of agree. For instance JP's seg in All I Can was cool, but the level of riding in it made it kind of... meh. When that video went viral with the general public, and a bunch of friends and co-workers were super amazed that skiers can do tricks in the streets I couldn't help but think that it would've been awesome if the video featured a Stept rider instead.
 
Wow. I get what you mean. I'm starting to come around to the there could have been better tricks but that doesn't mean it takes away from the video mindset. It took mentioning all.I.can to really give me perspective.

When things like JP's all.i.can segment that went viral and this video that now has more than 700k views and it had like 30k when I posted it a few days ago, it makes me think that most of the audience sees it and thinks THIS IS _____ while they were previously unaware that skiing on metal or wakeskating even existed. While it's true that JP does give us a grasp on urban skiing and Grubb does give us a grasp of wakeskating, I can't stop thinking well this is does give the intro but there are other guys out there as well that deserve credit that are on a whole new level.

Damnit, I'm going to have to rethink this. What if it was clayton in All.I.CAN? What would that mean? I was so focused on what if it was Andrew Pastura in this video I lost sight of some things. I'm not willing to say anything bad about JP but I was quick to badmouth grubb...
