Electoral College

i think it might be a little too confusing for Bush. i find it pointless, whoever flat out, unarguably gets the most votes, should win.

It was good back in the day, but with our technology we should be able to come up with a better system.

i use this anology, if you were on a sports team, would you want your classmates to be able to select the starting lineup? or a select few knowledgable coaches to do it

dont worry about what i can or cant do, worry about what you cant do to me

the problem is no one really knows or understands exactly who/what the electoral college is, and because it is so confusing for americans, many people really dislike it. i think the average american is really uninformed when it comes to what the electoral college is.

The problem with the electoral college is that its effectiveness is disabled when they have a 'tradition' that the elector always votes the way the state votes. That doesn't make any sense if the entire system is supposedly based on the judgement of the elector.

ooo now that jd has so kindly enlightened me, i might actually have to think of something intelligent to say. yikes. um yes i think there should be an electoral college because we need that mediator between the congress and the popular vote. however, it seems to me we have a rather obscure way of choosing electors that doesn't give a lot of americans much say in who will be voting as part of the electoral body because the electors are chosen at state party conventions and stuff. so yes for the electoral college, but bring it closer to the people. it needs to be more of a representation of the popular vote i guess is what i'm saying.

Here's a little known tidbit: The electoral college originated because the founding fathers didn't trust the American public to choose their leader (they were, to say the least, not big fans of direct democracy). This was a problem in the 1700's because people were vastly uninformed and had no way to get information, aside from a few papers with low distribution (and let's not forget the low literacy rate of the American public back then)

The problem is that it isn't relevant anymore. With widespread mass media and a much higher literacy rate, Americans can be well-informed if they want to be, and if they pick the wrong candidate for the job it's because of poor judgement, not lack of information.

The method I favor is the instant runoff system, which is used in many primaries as well as (correct me if I'm wrong) some Canadian elections. It allows you to vote your conscience the first time around and vote for the lesser of two evils the second time around.

Inflammatory statement time: considering the number of people who voted for Bush in 2000 (almost 50% of the country and that's a FACT, not even taking Florida into consideration), perhaps the American public SHOULDN'T be trusted to elect a president. I favor a system wherein I and the members of my immediate family decide who the president will be.

I feel that whoever more people vote for should win. Doesnt that make sense? Like when voting for mayor, the slums dont get 2 points, and the rich neighborhood doesnt get 3. it's all the same. Bush lost the popular vote, but because he pulled some strings, he got florida's points. lame

davidh, you're wrong. You can't tell that Bush lost the popular vote. It's really hard to explain, but you can never tell who wins the popular vote because of the electoral college. He could have won by a landslide in Texas, where his votes would out number those he didn't get in Florida, or Gore coldn't have won in some other state by a lanslide and outnumber the votes he didn't get in Florida. It's really confusing, but the electoral college is designed to get the right man for the job, and Gore isn't that man. If you say it's outdated, you may not have noticed that most of our country dosen't give a hit about politics. They care more about ce;ebrities and all that crap. So, in a way, the electoral college makes up for those dimwitted fools.

i understand it's purpose and don't mind it, but it still bothers me to know that my vote really doesn't count.

it makes your vote count more, depending on where you live. If the race is close it makes your vote stronger, if the race is the opposite of what you want then its worthless.
