East vs. Midwest Banter thread

people don't understand that size doesn't matter, its how you use it, and in that case midwest does it better. Most resorts out east don't have a full top to bottom part, the big resorts do but most places in midwest got top to bottom with a tow rope. tow rope fast asf

with all due respect to the midwest, fucking LOL

My local in PA got a rope tow and a top to bottom lift park so we are super lucky. Putting in new rope tows is banned in Pa due to them being deemed as amusement park rides

If we talking just park, I'd say midwest has it better. Just cant beat the tow rope for hot laps. If youre less park focused obviously east coast would be better (tho us midwesterners do get to claim Mt. Bohemia). The older I get and more I think about moving, the more I realize there is nothing else like Midwest (more specifically MN) park skiing. A league of its own tbh, tho I am jealous of the east coasts longer seasons

The pass prices out there look sweet as well compared to east

depends on which part of the east.

I'd say East Coast wins, more vertical and probably more good parks.

If you want to lap a rope or ski street then midwest wins. Midwest also probably gets less rain on average.

Fuck the midwest, East Coast is better we invented style AND rail skiing, invented twin tips, and mac forehand is better than any midwest "pro" ever. Anything good in this sport has come from the east coast. Line traveling circus? All us baby. Stept and CL? Us too. HG skis? You already know. Tall T Dan? Duh. Tall T productions? No but we got the poster boys Keegan Kilbride and Phil Casabon. This argument is really MIDwest vs bEAST coast and it's not an argument it's simply that we are better and yall suck. Ryan Stevenson got more swag in his pinky finger than any trollhaugen rider I've ever seen.

what is your question? "what is better?" there's literally no debate, it's the east coast. you can get the same park experience and then actually learn how to ski on top of that.

definitely cannot get the same park experience, you plebs dont get to claim rope tow hot laps. Fuck lapping a park off a chair idc if its a high speed

so tow ropes are a midwest only thing according to you?

lol nah I know theyre not but I am pretty sure they originated in the midwest? I know mission ridge and skibowl and other places out west have them, are there any east coast resorts that do? Also doesnt Grouse have a surface t bar in the park or something which is better than a lift but not as good as a rope

First rope tow in the US was built in Vermont in 1934. I wasn't joking, everything good in skiing comes from the east coast as well as a shit ton of good skiers and filmers.

That hurts as I ride troll but you are right... Sadly

I live on the West coast, so I probably don't have much say in this thread, however from videos I've watched I'd want to ski in the Midwest for these reasons:

- Fast rope tows (I'm privileged to be riding a rope tow in Oregon).

- Cheaper passes.

- Smaller lines.

- Nicer people.

- Whole lotta rails in one area.

it nice to be able to hit jumps and rails in the same lap, never skied a rope tow but I don't think I would like it as much as a dedicated chair that doesn't have a line 95% of the time.

i can't think of any right now but i'm not as "finger on the pulse" as i used to be. waterville, back when it was a park mecca, had a t bar for their (dope) park which was same idea. they moved it though

There's a couple, the best one is a T bar though (Okemo) cuz it services a halfpipe, jump line, and a couple rail lines

T bars are a nice option for a park and better than a chair, but i still dont think it compares to a rope tow. The ability to get on/off wherever and the speed makes it so efficient. If I have a trick in mind on one feature, I can get 20 hits in ten minutes or more

7 springs for a few more years hopefully, wisp has a cable tow with handles, app ski in nc has a cable tow. Kissing bridge in western New York has one never been but I’ve seen clips

Almost all east coast ski hills started with rope tows and surface lifts back in the day but from the times changing and the east coast resorts being on actual mountains and hills and not just tall landfills where a rope makes sense for regular skiing uphill loading where in the east it just doesn’t make sense back in the day. That’s why the east has no ropes anymore they all have been removed

Good history lesson

as an East coaster, I voted Midwest lol

but I'm a pure park rat dreaming about those rope tow parks...

Someone wrote that East's season is longer. I'd disagree with that. Northern VT/Maine, but here in southern NH the season is barely 3 months even in a good winter. Mid Dec - mid March

East coast has some decent backcountry skiing, and I think it has to win just for the vertical. Some parks are good, some parks are just ok, some hills don't have a park at all.

Yeah I'd like to experience it. Just feels like if I'm doing a trip its more worth it to go west. but im honestly very intrigued by the east coast all mountain skiing. I want to ski Jay on a pow day or drop cliffs at MRG or all the other cool stuff im unaware of. might have to make a trip happen someday

The Midwest definitely has a charm to it. Growing up skiing Wild and Troll, I had a lot of good times. I do miss the tow rope accessibility of lapping rails now that I moved out west. To me, the biggest annoyance with the Midwest is just shit ass weather.

I'd say we prolly have more consistent winters than most of the east, a lot less rain at least

Fr this winter. Troll just opened the new expansion and now they closed. Although I do like being able to lap the shit out of features so I can learn new tricks.

Rough winter for a lot of places for sure. There's always another season

Never been to either but I'm grateful for both and all the skiers/content/culture that has come from both and id love to ski in Minnesota, Michigan, and New England someday

Heard a story about a Michigan McDonald's having to make sauce packets available only if you were 18 and up because of fights from people getting dinner after riding. Just for that Michigan gets my vote.
