East Coaster heading to Keystone area

Whatsup newschoolers.

I'm planning on heading from Vermont to Keystone after the holidays this season. I'm just looking for a little info on the area. How readily available is there housing in the area? Is it an expensive area to live in? I'm considering doing a little couch surfing until I find an apartment/room.

Kind of a cliche thread, but any info at all on Keystone or the area would much appreciated.
 
Are you driving out? If not wanna carpool? I'm leaving right around new years heading to beaver creek. I'll probably end up looking for housing north of there to save some $. In between seems pretty hopeless unless I run over a bag of cash on the way

My plans aren't quite locked in enough to really be able to commit to anything just yet. I'll definitely keep this in mind though.

hahahah the heady topper demand knows no bounds. I live in the same town that it's brewed in, and it's still hard to get! At most places it hits the shelves on Wednesdays and sells out that day! I should bring a case of it out...bartering gold
 
do you have more than 3 grand or so saved up.. I blew threw about 2 grand before i found a place to crash, housing is really difficult to find a and b when you find it is dumb expensive. Also gas, driving in the winter up and down hills you will blow thru gas. Generally life is more expensive here. I wish more people were honest about the realities of moving to a ski town as a bum.

How long did that take you? Should have just stayed in your car or couch surfed it. 2 grand?

I don't even plan to spend that much on housing for the season.

I definitely have a solid safety net saved up, but I certainly don't want to blow through it. What did you do in the meantime while looking for a place that caused you to spend 2 grand? Definitely appreciate the honest insight. Vermont is pretty similar in terms of cost of living; housing is both rare and expensive here, and you have to drive over the hill and through the woods just to find a grocery store - so I'm prepared to deal with that.

At this point i'm kind of up in the air. After new years, I'll have basically 'no strings attached' and could go just about anywhere. I've had my eye on the Keystone area because of it's proximity to other mountains and it just seems like a great place to ski...I was initially looking into Telluride, but its seems pretty secluded from the rest of the state (and from what I saw) was stupid expensive.

Would you (or anyone from CO) have any recommendations on good areas to check out as a backup plan? Keeping in mind affordability, work/jobs, recreation and most importantly skiing? Any other East Coasters care to share stories of their pilgrimage?

Look around on CL. Beaver creek and vail are stupid price because of the world cup. Checked out leadville and there's 4br places for 900 a month. Like a 45 min drive to those mountains, 10 to copper I think but not THAT bad. Probably going to be bunking up with someone about 10 min from BC for under 4 so gonna do that I think.

Keystone is on the denver end. I bed you can find some cheap stuff if you look around. Check CL. Maybe even post an "I'm not a serial killer, I'm looking for a place to stay and I'm willing to be the little spoon" ad on there.

I know a bunch of people in denver area that don't even ski. Was going to rock out my car or some couches till things got flowing rather than lock in for WAYYYYYY too much on a lease somewhere.

Really not the time of year to find deals on housing in mountain towns but I'm in the same boat. Check around and you should be able to do pretty decent. IF you're chill and able to kick it with 2-4 other people you have an even better shot. Honestly probably some couches or floors you could start with. I saw a heated shred for 200 near vail I think. Was listed as "storage or maybe you could sleep in there if yur desperate"

Idk. Just not into blowing 2000 unless my nose hurts and I helped support the living wage of 5+ scantily clad women.
 
Definitely difficult to find housing in Summit county this time of year, but not impossible. Lots of the Denver locals suck up all the housing rentals for 3-4 months. I agree with checking Frisco/Silverthorne/Dillon for sure. Breck is good for couch crashing when you first get here because most people living in town know the struggle. Hopefully you already have a season pass locked down too otherwise it's really only backcountry that's avail if you're looking to go cheap.

Slowly but surely i'm figuring everything out. I now have a few spots bookmarked! A few phone calls and a long drive and I should be in business! If I were to start over and do it again, I'd probably have started planning before December (hindsight is 20/20) but regardless I'm gonna make it happen. Thanks again everyone!
