Earth Hour a Total Bust in California

read this. I know its a blog, but it shows accurate graphs of power usage in California.

http://wattsupwiththat.com/2009/03/29/earth-hour-in-california-success-or-bust-the-caiso-power-graph-tells-the-story/

notice, no decrease in usage or demand. If there is no decrease in one of the most liberal states, then the results around the rest of the country will likely not be much different.

those who are lazy

earth hour just seems like such a stupid concept to me, if you turned off your lights for an hour, all you did is prove that you're a liberal douche who doesn't care about the environment but cares about looking good for the neighbors and impressing others by proving they are "green". its just another "who has the biggest dick" contest. the one who is quiet and doesn't observe all this bullshit always ends up winning

dont you waste more power by turning on the lights again than you saved by having them off? or is it long enough that it balances out?

uhhhh, im really tempted to get involved in this thread. but i dont think im ready yet. alls i can say is that i agree with the thread creator

agreed! i objected to being a part of earth hour. probably goes along with why i dont go out of my way to recycle, either.

indeed, i cant remember what city but for some reason i think it is chicago there is a fire house that has a light out front that was installed like when the first incandescent light bulb was released and it still hasnt burned out because they turned it on and left it going. every time you turn a light on it creates a surge that draws more power to get the molecules moving.

i wasnt saying it was, i was just asking.

and i was out on the town during earth hour, and i didnt see one house with lights off. i kinda forgot about it, but if i knew id probably break out a gameboy or something. just cause.

+1

i love how everything needs to be turned into a fashion show...so predictably moronic of people....

Earth Hour was a simple concept to try and get grassroots activism 'en mass' to work together by getting people to vote with their lights/power consumption (and hype the fact so if it worked out, people would notice). Unfortunately this is too much for our consume-consume-consume society to even give consideration too.

There are ~8766 hours in a year and 99% of people can't turn off their electronics for 1 hour to support a simple idea.

Think about that people...think about how much you consume every hour you exist in your luxury live...are you really doing something that warrants that high level of consumption?

oh shut up. an hour in my house aint going to do shit considering, as said above, im gone most of the day so the lights are off. im sleeping most of the night, so they are off. stop trying to hate on people because they didnt turn off their lights because the tv told them to. sorry i didnt get the message, i was conserving electricity through common everyday habits.

You must comprehend things at a 2nd grade level if you can't understand the concept behind the timing of the event...go back and read things over again and think about it.

Here are a couple hints to help you out:

- the event was a statement to bring attention to our massive power consumption habits

- it occurred during peak hours

the way I look at it, earth hour was put in place to promote energy saving consciousness rather than watch energy use fall during that hour. still, why not participate? I wasn't dick waving about it, and in fact this is the first I've even mentioned it to anyone. I chilled with my girl, turned off the lights, and lit a few candles. and it reminded me to conserve in my everyday energy usage, which I try to do.

but here's the catch... we already know we consume too much power because this isn't the first earth hour friend. oh and its not like we've been researching alternative power sources for the past + two decades. all it was was a good idea turned into something the news can report on, and more self-indulging gas for x-core liberals to run off of. why do you think it was iconic buildings that turned off their lights and not the massive business buildings all around? hmm oh because the priorities were 1. media exposure, coming in a far distant second- raising awareness, and lastly and very least important, conserving power.

then again my mindset is, i guarantee you, saving more power than your mindset is. i was raised to constantly save power at whatever chance. where it seems yours is only set on saving power to only special times of the year. congrats buddy, now everyone knows how green you are!

Really?
To anyone who knew about earth hour and did not participate:You are the scum that proves that Americans are in fact ignorant.

I think you're missing the point still. It's more or less of a protest to make people aware of how dependent they are on excess power usage. If you, or other people conserve power in their house that's fantastic. This is to raise awareness for those who don't...

...so because I support the same notions that Earth Hour supports I must be a huge sellout and a uber-power-consUmer...awesome path of reasoning.

Why the hate on people who want to help raise awareness about something that we both agree is something that needs to be addressed in our society (i assume you agree since you are a self proclaimed uber power saver)?

no hate on those people. good job. just the hate for the ones who jump to call people moronic (thats the word you used) or ignorant (some other kid used) for not participating or supporting the earth hour media fiasco. good hold to your ideals, but dont get all high and mighty because they have a different point of view. i mean come on, the cancer of our planet? get over yourself. dont get caught up in some media circus.

Ryno, you know if you want to ban people for combining prickish behaviour with a complete lack of basic reasoning skills, I'm totally behind you on that one...

I just can't understand the fervent desire to defeat this concept. Who does it harm if a bunch of people mobilize to turn their lights off for an hour? The point is to raise awareness of excessive power consumption... so if it fails, so what? How is anyone worse off? If you're the kind of person who crusades to counteract stuff like this just because you see environmentalists as the enemy... and yeah, there were Malkinites saying they were going to turn absolutely every power-consuming apparatus that they could ON for that hour to cancel out the effect, which misses the point anyway since saving energy wasn't the desired effect in the first place... you're a spiteful cunt and a pretty terrible excuse for a human being generally.

dont get too touchy JD. banning someone for having a different ideal is kinda wack. cant believe you'd support that. again not hating on people supporting earth hour, im hating on those who call people, "...a spiteful cunt and a pretty terrible excuse for a human being generally" for not supporting it. honestly grow up and realize that the world isn't always going to work in the way you envision.

Yeah see I wasn't talking about banning people because they disagree with Ryno, more banning them for being idiots, in that they can't form a coherent sensible point. There are some responses in this thread that suggest that the posters are actually within the realm of mental disability, and they're simultaneously acting like dicks to people they disagree with.

I was actually just kidding though. If I was seriously proposing banning people for saying stupid things I definitely wouldn't propose it in NSG.

See, this is what I'm talking about. If you're implying that that was what I was doing, that's a really stupid thing for you to say. See, I said that not about people who didn't support Earth hour, ie people who were like "What? fuck that I'm not turning off my lights, why should I?". That's cool if it's not an issue you're particularly behind, apathy about these problems is a whole other discussion. What I was saying there, is that you're a poor excuse for a human being if, because of some deep-seated loathing of all things left-wing and by extension environmentalists, you set out to defeat Earth Hour as a concept despite the fact that it could in no way harm you if you just ignored everyone who was doing it. If you're that spiteful, you suck at life. That's what I said.

Now, to take that and suggest that I'm calling everyone who "doesn't support" Earth Hour a cunt, is really stupid. Because that's not what I said, and anyone with half a brain and the ability to read the English language could figure that out.

i think everyone should stop arguing cuz J.D. deffinitely knows what hes talking about and is an actually coherent, smart person. I'm not being sarcastic either, + karma dude

JD when HAVENT you been for banning people? haha

but seriously, it did no harm. none. if you dont want to do it THEN FUCKING DONT. but big fucking deal its not like turning off your lights hurt anyone.

Different ideal? You aren't some martyr... what the fuck are you even talking about? You apparently have the same ideal, but are too cool for school to take part in what essentially amounted to a collective statement against waste.
No, you were hating on people for supporting earth hour.
You took some sort of self righteous "I'm in the know, earth hour is just a media conspiracy for the liberal machine" stance, and in the process sounded like an arrogant prick. To willfully not participate is nothing other than pure laziness, or misdirected spite. Especially, if you're as energy/conservation conscious as you've claimed in this thread.

earth hour was an excellent campaign to raise awareness to the overall fuckhead wastefullness of this country. if it made one person realize, "wow turning off my lights when i don't absolutely need to be using them is a pretty simple thing to do i think i'll do it more often!", the campaign was a success. obviously turning off your lights for one hour doesn't do shit in the grand scheme of things, its about having people realize how simple it is to change youre daily habits to make the planet a better place. which is why facepalmed to the idiot who said its just a show off fest or whatever.

hahaha sure you were on a plane burning thousands of gallons of fuel and spewing pollution into the atmosphere, whatever you tried.

not trying to hate, we all have to travel lol, just saying

Earthday is somewhat useless. Do you guys have any idea how much electricity it takes to power up the thousands of factories in china?

I'd say it's more of "People in 1st world countries are the cancer of the planet"....

And that includes every person on Newschoolers!

Im gonna bet you pollute just as much as most everybody else on the site..

Im just sayin...

Ughh quit being a bunch of pussies. If you wanna conserve energy, be a liberal piece of shit and do it. If you don't want to, be a conservative piece of shit and don't do it. This green shit is getting sooo fucking old. To those of you who terrorize other people who don't shut their lights off: shut the fuck up and get down from your cross. No one cares, you are idiots.

to add to that. people who DO terrorize people FOR shutting their lights off, you shut the fuck up too.
