soo basically Im here on exchange for the semester until july 1. I know, shitty timing. I'm looking to get at least a weekend of skiing in soon as the mountains open. sooo kiwis, what mountain is the best early early season? I'm in wellington but looking to fly down to wanaka probs. help!

it kind of depends on what happens weather wise at the end of may/early june. Coronet Peak is the first to open but unless there is nothing else going its not really worth bothering.

Last season cardrona opened (24th June) with a full park set up and complete coverage, the couple of seasons before that it was mid july before they had enough snow to set up a box so can't really be certain.

Treble cone generally can be relied on get a good snow fall in June, TC opening days are often some of the best days you get up there all season as it is still before the crowds arive, however as they have limited snow making if the snow doesn't come then it can't be skied.

Basically cross youre finger and join me praying for snow, if it comes then TC cardies remarks whatever, you can't go too wrong, if it doesn't, then sorry, your shit out of luck.

Enjoy NZ anyway. B

Coronet are saying they'll open on the 6th of June, but that'll probably be BS. Last time they said that I sat up there for a week in the sunshine in shorts and tee and then gave up and came back to Dunedin.

If they do open that early it'll probably be machine snow on main trails only. The last few years they have have only had something that I would hesitate to call a park.

You'll be pretty limited anywhere in terms of open terrain in June sorry, the season doesn't really get going until July

Do they set up a few boxes before the remarks open? i know they didnt have a park last year but dont know if they did this or not.

I could be wrong, but I highly doubt it. Last year I was up weekend after opening and nothing was around. Actually, I got my pass cipped for going 'too fast' in a deserted area. I think there was only ever one small box up there all last season.

There is some fun terrain at Coronet but the attitude there is lamesauce. They don't like people who wear baggy gear and have season passes, its all about the armani and day passes.

I like skiing coronet if the snow's good, but when it's icy you have to stick to the trail and I get bored after a few runs. Yeah, the park is almost non existent.
Ruapehu is relatively dependable for snow in early season. The weather can be pretty hit or miss though (throughout the whole season, but early season especially).
Definitely go check out the south island and the southern ski areas, you won't regret it.

bump.......I hear Mt Hutt is open. anyone down there been skiing yet? it's one of the easier mtns for me to get to...considering I already have plane tix to christchurch
