alright, but how does it fit in the hand? i dodnt like the optura 100ms, but the zr series were a bit snug, which was nice, is it like an in between? for smaller hands?

I'm not that familiar with it. I shoot with a canon xl-1s.

I'm not saying go out and but an xl-1s unless your going to try to produce a high quality flick. Actually, I would probably recommend the GL-2. Nonetheless, just because I'm in freeze, doesn't mean I have $4000 to drop on video equipment anytime I want.

thats not what i mean sorry, i meant like your all high quality, and wanna sell it, but i just want one to have fun with thatll make an ok movie for me and me pals, what about the ZR50, the giuy said the battery life on the leura 40 sucked badly, and 30 minutes a charge would suck, so ya, how bouit that?! anything rong?>

No worries. Actually, I'm not trying to sell my camera. I'm not too sure about the ZR line from canon. All batteries drain quicker when its cold out, so if your shooting in really cold weather, I highly recommend investing in the largest battery you can get. Just where ever you get your camera, make sure that it is a reputable source. There is a lot of shady deals out there.

ya the actual time on the Elura is like 20 minutes, and the battery sticks out alot if you get a big one, but on the canon it just goes back and the eye peice telescopes so it zoom, were the elura was 31 hour with its biges batter the ZR was like 5 hours so,,,

id recommed a GL-2..or you can pick up a GL-1 for pretty cheap. I have a ZR40 and it works perfectly. I havent found any problem with battery life in cold weather, but i use it so much that i go into the lodge and hook it up to charge for 20 minutes... the whole thing charges in less than an hour ..i love that. The 1 CCD is aquedate, but if you want 3 better go with the GL-2. If you just want a decent DV cam to take out on the snow get a ZR because they are real small and they arent too expensive. I love my ZR40

I wouldnt trust Sony's, i dont like their lenses. get a ZR and then save your money for an XL or GL if you want to get a higher end camera later on. Thats my best recommendation

in the world of sport filmers, sony is actually prefered..i agree canon has some ill cameras, but for 1 chippers, sony almost always has bigger chips

I have an Xl-1. I'd encourage you to go Canon. I've been told they're the most resistant to moisture and I can guarantee you'll get better aftermarket/repair/warranty service from Canon than sony. I think the only major difference between the ZR 50 and ZR 40 is that the 50 takes a card to record stills on. I'm not totally sure on that but to me that doesn't justify the extra cost. Be sure to budget for the extra batteries and filthy taxes. Maybe think about getting an attachable wide abgle to. Hope this helps

the difference between the zr-40 and the zr-45mc is the 45 has a memory card for stills (mc). the 50 has the card and a 22x optical zoom, as opposed to 18.

I was readin back, and then i realised that the 40-45-50 have 1/6th inch CCD, were the 30 have 1/4inch CCD, CCD is good right? so should i get an older one?

1/4th is obviously bigger, which would mean better quality, soo yeah

yea the older ones were better, i saw one of them for about $600 awhile ago. but i personally like the colour for snow and stuff, plus there bette rlowlight if you go to cop or for urban sessions. make sure to get one with lots of manual controls and a thread diameter that is commonish

yea calgary, the older ZRs had bigger chips, and you could argue, better quality

if your only getting a 1ccd i'd say fuck sony and canon. their shit is priced way high. and on thecheap canon's the mic records the camera buzzing noise.

Oh, shit I spelt something wrong? Fuck you cocksucker!

I own a Canon Elura 40MC, awesome for my purposes so far. Sooo small, it has been perfect for bringing out to the hill but you will need extra batteries. The battery life on these mini DV cameras sucks ass if you use the LCD viewfinder.

The 40mc is a really nice single chip. nice clean vid in a tight package. canon always makes nice lenses too. Ive come from a background of hi8 and single chip digis's so I know them pretty well and the 40mc is a good cam. Im going to be shooting with the xl-1s now and its a sick camera. course Im gonna say that anyway cause i got it for dirt basically.

canon Optura series are some of the highest resolution 1ccd cameras, 520 lines of resolution and very good color reproduction. plus they have the optical image stabilizer which no other 1ccd camcorder has. My Optura Pi has produced some very nice footage, nearly comparable to 3ccd in terms of resolution.

3ccd mainly gives you the color precision required for professional work. no more bland colors or smearing. the resolution is the same, 520 vertical lines.
