Durangoo

Hey I'm going to school down in Durango next year and I was wondering if any of you are from down there or have skied down there much, and what you thought of the skiing? Any park at Purgatory or anything?

so youre going to fort lewis eh? durango is pretty cool i guess. they have a pretty decent park, nothing extravagant, but not bad at all either. there a pretty big newschool scene there too including skiers and snowboarders. THERE ARE A FUCK TON OF PEOPLE THOUGH!!!!!!!!!! like all the texans, oklahomans, basically hicks, flock to durango every weekend and holiday break. its fucking ridiculous, seriously. gaper city. the terrain is pretty shitty too, but its close to telluride which has some of the best terrain in southern colorado so if you are looking for terrain, it isnt as far as you think it would be. telluride has a pretty good park too. pm me if you wanna know more.

I lived there for three years and probably only skied Purgatory like three times. It's called Durango Ski area now, I think. I did ski a lot though, the backcountry is really choice around there. Silverton ski area is right there in, you quessed it, Silverton, just a few passes over. And like the other guy said, Telluride. There is still a pretty big mountain bike community there, which is cool, if you are into that.

I’ve lived down here for 4 years. What do you need to know?

Purg’s park is okay, but nothing special. When I ride at DMR, it more to just hang out and chill with people on the hill. They have some fun terrain and a few nice cliffs to huck. Purg is a 30-40 min drive north of town. It the regular hill more most of the college kids.

When we have a good year for snow, the City of Durango opens Chapman Hill which is a 2 minutes walk from campus. Its tiny, but they have flood lights so you hit some rails and boxes at night. There is Hesperus too (much more likely to be open in any given year than Chapman). Its another small hill but they have a park and lights for night skiing. Its about 15 min our of town.

If your in for a longer drive, it two hours to Telluride. It’s got a really chill town and sick terrain. Some kids go there regally, but I only do it if I have a long weekend (once or twice a year).

Than there’s Silverton, which is epic beyond belief. I ride their whenever I get the opportunity.

Wolf Creek is a hour-and-a-half away and is the first open in the season. They have college days every month and tickets a dirt cheap if you show them your Fort ID.

Also, there is more back country than you’ll know what to do with. There is an endless amount of sick lines in the San Juans.

Don't get the wrong idea. The skiing here isn't shitty at all, you just may be a bit disappointed you you're a park rat. I love riding down here and skied over 100 days my freshmen year.
