Dumpster Diving

My math teacher today was telling us about how his brother likes to dumpster dive. As weird as it sounds I guess he knows where to go to find the good stuff.
Anyway, he told us how his brother went to the Black Diamond factory in Cabot, VT and found 47 Black Diamond softshells in the dumpster with nothing more than minor damage. None of the outer shells had been compromised. The one that my math teacher received from him had a small rip on the inside pocket, kinda like a goggles pocket on the inside of the coat. I guess he ended up donating around 40 of them to a coat drive after he gave some away to friends.
Seems nuts that Black Diamond (and I'm sure other companies) would be wasting all of these coats when many people clearly cannot afford nice warm clothing in this economy.

thats sick. i wish there was a cool factory of some sort where i lived... i would probably start going and looking for shit like that

ive done it at the burton factory before. same stuff just outerwear with practically no damage.
also, ive never done this before, but behind most Staples is where there dumpsters are at, and i know many people who have dove in those and have found expensive ass electronics that still worked

check out your best buy or electronics store when they get a new shipment. my friends used to do that. got alot of free movies and games and stuff

Just a word of wisdom, although in a dumpster, and ultimately getting thrown away, if the dumpster is on private property,-its private property, and therefore trespassing.

I experienced this dumpster diving for wood for my fish house a few years back. The cop was friendly and I was on my way however you may not get as lucky if your plucking multiple jackets or skis etc.

thats sick

my uncle when he was at uvm used to dive at the burton factory and score free boards with tiny defects all the time. they found out about it, an now they shred there defect boards unfortunately, sorry snowboarders

this is like high class dumpster diving. i go to college in one of the poorest counties in michigan and michigan is not doing very well. but i see the townies diggin through trash at my apartments all the time. lots of kids throw out good wood from lofts and furniture and stuff.

i'd consider trying this but probly not worth any legal issues.

I dumpster everything. This summer, I ate almost all my lunches out of a stewarts dumpster. (except on tuesdays, that was garbage day, so that day I would just lift some food)But nothing pisses me off more then trash compactors. FUCK. I still havent figured out how to get into them. And living here in snow country, everyone has them.
I loved jersey, because it was urban enough where everyone had open, fence jumpable dumpsters, loaded to the brim with great food and clothes. Trader Joes was the best of them all, if you ever see a trader joes, dont even go inside, go straight to the dumpster

the problem with dumpster diving is that the store will call the cops on you because the stuff they are throwing away is most likely messed up in someway. if you eat, drink or use the product you get from the dumpster and you get sick or injured for some reason, then the store or company is liable for your injury since it was their product that caused it. just my $.02

make an edit just you dumpster diving....i wanna see how you can salvage food from a dumpster and im sure a bunch of people would watch that vid haha

i guess people are not aware that people do this with food all the time.

the food is perfectly good food. it is in packages. the dates just might be over due.

places like dunkin donuts will put the extra donuts they dont sell at the end of the night in boxes and then put them in the dumpster.

stores like trader joes will put stuff with a over due date in the dumpster and the food is perfectly fine.

like ive said previously ive never done this but i know of people that have/do dumpster dive.

They can't sell them and if they give them away or sell them mad cheap no one will buy the full price ones. A sad side affect of capitalism.

You're blowin up the spot though

only problem i had with it is that you stole food on tuesdays.... i mean cmon, you get free food every day except for one day, you can't just buy on that one day?

we read a story about this in class, its a whole underground society of people who go through dumpsters and get crazy sweet shit, its pretty cool english

there was a short essay i read last year that was about getting food from a dumpster and how some guy designated a year to living out of one, and he did really well too. I don't see anything wrong with it. One mans trash is another mans treasure, and who doesn't like free stuff?

same essay? mine was called "on dumpster diving" by Lars Engler or something like that

I'm pretty sure Blockbuster doesn't carry porn...
But yeah, tons of shit in dumpsters, however it IS a big deal if caught, especially by major corporations.
When I worked in the Costco Bakery, we'd throw away a TON of food because of the expiration dates, and the food was absolutely fine. I just sigh'd as it all got thrown away, not given to the poor.

They throw out shit loads of DVDs all the time too, just figure out the schedule, I think they do it like twice a month.

ehh. I could. I usually buy an orange juice for a dollar and have a whole meal left handed, so at least they get some of my money. I'll steal from chainstores, because they have insurance for that shit. Particularly walmart. Its different from stealing directly from a real person, which I would never do.That said, dumpster diving is also technically stealing. Unless they turn a blind eye (which they usually will) you are a thief if you dumpster dive. I dont actually see any moral complications with "stealing" garbage but whatever. If you get caught, just say your a "Waste reduction engineer engaging in the reallocation of surplus". Thats what I say

Go to a rich neighborhood after christmas.

You'll find shit that was brand new last year, barely used. But it's trash cause they have something better.

Tv's bikes, idk, lots of fun stuff.

I pick up couches and chairs off the side of the road too

Hahaha. this is classy.

I live in VT, so I guess I'll have to try KOMBI, Burton, Black Diamond, Mammut, or some of the other outdoor companies. Anybody know any others? And their addresses, hahaha.

little caesars hot and ready pizzas. you can get 5-6 at a time right after they close. boxed up, still hot. usually a bag or 2 of breadsticks too

they have already been sitting in a hot box for 4 or so hours, they aren't going to put them in the freezer and warm them up again tomorrow.

yeah dumpster diving can be quite rewarding! My buddy went to the Easton factory and checked the dumpster. He was lucky enough to find like 10 Easton Synergy shafts that had just sumthing to do with the printing of the logo, I think it had a little black line going through the logo. Anyways, a good rewarding dive for him!

I heard they punch holes through them, a lil easier then shredding the whole thing but just as affective. I know a kid that went back there a lot and used to take defective cores and sell them to kids at UVM. They were pretty cool and its a nice conversation piece to have a snowboard core on the wall.

Dunkin Donuts. We call them Dumpster Donuts, do you know how many donuts they throw out a day? So many. Or if you know someone who works there you can just get them to toss you some free ones at closing time cause they'd just be throwing them out anyway, only if their manager is chill with it though.

pretty sweet deal, I might have to hit up a best buy's dumpster sometime soon.

I do it at one single place all the time. Not saying where for fear of people moving in on our territory hahaha no but really... they throw away pounds and pounds of still wrapped and sealed amazingness. so dope.

A dispensary in Berkeley got shut down a few years back... and to hide the numbers of weed they had, they threw pounds of the stuff in dumpsters all around town.

my friend found 2. Quite an amazing easter egg hunt.

this thread is great.

we got an old pickup truck for free once from this guy up my road. we just rallied the fuck out of it in my friends field until it broke, then pushed it down this huge hill into rocks/trees/a pond with a tractor.

that wasnt really out of a dumpster though....
