Duckin Ropes

if you do it out west at a big mountain you could potentially die. Those trails are marked off for a reason. On the East Coast not so much.

On the east coast we build mini booters and jump the ropes / fences. Then land on the steep ass back part, the only place where we get any powder landings.

yeah definitely different east vs west. Im pretty sure the patrol at my mountain dont really care unless you get hurt or something, or if park crew is working and you run through the park hah

generally out west if you look past the ski area boundary you'll see either a 3000 foot cliff or a massive cornice above you waiting to drop a wind slab on some idiots

when i was in Breckenridge over christmas there was very little snow, but there was this one patch with a couple feet of good snow (at Chair 10) that was roped off. but it was surrounded by inbounds runs. We skied it a bunch of times in a row and it was fantastic (even though it was only about 150m long). so it was "out of bounds" but not dangerous which i liked.

my friend was up at mount tremblant and he ducked a rope and ski patrol took his pass but didnt think twice to take his stub. so he just skied down, went to the base gave the ticket people his stub and got a new pass

Let me fix that for you"Lol SKIING on the east coast just meanss you're gonna fuck up your skis on rocks and dirt"

could cause an avalanche onto an open ski run in some places. i try not to do it, but im not gonna say i dont ever do it

i always duck but i live in vt. its the best way tog et the dank pow u just have to know the mt and the good spots. watch out for logs under a foot of fresh in the pre season. broken legs are a big injury from just that.

i also like ducking at night with my headlamp. nigh skiing in the trees with some fresh is sooo sick. iv done it a few times when we have a storm and its all untracked.

FALSE. i ski powder at Blue Mountain in Collingwood every time im there because only a few know where to find it.

this, or theres enough snow and mountain ops/ski patrol are too lazy to actually open the run

A 13 year old local skier ducked a rope at Vail a couple of weeks ago. He got caught in an avalanche and died.

The same day a skier died in an inbounds slide at Winter Park.

Runs are closed for a reason

They also strategically keep stuff closed out east to build snow pack or save conditions for the weekend tourists who bring in the big $

I'm not 13. pussy.

But I'm also not going to de-rail this thread.

Seriously though, shits dangerous and shouldnt be taken lightly.

It's totally fun until you get caught, fined, killed or kill others thanks to your stupidity. Esepcially with a season like this one.

Want to show me where some of those spots are? Usually I just get really choppy stuff. I did get this one day where it dumped and I got to ski fresh untracked boot deep powder on rabbits run.

Yes. Its fucking closed for a reason. We (being ski patrol) don't close shit because we want to. We close it because:

A) its about to fucking slide and the avy danger is high

B) There is snow making going on there

C) there are open mine shafts there

D) you could run into a little ass motherfucker that you can't see around that blind corner you're on

E) doesn't fucking matter. Reason is, there is a reason that that line is there but YOU don't know what it is. Don't fucking duck it.

Fun fact of the day, there have only been 3 deaths at Park City Mountain Resort. All of them were caused by inbounds slides because someone else ducked a rope, causing a slide above those people, and they got buried.

Don't be a dick.

I fully respect that ^ but I really think its a lot different here in the east. I ski at Sugarloaf in ME and most of the time you can see clearly where the run goes. Obviously I don't do it when its sketchy

Ditto.

They dont rope off runs for no reason. Example: Gaper ducked a rope this early season at Snowmass. Hit a snow covered waterline going to a snowmaken machine and fucked his knee up bad. Out for the season.

if you duck lines the magical goat ferry will find you. butt rape you then take your pass and use it to choke himself while he

ducking ropes is no big ussaully its not steep enough nor is there enough snow to start a slide, if there was they would bomb it then open it..

Speaking pureley from a snow type standpoint BC is relativly safe (which

just means you are less likley to set off an avy, please dont go into

the backcountry without avy gear and knowledge) and Europe depends where

your at but really the most dangerous mountains range in North America

as far as Avy goes is the Rockies. The light Fluffy Jizztastic powder we

enjoy in the Rockies does not bond well with other layers of snow or

even the layer is fell in causing huge cornices and slabs to slide

often.

see, here in pennsylvania, runs only get roped off because the patrol thinks they're saving lives from avalanches and 300 foot cliffs when all they're really doing is protecting your bases from getting scratched.

Thats what you think, brosidon. The Patrollers are payed by the resort, and the resort's priority is to have as much of the mountain open all the time. There is a reason why it is closed, even if it isn't immediately apparent.

Don't. Fucking. Duck. Ropes.

Ducking ropes around here can lead to midnight romps through the wilderness, possible raping, and multiple homicides. Oh and you might get your pass pulled.

yeah, I'm sure theres a reason for having a run thats 1/4 of a mile long, 2 feet of natural snow, with nothing but grass under it closed, but frankly I don't give a shit and I'm going to ski it because it's the only pow I have a chance of getting here. It's not going to slide, it's not leading into dangerous territory, it's closed because theres no base and people would scratch up their bases and bitch to management. Don't even go to the hidden dangers and blower lines shit, I wouldn't be doing it if I didn't know exactly what the fuck I was doing.

Ima. Keep. Ducking. Ropes.

The ski patroller guy has the West coast portion of this correct. This guy has the East Coast portion of this correct.

West coast, it's generally closed because it's gonna slide.

East coast, it's generally closed because someone would scratch their skis. In some cases, it's more than that. Being understaffed is one of them.

if you're ducking, keep it responsible. Don't go boasting about it, be discrete. Don't get yourself hurt. Don't ski alone if you might get yourself hurt.

Duck ropes on the EC. Totally understandable seeing as we are all powder hounds in some way but it's most certainly different in the west. It's a thin rope separating life and death. Don't be that hard of an ass and put your self in harms way and others.

poor language for ski patrol...this maybe true west but in the east i duck ropes on the regular and there is no danger AT ALL. i find freshness most days i ride and its only bc i go looking for it. would i do it out west hell no

You can get a class B misdemeanor and get your name on a blacklist not allowing you to buy season passes in the future if you get caught out @ some resorts in Utah.

When you duck a rope to a closed area they are not just concerned about you endangering you self - you also could be endangering others by potentially causing a slide that buries people below the terrain that you are skiing. It also endangers the patrolmen / rescue workers who potentially would need to rescue you / recover your body...
