Droid w/out data

So I found a droid on craigslist for $75, and im thinking about getting it. Only problem is my plan that im on now doesnt have a data plan with it. So if I bought that droid and that switched my phones over the internet would it work? In the future im going to be getting a data plan and thats why im getting a droid. I really want this phone, and my current phone got wet and now the 4 and the 7 do not work so I can only call people from my contacts. Does anyone know anything about this?

you absolutely 100000% want to put data on your account when you activate that phone. (Actually, they probably won't even do an ESN swap without adding a data plan.) If you don't have a data package, I believe you are charged on average $.002/kb. It doesn't sound like much, but that shit will add up in NO TIME and you'll have a $500 phone bill.
Spend the $30 and add a data package. You shouldn't have to resign a contract to do this as it is just an add on feature.
Hope this helps.
BTW - droids are the shit....especially if you are technologically savvy.

Yeah, the data is so integrated in to these phones that it would be VERY easy to accidentally use it. For instance, most droids use visual voicemail, so anytime someone leaves you a VM it will use data. As such, I don't believe the carriers will even activate a smart phone on your account without adding the data because they don't want you turning around after you've got a $500 phone bill and saying "well why would you guys even activate one of these phones without data since that's what they're designed for. if you would have told me how this stuff works, I would have just added the $30 so I didn't get stuck with this $500 bill". That's not to say that you would do that, but they've got to be careful from a liability standpoint.
I know you don't think you'll use any data, but you'd be surprised.
And why wouldn't you want data? What's the point of carrying one of these phones if you aren't going to use it? A droid without data is pointless. It's just a big ass phone you've got to haul around without receiving any of the benefits of having a smart phone.

Yeah Pretty sure you're right.

I have an eris, Im not too bad with tech just in the dark with what you can do with droids.

PM me?

you wont be able to activate the phone without a data plan, speaking from experience on verizon

i'm interested in this holy grail as well...

and to the op, like everyone said, data plan is key. droids are constantly sending and receiving data. i'd pull mine out right now and list everything off but its not next to me currently haha.

on most carriers you can't get ANY smart phone (windows phone 6, windows 7, android, meeGo, or iOS) without a data plan. However, Verizon used to allow a few windows 6 phones to be purchased without a data plan. The last one which they allowed was the HTC Touch (not Touch Pro). I purchased this phone, cracked it, removed windows and put a port of Android 2.2 on it. I now have a touch screen android without a data plan. The only downside is, this phone doesn't have wi-fi, so I can't download apps directly, I have to find the apps online (usually on developers sites) and put them on my mini-sd card..then I can install them on my phone. Kind of a pain..but way better than windows 6.

You won't be able to do it on the major carriers but I'm using a droid on Page Plus Cellular (same network as verizon) and I don't have a data plan.

I completely agree. If I could find a way to make $30 extra a month so that I could afford data I would likely do it.
