Droid any good?

My phone is on the fritz and turns out my mom has an upgrade I can snag so I think I might cop a new phone. I literally do not know a single person who owns the droid, so I was wondering if you guys have them and have opinions on them?

I heard there is some epic new google/htc phone coming out that sounds really pimp, but I also heard google might sell it independently from carriers, meaning a) it will probably be like $500 and b) it will probably only work with at&t and t-mobile (are you fucking kidding? who on at&t would buy that?)

Anyway, is the droid legit? I would use it for calling, texting, email, music, and whatever random shit you can use them for like maps, facebook, weather, etc.

Thanksssss

I've had the droid since the day it came out. Really sick phone it does literally everything you want it to. Sometimes though, it REALLY pisses me off. It gets really glitchy on the internet. Hopefully they can work these kinks out as more updates come out.

Widgets are dope. I have the weather channel widgets, one for home and one for the mountain. Soooo many good apps. One i've found to be really good is I music. It has almost every song and you can listen to it then download it straight to your library. There's literally so much stuff I could talk about but i don't have time to right a long post. if you want more info just PM me, or factory81 or something like that knows alot about the droid/phones in general.

yeah you can'e expect a brand new model to be perfect. tehy always work the kinks out as it goes

yeah im a droid fanboy.
i forgot titslol, were you in SLC now? if so...you can sit and mess around on mine. but yeah its tight. i like verizon, and in SLC it works (the phone coverage) pretty good. Although a spot or two has no 3g coverage.
5mp camera, led flash854x320 or something ridiculous screen res.16gb built in storageplus its like buy 1 droid get 1 droid free or something now, or i think you can find them as low as $119yada yada
really good phone. its literally a computer on a phone. i can sit and use bittorrent on my phone while using the gps, while listening to streaming internet radio, while texting, while masterbating to PORN APPS. Yeah how about that apple fanboys? Do you have a porn app? Yea I didn't think so.
im just saying the phone can do it all. and since 2.0.1 update the phone is even faster yet in terms of speed.
i too have had the droid since day 1.

also any legit app that is out on the iphone is out on the android O/S also. so don't let people talk down on the droid saying ohhh iphone has sooo many apps. yeah how about a like $100 GPS app, while the droid has it built in.
How do you think i get around SLC? I use the voice recognition and say "super 8 sandy utah", google pops up with the number, address, and i can click either the address and it takes me to the gps, or i can click the the phone number and call them.
places directory shows you where shit is around you based on your gps location, reallllly useful as a tourist right now.
one of my favorite things is just being able to use google maps to see satellite, terrain, or map view of where I am.
at&t sucks. if the iphone was out on verizon it would have done much better because verizons network is better equipped to handle the capacity that data use puts on it.
the droid + verizon = love at first sight.

its like the razr phone. its not that hard after you use it for a lil bit also some of the cases are a bitch with typing.
but you can always use the onscreen keyboard

so 2 people have it? I guess I'm not too surprised considering that I can't find anyone in real life who owns one from asking all my friends from utah, massachusetts, and my relatives...

well let's not waste our time comparing to the iphone please, from the reviews I've read though the droid is pretty much the second best phone out there, but I guess there's some epic new phone that might be out next month so I think I'm gonna wait on that. I thought about getting an iphone, but leaving my family plan for att would cost way too much and the verizon phones seem to be getting good enough that the iphone isn't really much better, just more pleasant to use.

ya the contracts suck you get locked into spending so much money once you get a smartphone, that's why I'm tryin to get my nerd on and do so some research so I'm not paying out the ass every month for my piece of shit phone to keep working poorly.

i heard they are dope phones but there are mad glitches in it. i was on the phone with my friend who has one and this is how the conversation went. fuck, wait wat the fuck, fuck this dumb fucking phone, you still there, motherfucker i hate this dumb fucking phone.

Isn't there being an IPhone released on Verizon soon? Or did I hear completely wrong, haha.

Anyways, everyone I know that has the Motorola Droid absolutely loves it. I had the Droid Eris which I also loved, but I was having some technical problems with it (just my phone, not all Eris' have the problems I had) and I really just ended up not having the money to pay 30 bucks a month for it so I ended up returning it.

But being able to check the weather, my email, internet, and most of all the maps was amazing. I miss Google maps more than anything, especially since I live in the city and being able to get directions using public transportation on my phone was AMAZING.

You can head into Verizon and get the Droid and try it out for 30 days. If you don't like it, you can return it, but you do have to pay a restocking fee of $35 which kinda blows, but at least you are able to switch if you don't like it.

well it's obviously not as good as far as how smoothly the iphone operates and how user friendly it is, but the droid can actually do anything an iphone can do other than how well the iphone works with itunes... Functionally the droid is actually a pretty legit substitute for the iphone.

what?

neither of those companies make a legit smartphone, samsung has one but it has windows mobile so fuck that. And any phone I get on verizon will have a contract with it... so what are you talking about?

I think what makes the Droid a capable phone is its specs - they outshine the Iphone in every regard. But there is probably a new iphone that basically must overcome the droid in terms of specs, and even some of the upcoming ANDROID based phones.
Snapdragon CPU based (Android) phones (1ghz cpu, being released on major carriers soon)
There is some rumor Google is dinking around with maybe doing their OWN phone, but I think its unlikely given how Google just doesn't do hardware, they do software. They had a LOT to do with the Droid. The Droid is the next generation, or next step for the Android OS
The Android OS is showing more promise and Android based phones are expected to surpass Iphones in like 2011 if I recall.
I don't think the GUI is hard to use, and I think the phone is just very capable an most importantly the service is just killer. It works really well in like 9 / 10 spots in SLC it seems like. 3g coverage at all the resorts I've been to.
The Android OS is the big underlying thing that people are discussing here, the OS is kind of like Windows now in the sense of you can just download 1372 bull shit apps, clutter your screen with a fuckin ton of widgets and gadgets and icons, and have like your phone doing 3-4-5 things at once. You can install GUI's or in other words change the physical appearance of the desktop. To say the SenseUI GUI, or MotoBlur GUI. If im not mistaken, even an Iphone GUI.
The usability and speed of the phone is increasing with every update. Android 2.0.1 was a big upgrade I think. Came out just before Christmas and it fucking really made the phone speedy.

Verizon has a 30 day return thing though, buy it, hate it, return it.
There are always new phones coming out, just like computer hardware, so deciding what to buy is basically like what do I buy now. Becuase you never ask yourself hmm what should i sign on to for 2 years today? So you basically need a phone in the next week, not the next quarter of a year. Or you wouldn't be talking about this I don't think.
If there is news of a new killer phone....you have 30 days to return that bitch and say i'll wait to fuckin be in a new contract.
The phones apps are limited by your wallet. The cool shit costs money, but there a ton of simple ones out and some even really useful ones that are free in fact.
You buy an Android based phone and you are investing Googles success with these phones. You purchasing a phone will in turn make my Google experience better as the phone surpasses the Iphone in terms of developers working on apps, apps in the wild for users to download, and most important...choices
Motorola, Samsung and HTC all make Android based phones. You don't have to have a Motorola Droid. In fact the Samsung U939 or something on T-Mobile looks impressive specs wise, but I haven't played with it.
Ultimately the more power under the hood the more you will be able to do with your phone as the smartphone market continues to have more advanced apps / games that demand more resources. So buy as much as you can afford in that regard. The phone cost is like 2% of the cost of the plan over 2 years......and then you will never live without 3G again because you fucking love a smartphone.

^ you seem to know your mobile phones, that is good. i partake in that as well.

anyways, the droid on paper is simply one of the best phones to date. great resolution, snapdragon, qwerty keyboard(which could use some work), etc.

the droid doesn't support multitouch which some might hate, but i think the guys at xda have made a new rom that supports it? not entirely sure so dont hold me to it.

the milestone is exactly like the droid but it supports hspa networks and has multitouch.

anyways, phone wise, wait til CES is over and then decide. there calls for large amounts of revealings, especially from htc. their first half of 2010 phones leaked and for the most part, look especially great(htc bravo in particular). and we will probably hear from google and what the status of the nexus one will be. it looks to be a great phone, but as you said, google might sell it directly from them, which is perfect for people wanting an unlocked phone. canadians wont be able to use it though, since i dont think it runs on 850/1900 umts.

so, sparknotes: id say wait til ces is done(jan 10th) and see if anything is coming, if not, the droid is wonderful and will be the best if its updates do as they should.

snapdragon is the code name for a new CPU coming out for smartphones. 1ghz cpu + android OS
The Android world just has a lot going for it.

yea I'm hesitant to get the droid cause that 1ghz phone coming out some time soon sounds epic, but I think I'm just gonna send it and get the droid cause at the end of the day I pretty much just want to check email and listen to pandora and shit so I'm sure the droid will be dope, and if the new one comes out in 30 days I can swap it.

Is the droid going to be able to update to snapdragon? I don't know I'm just skeptical because it seems like the motorola droid was the first phone to come out with android and now all these other phones are progressing very quickly and the OG motorola droid is going to be left behind.

that's pretty much how the guy pitched it to me. Blackberry is the email route for sure but hell I ain't no business woman. He said that Droids are designed to do music and shit too (got hooked up w dope headphones when I got it)... actually he specifically noted that I can upload my music to it or just use pandora which is sick because I'm a klutz about my ipod.

Like I said, just got it so I don't know what every little do dad does but it's been legit so far.In the process of switching email accounts so my email isn't on par yet... but they do make you set up a gmail account so you can pretty much stream everything together. Wish I could tell you more. I feel like if I end up looooathing it, I got 30 days and I'll just send it back. Don't see that happening though.

make sure you have a gmail account before you go get the phone, it will make processing everything like ten times faster

I have the Droid and love it. Pretty much for all the reasons stated above. I haven't found it to be glitchy tho, or any more glitchy than any of my Apple products. I can type faster on the physical keyboard than the onscreen. And you can't beat Verizon for coverage. I have a friend with an iPhone that visitied me the other day. He had his iPhone for months and when he got here it was the first time he could use 3G. I have to work pretty hard to find a place with no 3G coverage.

I'm on it right now, had it for a few days and its so sick. Pretty much full webpage urls and the g3 is fast. So far no complaints, apps are nice too

you must have tried out one of the fake ones at walmart becasue the buttons are super easy to push down.. and i got this phone and i for sure recommend it.. it can do everything you ever want and its a perfect swap for an iphone on verizon!

snapdragon is a new cpu that will be found in upcoming phones. not the motorola droid that was released earlier this year.

Im due for an upgrade in a few weeks and im looking at the droid. The only consistently bad thing that ive heard about it is the battery life. Anyone know from experience how bad it really is? Like are we talking hours or days?

I have one and love it. I recomend it. I would tell you more but i dont have time to write a lot. PM me if you have any questions

mine actually has pretty good battery life. i mean it makes it through the day no problem and i charge it every night so i see no problem.

depends on what you do. turn bluetooth, wireless, run the GPS, while watching Youtube and things might suck down battery quicker.

If you turn bluetooth and wireless off the battery life is great. It can last a day or two. Once you start downloading bittorrent files and just doing a lot of cpu intensive tasks....the droid starts to take a drain on power.

I got the droid for christmas and it owns. It feels like im using a computer not a phone.
Plus there is an app called gameboid which is a game boy advanced emulator so you can play pokemon and shit for free. I will never be bored again

people will argue that the snapdragon cpu will suck ass because of the power consumption mixed with the fact that the droid not only has a 550mhz arm cortex cpu. that cpu btw is underclocked from 600mhz to conserve power / heat.

i think the droid is a great phone to get, and it has proven architecture. the snapdragon is taking its sweet time to get out

straight outta wikipedia, 4 motherfucker processors in your shit.

Arm Cortex A8 600 MHz underclocked to 550 MHz

PowerVR SGX 530 GPU

430MHz TMS320 C64x DSP (Digital signal processor) + ISP (Image Signal Processor)

Phones with snapdragon and shit though....they will have 8 megapixel cameras and probably support for like 64gb SDHC cards. Phones are getting retarded.

They are the new PC. You can only have the coolest phone for no longer than 2 months.

bump, looking at buying one, im very close to pulling the trigger.

can you bring this skiing? my current phone (env2) is a fucking brick, and im not worried about breaking it in a fall. hows the durability?

I keep it in a zipped pocket in my pants when I'm skiing. I'm a little scared I will fall and it will break but its really the only source of communication with buddies on the mountain if we split up, wanna meet up, etc.
