Driving SF to Tahoe

What's the spring driving like SF to Tahoe: ever get that snowy? I'm gonna be living in SF this summer (from winters in Telluride) wondering if the snow tires should stay on till after I'm done skiing in CA late spring....

When are you coming?

Do you have a 4 wheel drive car?

I've got like 25-30 days in this year and I've had to have chains on my car over 3/4ths of the time....

In short bring them. If you have a two wheel drive car it doesn't matter you need chains anyway.

i've never really needed chains after mid april, and i've driven up every weekend and then some this season and last season. If you don't have 4wd or awd and decent tires, just carry a pair of chains in your car.

This time of year you shouldn't have an issue. I drive a 2wd car and from Davis it's 2 hours without chains, usually add an extra hour or two with chains, but that's more because of the traffic that usually accompanies chain control. From the bay, I would say the drive, without chains or traffic, is 3.5-4 hours

Yeah depends what you drive, 2wd carry chains just in case, 4wd with good tires or winter tires I wouldn't worry about it.
