Doomsday Virus

A malware attack that has infected some computers for more than a year may cause tens of thousands of Americans to lose their Internet connection on Monday.

The only way for users to prevent losing their Internet connection is to do a quick check for malware on their computer. One way to do this is to visit a website the FBI set up for users to determine if their computers are infected. The site also walks users through what steps to take if their computer is infected.

Hackers are to blame for the malware attack, which was part of an international online advertising scam that resulted in more than 570,000 infected computers around the world. The malicious software disabled users' antivirus software, which could also make their computer prone to other issues.

The FBI caught the hackers last year, but the agents soon discovered they could not simply turn off the servers being used to control the computers, because victims of the attack would lose their ability to go online. In an unprecedented move, the FBI brought in a private company to set up clean servers to support the victims of the attack. However, it is a temporary fix and the safety net system will be shut down at 12:01 EDT Monday, July 9.

There have been repeated warnings issued to the public about the attack from Internet service providers and internet companies, including Facebook (FB) and Google (GOOG), which both issued warning messages on their sites if the companies detected that a user's computer might be infected.

Despite these warnings, the FBI estimates that there are still more than 277,000 computers infected worldwide and about 64,000 in the United States.

Here's the link to check your computer.

I found out from the news.

But I just figured that a lot of Newschoolers are pretty dependent on their comps, just trying to help man.

Yeah, I'll pass on letting the FBI scan my computer to determine if I'm "infected". Obviously they have the ability to hack me and see what's on my comp, but I'm not just going to hand it to them.

yeah man - cp is illegal!!

lol, for real though, I don't want any of my browsing history, etc. to land me on some list. they've got a list for everything these days.

You guys are fucking dumb. You go onto the website and it says if you are infected. You don't do anything. It is on the news why don't you turn on the TV. He was trying to help so none of you guys are infected and it's almost like a DOS attack. And to the person who said buy a mac. haha you sir are the dumbest of them all. Macs can fucking get viruses too you fucking dumb fuck. Do some research, build a sick ass PC, and don't be a dumb fuck and get some antivirus. Also, my friends brother just bought an 1100 dollar Macbook and my 500 dollar laptop has better specs than that thing, and my $800 built PC has 4x better specs

Thanks man.

I spent way too much money on my computer (which is a mac) to risk getting this shit. I was just thinking others are in the same boat as me.

+k for not being an ass haha

I just don't understand how some people are so ignorant and stubborn as to they think only what they think and won't change their mind even if it is hurting them. Just wait until they get the virus and we are all good :D

LOLOLLOLOLOL I havent had an antivirus software in years and i havent gotten a single virus, try not clicking on every god damn .bit and .tinyurl you see on twitter and well see how long it takes you to get one. honestly as long as youre not a dumbfuck its actually difficult to get a virus

well that and windows has it's own defender pre installed in it.. (assuming you have windows) but the virus he is talking about the US government has had a filter on it for years and now they are undoing the filter because it is costing money (more debt) so that's why..

i do have windows, but yeah i understand the situation, but i just want everyone to know once this filter is lifted your computer isn't just going to get raped by a virus. be smart about what you click and download and you'll be fine. Use a secure web browser such as google chrome or firefox and you wont get fucked.

All this male ware does is changes your DNS settings. If you don't want to use that website to check then check your internet adapter's settings for your DNS and see if they are changed. If it looks odd, google the address to check if its safe.

Yeah, gtfo mac fanboys, the Linux lord is in the house. Install Gentoo and then let me know how viruses are treating you.

Basicly all of Swedens internet is fucked up right now. They say it´s because of the virus. It took me ages to log onto NS

My old computer that i used as a child is probably infected, hell my dad had to fully wipe my hard drive about 5 times because i always downloaded viruses and shit haha.

okay now im going to delete this from my threads so i can avoid the incoming shitstorm.

hahaha IE is legit... people dont use that anymore? Its got apps now.. dont we all want more apps?

And I have never had a virus software for maybe 5 years like someone else said. If I do suspect a virus, I just restore my computer to 2 weeks prior and cut my losses. Usually isnt much. Basic computer knowledge saves you from alot of viruses
