Doomsday clock NOW

oh, so its not just a countdown to 12/12/12, just a log of events that supposedly hint at the "apocalypse" thats "imminent". Whatever, *rolls eyes*

basically to my understanding,
when the clock reaches midnight humanity is over, blown up whatever.
at those dates youll see it closer and farther away from midnight, it is closer during ww1,ww2, the cold war etc. turning back the clock im guessing is to try to make everyone not die or blow up

the doomsday clock has nothing to do with global warming, it mesures how close the united states is to launching a nuclear attack
like during the Cuban missile crisis where it was 2 minutes to midnight

pretty much. according to their site it now also includes global warming and biotechnology (/biological warfare?) mainly nuclear though

Can you clarify what you mean by completely arbitrary?

yes it is a subjective measurement-- however the opinions that move the clock come from highly knowledgeable people that base their opinions on their real understanding of current circumstances and .

the point is that they do not move the clock as they please -- if that were the case wouldn't you imagine it'd be 59 minutes to midnight?

It should be taken as an objective measurement of their understanding of the world. Yes it is arbitrary in the sense that it is speculative, but not completely arbitrary as a means of saying that it isn't worth accepting as a valid measurement.

it is a panel of professionals who convert their understanding of the circumstances of the world to a measurement of how close we are to creating an uninhabitable world.

Originally founded by the scientists who worked on the Manhattan project and thus a measurement of the nuclear threat it has since expanded to include the changing climate and environmental threats that we have control over.
