A Military Story -- Don't Close Your Blinds

The other day, my nine year old son wanted to know why we were at war. My husband looked at our son and then looked at me. My husband and I were in the Army during the Gulf War and we would be honored to serve and defend our Country again today. I knew that my husband would give him a good explanation.

My husband thought for a few minutes and then told my son to go stand in our front living room window. He said 'Son, stand there and tell me what you see?'

'I see trees and cars and our neighbor's houses.' he replied.

'OK, now I want you to pretend that our house and our yard is the United States of America and you are President Bush.'

Our son giggled and said 'OK.'

'Now son, I want you to look out the window and pretend that every house and yard on this block is a different country' my husband said.

'OK Dad, I'm pretending.'

'Now I want you to stand there and look out the window and pretend you see Saddam come out of his house with his wife, he has her by the hair and is hitting her. You see her bleeding and crying. He hits her in the face, he throws her on the ground, then he starts to kick her to death. Their children run out and are afraid to stop him, they are screaming and crying, they are watching this but do nothing because they are kids and they are afraid of their father. You see all of this son.... what do you do?'

'Dad?'

'What do you do son?'

'I'd call the police, Dad.'

'OK. Pretend that the police are the United Nations and they take your ca ll, listen to what you know and saw but they refuse to help. What do you do then son?'

'Dad.......... but the police are supposed to help!' My son starts to whine.

'They don't want to son, because they say that it is not their place or your place to get involved and that you should stay out of it,' my husband says

'But Dad...he killed her!!' my son exclaims.

'I know he did...but the police tell you to stay out of it. Now I want you to look out that window and pretend you see our neighbor who you're pretending is Saddam turn around and do the same thing to his children.'

'Daddy..he kills them?'

'Yes son, he does. What do you do?'

'Well, if the police don't want to help, I will go and ask my next door neighbor to help me stop him.' our son says.

'Son, our next door neighbor sees what is happening and refuses to get involved as well. He refuses to open the door and help you stop him,' my husband says.

'But Dad, I NEED help!!! I can't stop him by myself!!'

'WHAT DO YOU DO SON?' Our son starts to cry.

'OK, no one wants to help you, the man across the street saw you ask for help and saw that no one would help you stop him. He stands taller and puffs out his chest. Guess what he does next son?'

'What Daddy?'

'He walks across the street to the old ladies house and breaks down her door and drags her out, steals all her stuff and sets her house on fire and then...he kills her. He turns around and sees you standing in he window and laughs at you. WHAT DO YOU DO?'

'Daddy...'

'WHAT DO YOU DO?'

Our son is crying and he looks down and he whispers, 'I'd close the blinds, Daddy.'

My husband looks at our son with tears in his eyes and asks him...'Why?'

'Because Daddy.....the police are supposed to help people who needs them...and they won't help.... You always say that neighbors are supposed to HELP neighbors, but they won't help either...they won't help me stop him...I'm afraid....I can't do it by myself Daddy.....I can't look out my window and just watch him do all these terrible things and...and.....do nothing...so...I'm just going to close the blinds.... so I can't see what he's doing.......and I'm going to pretend that it is not happening.'

I start to cry.

My husband looks at our nine year old son standing in the window, looking pitiful and ashamed at his answers to my husbands questions and he says...'Son'

'Yes, Daddy.'

'Open the blinds because that man.... he's at your front door...'WHAT DO YOU DO?'

My son looks at his father, anger and defiance in his eyes. He balls up his tiny fists and looks his father square in the eyes, without hesitation he says: 'I DEFEND MY FAMILY DAD!! I'M NOT GONNA LET HIM HURT MOMMY OR MY SISTER, DAD!!! I'M GONNA FIGHT HIM, DAD, I'M GONNA FIGHT HIM!!!!!'

I see a tear roll down my husband's cheek and he grabs our son to his chest and hugs him tight, and says... 'It's too late to fight him, he's too strong and he's already at YOUR front door son.....you should have stopped him BEFORE he killed his wife, and his children and the old lady across the way. You have to do what's right, even if you have to do it alone, before it's too late.' my husband whispers.

THAT scenario I just gave you is WHY we are at war with Iraq. When good men stand by and let evil happen son, THAT is the greatest EVIL of all. Our President is doing what is right. We, as a free nation, must understand that this war is a war of humanity. WE must remove evil men from power so that we can continue to live in a free world where we are not afraid to look out our window so that my nine year old son won't grow up in a world where he feels that if he just 'closes' the blinds the atrocities in the world won't affect him. 'YOU MUST NEVER BE AFRAID TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT! EVEN IF YOU HAVE TO DO IT ALONE!' BE PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN! BE PROUD OF OUR TROOPS!! SUPPORT THEM!!! SUPPORT AMERICA!! SO THAT IN THE FUTURE OUR CHILDREN WILL NEVER HAVE TO CLOSE THEIR BLINDS...'

This should be printed in every newspaper and posted in every school in America. Of course that won't happen so we'll use the internet.

Most of those I know who enlisted or were called up from the National Guard are happy to fight for their country. They know damn well when they sign up that it means they might have to risk their lives. My cousin is there right now and he doesn't enjoy it, but he is proud to be a part of it. If everyone would just come together and support our troops and their cause, perhaps we could move the country in a forward direction.

Also, don't be retarded...there is not going to be a draft!!!! Why would we need one...there are plenty of troops over there already handling the situation.

I just dont agree with America becoming the police and messing with these middel eastern countries. And when the father said 'its to late' I dont see how it would be to late to defend yourself once your sure of a major attack. Im not saying that terrorists who took out the world trade center didnt atack america, but they were not part of a countries army and there are 20 000 people dying every day (thats about 10 times more) in other parts of the world from hunger and easily treated disease. Its not like we dont have the medicine or food to save these people. If i was that 9 year old looking out the window at the rest of the world, i would be helping those less fortunate than my country, and improving my countries reputation so the rest of the world didnt hate me or think i was an arrogant redneck who only wants to have a good war. Im sorry, but the Father in that story comes of as being an overly patriotic redneck and an asshole. The child at least seems to have some sense of morality and what should actually be done.

That story is a horrible analogy. It overly simplifies what has happened between our country and Iraq and then it tries to say that we went there to protect the Iraqi citizens. Funny because I thought we went to war because of the WMD's. Also if we were there purely in humanitarian interest then why aren't we also in Sudan where there's mass genocide going on? That was a good story and I'm sure that it was easily passed off on many simple-minded people, but not me.

most of the people who posted in this thread fail to ralize the main point of the story, it isnt about saddam just killing his wife and all the other bad shit he does in the story, its about waiting and doing nothing, by only putting sanctions on iraq, all we were doing was making the people suffer, none of these sanctions affected saddam at all, so he just kept on doing what he felt like, he used the food for oil act to line his own pockets, and he kept completely disregarding the UN, using his doctrine of preemption, Bush went into Iraq, and he took out an evil leader than murdered his own people, like in the story, but he also took him out before he was strong enough to do anything to America, the whole Iraq had WMD thing was bullshit probably, and im actually glad that Iraq didnt have any WMD when we invaded, because Saddam would have used them on our troops, so waiting and doing nothing until he attained the WMD, which the UN obviously would have done, would have been much of a worse course of action, President Bush wanted to get the right thing done, so he had balls and did it in his first term, because he knew it was the right thing to do for the world, and it wouldnt have been done if he had waited until his second term and he wasnt reelected, President Bush acted at the right time, and he saved the lives of many american soldiers and iraqi civilians b doing so

obviously it wasnt meant to be taken literaly... if it was it wouldnt have been trying so hard to symbolise countrys and how people act to justify a war. If it was to be taken literlay its about a kid who is going to grow up and live a fucked up life because his dad doesnt know how to raise a family. The author of that story was trying to make a point about a deeper issue than what was on the surface. He didnt even do it well. inface he did it quite horibly by makeing it blantently obvious. I guess the author realized that he would have to dumb down the story so that his target audience of war mongering redneck might have a chance of understanding it.

that story would have been an amazing analogy if it had even the slightest bit of truth in it. that is just some crazy conservative bullshit propaganda if you ask me. sure saddam was not up to much good, but there were and still are much greater evils in the world (ie. north korea and..osama bin laden) but that story makes it sound like saddam was trying to take over the whole world or 'block' in this case, and that he was a real threat to america (which in its self is debatable). so in my opinion i think that story should not be posted on every fuckin message board because it is filled with so much phony emotional bullshit which tries to make you supposrt Bush's corrupt cause.

A better analogy would be the guy across the street (bin laden) is killing his wife and kids, so the son (US) goes over to some other persons house (Iraq) who's unrelated to the first guy and tries to fuck him up.

moreover, the argument saying 'if you do that, why don't you do this' is irrelevant. yo can do everything at the same time, and you got to start somewhere.

last, the example given by this man was on a particular subject and i do not remember in the story that any of the neighbors had aids.
