What's the difference between the 5 donator status? Is it just how much money you contribute?

You receive a different color symbol for each level, $5 is one green dollar sign and the highest is $50 for a coin.

You can donate by the NS store.

The more money you donate, the higher you show up on the "users online" bar. You get recognition by being a legit user and if you see Doug, he could buy you a beer.
