Don;t make rails from PVC

They get ground down and weaker after a couple years of use. I was using mine last night and the rail cracked. one of the screws that was holding the pipe down came up and took out a piece of my edge and made the biggest hole in the ptex. There's a huge part that you can see the core. Also where it took the edge out part of the sidewall (well not really they're fujatives but I dunno what you call it on that) broke off. AHHGG

The last ones blurry but you can tell how bad it is

HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That sucks man. I use PVC for backyard rails, but we replace them often. A good shop could probably repair that, but I would just drop another 300 on new fujatives, or try to pick up that same pair cheap again.

try to send the skis back...if you can, i wouldn't know i never had to try and use a K2 garrentee

even if you dont replace them every year, i would unscrew them, and rotate it 180 degrees, so you're sliding on a fresh side.

Make sure to replace as soon as shit cracks..not every year.

I've been trying to think up a way to enforce the pvc..perhaps sliding a smaller sized pvc tube inside of the main one? It would have to fit really well.

Maybe some sort of hardening foam you could pour down the pvc so that it doesn't crack?

I'm still not even sure if that would work because it might just be the fact that the PVC gets hard and brittle in the cold..and is easily cracked no matter what.

i filled mine with that house insulating spray foam shit, it expands to fill the rail and is solid as hell, plus can flex a bit with the pvc like a cushion, havent had any problems.

the stuff i used was "'great stuff'insulating foam sealant" and you can get it at any hardware store or home depot, or marine supply place (much more expensive here id imagine) it expands to like 4x its size, so if you use like 2" diameter pipe, stand it up, spray a bunch down the top so its filled, lay it down so the foam doesnt settle to the bottom, and wait like a few hours, the pipe will be solidly filled with this cushony but firm foam. you can still screw/drill into it, and it helps the pipe last.

you silly kids you dont know how to make pvc rails. listen. cut a one inch thick straight crack all the way down the rail with an electric saw. You really need to saw it twice so you get a big strip or pvc that comes off. After that hammer the pipe down on a 2 by 4 so that the sides are strattling the board. you dont need screws and it cant break because all the pressure is on the board, but you are still sliding on pvc. then just design your own stand to hold up the 2 by 4 and your good.

my dad is a general contrator so we always have that shit layin around. im not really sure how much.

i think about a can would do a 15' rail up to 3 or 4 inches in diameter, but 4 is prolly pushin it. you dont have to fill the whole thing totally, jsut enough to support it, like bracing.

just looked it up: a 12oz can is 7.50 online. it seems that it ranges from 6-18 bucks online, depending on the insulation values. since you dont care, get the cheapest shit you can find

You obviously don't know how to make a pvc rail. If you did then that wouldn't have happened. You have to drill a hole through the top big enough for the screw head to fit through... then a smaller pilot hole below that... then you slip the screw down in and attach the pvc to a 2x4 beneath. you'd have no chance of catching the screw that way. (theres a pic of mine in my profile under 'homemade' or something).

and for how much PVC costs... and it lasted you a few years?? are you joking? sounds like a good deal to me. Plus it slides fast as shit so it prepares you for anything.

I think PVC is the best idea for a backyard rail.

yeah man at the sweet home depot, the pvc is real cheap so i wouldn't think it's that bad. but now, dang. no more pvc rails.

yeah thats pretty bad try epoxying it well the one with the hole in it

just so you know the hole looks deeper in person i saw them this morning

you clearly didnt make the rail right, you have to drill a hole in the side of the pvc then sink the screw threw the hole so there is no screw, just holes

haha funny that's exactly how I made it. Seriously It's like you wrote out those instructions before and I followed them exactly Maybee you should read next time. the rail cracked so the screw was sticking up above it

yeah, dont make rails from pvc. its bad for the enviorment. and then were gonna have global warming and die.

You made the rail totally wrong. The screws shouldn't be in a place where they will be perpendicular to your skis.

i did

and i have had worse than that and i fixed it

it took me ten minutes and half a stick of p-tex and its fine now

it was even at the edge and its fine, the p-tex didnt even fall out at the next rail jam that i went to

^yeah good idea

also if you live in VT you can go to Mac Steel in Rutland and they have a ton of that shit and i think old urban hand rails too
