Does Whistler have hope?

Hey guys, here is my question, I'm going to whistler (out west for that matter) for the first time ever to ski... and I'm going Feb 19... I've booked my plane ticket and everything. I'm from ottawa... so take that into account...

my question is... does the weather out there have hope to pick up and make a decent trip for myself? or will this be a letdown? I've been looking forward for this for a while... I don't even care about park that much because my mountain has a pretty sick park... I just wanted to ski pow for the first time.

Anyways, post thoughts here... experiences, etc..

thanks.

whistler in general is sick regardless of weather, and as long as there is skiing it is garaunteed to be better than any ontario/quebec skiing. the park is obviously sick, but you say you arent lookin forward to that so much. anyways, im sure itll be fuckin sick just rippin around and skiing in the bowls even if its mostly skied out and very little snow. hopefully they get a dump before you go out tho.

You booked for a good time. If you come and it's not amazing it's not your fault. Just cross your fingers.

thats crazy, im flying out on the 19th too!

my roomate has a chalet there so i got lucky and can stay with him. He says even with this shitty conditions, theres still going to be some good skiing, you'll just have to stay closer to the peaks

pretty unfortunate timing but fuck it, beats Blue Mountain any day!

Right now the weather in BC is absolutley horrible! But I could see it shaping up for mid febuary for sure. Im sure it will be fine.

hmm...actually whistler is not having a good year, and it's been raining there,

your best bet is kelowna, big white, or even kicking horse resort, although kickinghorse is pretty tough stuff.

big white is having a stellar year!!! and it's got an insane park this year.

Yeah thats what I've heard. I gotta get out there. I have family in vancouver... and all over the place out west, so I should definately look into that.

yea I am flying out on feb 24th for 8 days...i am praying for snow. if you see a 25 year old with yellow volkl vertigos in the park tossing backflips and fucking up on rails its probably me.

The problem you're gonna have is getting to the peaks though, those chairs only open when conditions are safe and they are FAR from that the last couple of days, you still have a while though and all it takes is one of those big dumps and it's killer

It is an el nino year which generally screws the nothwest and favors the southwest. In la nina years the northwest gets the favorable weather pattern and jet stream arrangements and the southwest gets screwed. This is because of the large low pressure system that stays set up in the west pacific near the phillipines. This year it is the opposite however and that low pressure system sets up off the coast of peru in the east pacific, hence the el nino. 2 out of 5 years are generally either el nino or las nina seasons. The others are called la nadas. So, 4 out of 5 years should be fine in the Northwest, but this is not going to be one. This year the SST (sea surface temps) which can determine the degree of these is showing a pretty strong el nino. It may continue to suck for the whole winter in Whister. For those that have not been there for 5 years, this may be your first really bad winter.
