Yeah, that's perfectly alright. The way i see it, there's nothing wrong with classifying music. The problem starts when people judge bands just because of the type of music they play. Sum 41 is not punk (at least not anymore), but they're probably my favorite band! Steve Jocz rules!

i think that in the event they werent' on MTV everyone would consider them punk. how is it any different if people know of them. i'll always consider MXPX punk even if they get past MTV 2 and onto MTV. the classification shouldn't change on how popular they are...

I think anyone can like whatever they like. However, I think that if more people were exposed to more music they would deinitly not like them. I hate the way people just take what they get and dont try to look deeper.I mean, if you like sum 41 im quite sure there are other, less known, bands you'd like better. Mainstream music is not the cream of the crop, it's the cream of the crap.

Ok, responding to some message up above that i don't feel like quoting, Sum 41 is not 'riding the punk bandwagon' because they don't call themselves punk. They just do want they want and if people feel like labeling them as punk that's not their fault. and Sum 41 is DEFINITELY not pop, i'd call them either post-punk or even hard/alt rock. It's kinda weird, it's really hard to classify their music.

Lagwagon, think about it. Punk is a type of music. Sure, there is a lifestyle associated with some of it. However, not having the lifestyle or believing in 'everything punk' or having punk beliefs can't change the music you play.

If someone plays me some music and asks what genre I think it is, I'm not going to ask what the backstory on the band is. The genre is contained in the music not how long the bassist's mohawk is or how many stupid anarchy pins and patches are on the lead singer's tatered leather jacket. Stop kidding yourself.

Also, you say that essentially when a band gets played on comercial radio its no longer punk. Sucessful bands make it on to the radio. True, some bands make the hard decision of refusing. But if they are signed to a label, usually the label puts them on anyway. Typically, crappy or unsuccessful bands don't make it onto the radio. Read into that however you want. Typically, a lot of punk does suck, its very easy to play and doesn't take a lot of talent. Not saying there aren't some good punk bands out there, but the majority lack talent.

Stop thinking you're the king all-knower of punk and think about things logically.

Yah i agree with whoever said the sum 41 isnt punk but it dosent matter. personally i really dont like them, but who cares? if other ppl do then so be it, let them listen to it. i prefer hard punk/ska but its all good. keep on rokin. o and if anyone wants to talk punk, just send me a message.
