Does ESPN get paid per time they say "Shaun White"

I watched the live feed all day yesterday from the UK, had some mates around and watched the Big Air etc till about 4am; totally amazing.

What was ridiculously annoying though was the amount of times Shaun White was shown, advertised, talked about etc, I mean after every advert break they had a short feature on him; the superpipe was pretty much called the "Shaun White Superpipe" and they never even mentioned any other superpipe boarder competitors.

Sure, he's the top guy in the sport, and a US Olympic team guy; but it was just so much overkill and diminished the simply amazing tricks that everyone was throwing down in Ski Big Air and Moto Best Trick.

I mean Bobby stomps one of the besttricks I've ever seen; abd the announcers say "and shaun White hasn't even started yet" or something.

It was just stupid and annoying; but at least ESPN like him because I've heard none of the other boarder competitors do (I have no facts to base this on but I don't care).

i agree with everything you just said. i almost wanted to mute my tv after TJ threw the 1660 and they said "and shaun white hasnt even gone yet." kind of disrespectful if u ask me but i wouldnt expect anything less from ESPN.
 
x games are cool to watch and enjoy becuase it is the biggest thing in our sport but at the same time it is the most enoying, coperate bullshit i have ever seen and is a terrible reprisintation of our tru sports, but i must say x games does give alot more air time and shit to skiers than most do, like dew which is nice and even the woman more and more every year which is good. overall i think x games is good for the sport
 
Totally agree, the constant mentioning the overhyped ginger is actually far more annoying than pro bowl or college basket being hyped up..
 
i strongly agree. i was getting pretty irritated with it yesterday. did anyone see the clip of him slamming his head in the pipe?? his helmet flew off and everything. as much as i dislike the guy i still felt bad for him because i think thats going to seriously fuck with his confidence.
 
It's all about TV ratings and to the masses Shawn White gets ratings, most of the general public doesnt know who the other riders are, they just know Shawn White.

Its like the New York Yankees, ESPN talks about them and Boston all the time, thats because The Pittsburgh Pirates and Kansas City Royals are not going to get the same ratings as the other big boys.
 
This shit also has something to do with american culture where the winner takes it all, and everybody else can fuck off..... the hype the shit out of one american in every sport, shawn white, levi lavallee, simon d.... everybody else is just there to fill in the blanks, even the other americans...... dont get me wrong, I love the way espn can put on a show.... you dont have that over here in europe, but sometimes they just overdo shit.........
 
yeah i have noticed espn's announcers really ruin things for me when its a sport espn does not normally broadcast like world cup soccer and the xgames and stuff. they either dont know what they are talking about , or they are just downright annoying to listen to.

yeah even after tjs dub cork 1620 and bobby's misty 1440, was pretty pissed that they threw shaun whites name in there. I dont think they realize what just happened.
 
the xgames are run by espn. espn wants viewers. to the random joe, shaun white is snowboarding. therefore the more they hype shaun white, the more viewers they get. you may notice snowboarding was last last night, WHY? so that viewers would tune in early not realizing that, watch all the events, just waiting for the flying tomato to be on.
 
shaun white frustrates the hell out of me. everytime someone stomped a trick, the announcers would say shaun white could do it better, or 'oh if he just threw that then what's shaun white gonna do?' STOP SAYING SHAUN WHITE. I wish that practice run took him out for the season so i wouldnt hear his name 500 times in one week
 
they probably got paid as much for every time they referred to "the dumont" in the high air joke event despite the fact that he was never a factor in it. just sayin'
 
Both skiing and snowboarding will be better once he is out and retired or whatever. Not being rude at all, but seriously--he is the symbol of the corporate takeover of action sports.
 
yeah im not sure not being and insider in the snowboarding community but you definitely get the feel that it is killing the core of snowboarding as an action sport and making it into a all hailing of shaun white, while the other atheletes are disregarded.

I hate shauwn wigga. And when I heard he wanted everyone to call him the animal, it was over, everytime I hear someone talk about him, how he is so good, how good he looks, blah blah blah, I just want to f*ck them people over.. arggghhhhhh! I hate him.
 
Completely agree. Shit like this is getting ridiculous these days and for the people who actually care about the sports involved, it kinda ruins the experience. Sadly, though, the same thing will happen once skiing halfpipe gets in the Olympics and blows up on the mainstream level. Like, if Dumont wins the gold, you'll hear his name about 1200 times at every televised snowsports event he's in. Now, doesn't that make you cringe...
 
Like Shaun White or Simon Dumont or not, you guys will have to come to grips with the fact that the publicity/sponsors that they are getting is good for our sport. The more people get involved in our sport, the bigger the market is for it--which translates to bigger events, more prize money, more sponsors and cooler shit to help us shred with. There was over 80,000 people in attendence at the X Games, not to mention all the folks that tuned in on TV or the internet (and oh yeah, we're still talking about it). If all the hype over either of these two contributes to the growth and success of our sport, if it gets even one kid out there on skis or a snowboard to shred, how could you not be stoked?
 
i just loved how after he hit his had he went on his knees pulled off his gator and then flung his hair back it was so god damn dramatic, espn does suck his dick, it was very aggravating
 
it happened in every event except other athletes. the 3 main people at x were shaun white, simon dumont, and levi lavelle.i was watching snowmobile shoot out and every 2 minutes"dumont gettin ready for high air" its ridiculous they made a bigger deal about shaun white than anything. while nate holland got a 5 peat, tj and bobby and jossi threw down so hard, and the moore brothers threw down on the snowmobiles, espn only cared that white,dumont and lavalle were at x games
