What up NS,

Im thinkin about moving to mammoth this winter to work there and ski. I just got word that my application went through and I have a pending work offer.

So, I thought i would ask if anyone here works there or hangs out there. Hows the environment/overall vibe? and do you like it there?

Thanks

mammoth is sweet to work at in my opinion

i was a ski instructor there last year, and will probably continue working there again this year as a holiday instructor at least

all my supervisors were pretty laid back, but its still a job so you need to have you s*** together

but no one is like super up tight for the most part, and all my co-workers were prety chill

in terms of the mountain, you can't really ask for a better place... mammoth kills it in the park scene no doubt, and i think i skied more powder days then any type of ski day last year

weather outlook for the mt should be about average or slightly above this season, despite la nina

also since mammoth is the highest resort in CA, when it's raining in tahoe it's often puking snow at mamm

hope this helps you, pm for any questions

Buy a costco pass, head down in october, find a job at a restaurant and find a place with some chillers. You can always use the mountain job as back up. You will make better money, ski more and meet cooler people. If you do end up working for the mountain don't stay in employee housing, they'll sneak into your closet while your at work and steel all your dope.

Thanks for the words guys. +k to both of you.

The only reason I would want to work on the mountain is because of the free season pass and the discounts i can get when buying new gear.(need a ton of stuff this year)

mammoth has a great vibe and a really cool skiing scene. the people tend to be super down to earth and cool, but your gonna have to deal with the orange county and Los Angeles gapers pretty often. other than that there really are no downsides. I highly recommend it.

after college i want to go live near mammoth for awhile for skiing, kind of legal weed, but does anyone who lives in this area know how long it is to drive to the coast and beaches. kind of an avid surfer

I've been a snow cat opp at mammoth for the last 10 years. The mtn is fairly nice to work for. The pay is good vs other mtns. You can get nice emp housing depending hon how much you want to spend. Or there are a lot of spots open to rent this year in town. The season is one of the longest in north america and we get amazing amounts of snow almost every year.

OP - what job did they give you an offer for?

Mammoth is sick. Park is obviously dope, but the entire mountain is great. The town is also surrounded by great bc terrain. The town is a bit remote. There are tons of open rooms/apartments/condos in town, especially if you get here before the season starts. It's about 5 hours to the beach in socal and that always makes a nice getaway from winter.

From my experience working for Mammoth is dope but it really depends on who you're workin for.....what job did they offer you?

You are moving out from the east coast past utah, past colorado past JACKSON HOLE to ride Mammoth? Don't get me wrong Mammoth rules by why not work at a resort in tahoe if you're so dead set on california?

I had a great experience last season working for mammoth. If you are planning on staying then remember that when canyon lodge closes you will most likely be laid off.

Mammoth has a better park than any other resort in Tahoe. Squaw, Alpine, and Kirkwood might be better places as far as terrain goes, but just barely. Mammoth is my personal favorite ski area in California.

Don't get me wrong, mammoth rules but I feel like all these east coast kids just wanna live in keystone, breck, mammoth or park city and they should explore their options.

I like mammoth because that is the mountain that hired me. Getting someone to listen to a kid tell them they will work hard isnt too easy. Especially if your moving from Ct. I got a job as a rental shop cashier. Its shit work but will give me a pass, and hopefully enough money for rent.

Im still working out my financial situation. hopefully it works out.

Thanks for anyone whos given an imput.

Canyon is the main lodge right? Thats the lodge i will be at, and my boss said that the hard working people are the ones they ask to stay on through the summer. But if i choose to stay, i have restaurant experience, and musical skill so i could bum around doing that once the mountain closes

canyon is not the main lodge. canyon is the second largest lodge. it opens a bit later in the season and closes a bit earlier

Okay, I see what you mean. See I notice everyone wants to live in Summit County and Park City, but not as much Mammoth. It seems like NS rides the cock of CO and the cock of OR in the summer. That is it. Haha

Canyon and Main are different lodges. They're both pretty busy.

Really though, think about using your mountain job and employee housing as a back up. Main lodge rentals means you will be working during the day and if it's your only job you're gonna be doing a lot of it. They don't pay shit compared to how expensive living in mammoth is, even if you're "bumming". If you start looking at restaurant jobs as soon as you get there and search hard you will probably be able to find one. Then find a room with alright rent and you're in, just need a season pass, I dunno if costco still has em for 600/800 but that's an alright deal and well worth being able to ride any day you want. I don't know if you smoke cannabis but employee housing is super harsh on that as well as underage partying, if you are in the below 21 crowd. Getting kicked out of your house and losing a job because of it would be a downer in the middle of your season.

You'll have fun no matter what though! Good luck man

Mammoth really isn't that expensive to live in, not like it was say 5 years ago. I hail from so. cal, but rent is cheaper up here in Mammoth than it was in so. cal. I worked for a property management company up here and they were renting 3bedroom houses/condos for about 1200 a month that were in decent locations. It could be hard living on your own, but if you don’t mind roommates than you will be able to find a place to live fairly cheaply you just might need to spend some time looking for it (and if all else fails there’s always the ghetto haha) Food expenses are average, the only real kicker is gas, but since the town has free public transportation and is only 4 square miles you really do not end up driving that much if at all. You will have to deal with gapers on the weekends which can be annoying, but during the week the town and the mountain are usually dead. I really feel that working for the mountain in many ways is the beast option because of the free pass, because unless you are an MVP member or a college student a season pass is a very large chunk of change (as far as I know Costco isn’t doing the pass deal anymore). Also when you work for the mountain you know you are going to have sold work for at least 5 months. If your not making enough then supplement your income with a restaurant job etc, that’s what some of my friends did last winter.

I like the vibe in this town, the locals are very laid back, a lot different than where I grew up. I like that there is practically zero mountain driving. I do not know why some people are haters on this place. I agree that terrain wise squaw and alpine are more technical, but mammoth is a big, fun, enjoyable place.

I hope everything works out for you!
