So to clear things up, this doc is one of the best orthopedic surgeons in the area so I trust his opinion. He told me there were esentially two types of meniscus tears, one in which there is a "flap" of the meniscus and they can just cut it off and be walking in a few days, or it can be a tear which they repair it and the recovery is much longer. I had surgery last Wednesday and when he cut it open he ended up doing the latter repair, which has a recovery time of 6 weeks on crutches, but in turn it saves more of my meniscus for 40 years down the line. Anyways he suggested that I don't ski until march but we will see how my recovery goes.
I literally could not walk at all after I tore it, so I knew it was pretty bad. Some people have had less serious meniscus tears and been able to go without surgery at all, so it's really situational apparently. Anyways I have some pictures of the surgery scope so I can post them later.
