Do your guys’ mountains have “park passes”

I had heard that back in the day places like Brighton had a “park pass” where you would take a quiz online and then pay like 15$ and you could then get access to the park.. does this still exist anywhere or did it even really work out?

To me it sounds like a great idea, better built park and less injuries due to gapers flying mach 5 over the lips

it's a fine idea in theory but i didn't like them in practice. i like going to new mountains and cruising through the park if and whenever i feel like it. sitting around and waiting for a class or whatever to start was a PITA and i'd usually just say fuck it and ski elsewhere

didn't mind the fees since they were nominal and hopefully went straight to park funding

Never had to deal with them but I think a mtn in Quebec has it and it’s rfid so you can’t get into the park unless you pay for it. I don’t think most people would pay for it like a tourist or something

In theory I'd be 100% down to pay $5-$15 for a year of park access if it meant

a) the people in the park are at least a little bit interested in actually riding park and

b) the money went in to making the park a little better.

But none of the mountains around me do it anymore so it must have been more trouble than it's worth to them.

Fernie still does that last I checked. They only have a small rail park though since RCR does not build jumps. Its easy enough to get in the park without having the pass and there usually isnt anyone checking so its kind of a pointless money grab, although no one goes to Fernie to ride park unless you are a local. Its lame and a waste of money IMO.

Every mtn is different, and it works better at some than others, but in general it really doesn't work well.

It realy sucks when you check put a new mtn for the day that has park pass.

It was a cool idea that just didn't work. The best thing is having two parks of varying ability next to each other. Or having a big and small line all the way if your only park. At the end of the day people who want to do something stupid will do something stupid.

Park pass is annoying because of the hassle to get it, but some kind of gatekeeping can be nice. When the park is full of kids who have to hike up the lips because they are unable to pizza fast enough to get speed to roll over them.... yeah would be nice for someone at the top to tell them to ski somewhere else until they are ready.

my park used to but if you where cheap you could show them he paper and not pay the 5 bucks but the 5 bucks went towards park crew

Holy fuck big sky's swifty park was jerry central today. At the end of the day some idiot had somehow hurt themselves on a flat tube bad enough that they laid there for 40+ minutes (no idea when they first fell. A bunch of us park skiers had gathered at the top waiting for the rail to clear of this moron and his giant family. You could tell the ski patrollers were getting sick of his shit, he prolly wasn't even hurt that bad. I think having a park pass would prevent this from happening a lot more. I don't like the idea of it costing money. Winter Park's Dark Territory requires you watch a 20 minute video and fill out a waiver saying you understand park etiquette and then you get a free card. If they had some sort of test where, if you know already and are just new to the mountain, it might be even better to just take a quick test to prove you know what's good and that'd be perfect imo.

Honestly that would work perfectly as well. People just don't understand park etiquette at all and don't realize what can really happen if you do get hurt, cut someone off, sit in the landing, etc. I feel like putting some sort of pass would also bring tons of safety for the resort as well. It would be a lot harder to sue if you watched a video and then sign a freakin waver....more security is freakin needed. Even if you are new to the mountain, just have a QR code at the ticket office that you can watch in the parking lot or on the lift ride up.

They should have an RFID gates the top of parks. Only way to get a pass is to show the park crew your Vishnu’s and 4xl pants. If they decline you you must suffer for a year until you are given the chance to prove yourself once again.

Wait that’s basically just a cult

Please correct me if I'm way off, but could the answer be more progressive parks? Like baby lips off in one area JUST FOR jerry to nepolean dynamite some sick air so they don't be pre-occupied on features that are over their heads?

The allure of skiing to many is to go fast and catch air, even if you barely have the pizza down. Allowing beginners to in a controlled environment seems like a more sustainable approach than making hoops that peeps have to jump through. The more barriers there are to skiing park, the less popular park skiing will be, and she's hurtin rn.

People will still hit the biggest park and side jump everything.

But flowy parks with snow features can hit for everyone.

Also stoked to see all the baby parks these days. Honestly me and my buddy had fun riding the baby park at northstar.

This one is special for you! [tag=104058]@theabortionator[/tag] !

Yeah progression parks are great! But they have to be placed right. Big Sky's are literally on the back side of the mountain with no indication until youre close. The big park is directly beneith the lift that services the base area so everybody goes over it and sees it first ride of the day

Schweitzer has had one as long as I can remember. Works great, theres ways around it and if you know how to do that you know how not to be an idiot in the park. They only check it on weekends too and it just keeps the goons out. Theres a smaller park just next to it that you dont have to have a park pass to go in.

Had a roomate that had his park pass pulled at Blue Mtn for being a fucking jackass in the park. Cant do this without park passes.

Le Relais in Quebec city put a pay park after I left. It was highly requested by the riders. People loved it, they hired a few extra rangers, security and had a but more budget for bigger features. They reported a drop in injuries and collisions in the park fell to 0. But Karens are always gonna be around because they want their 5 year old kid side hitting the XL knuckles when the bunny hill was too hard.

god damn my hill needs one, we're already deep in the rfid hole so whats one more gate to keep the pissy families up from their Chicago suburb off of the knuckles of our jumps

I'm 100% in favor of mandatory gap jumps into the top of the park

I see pictures of this in euro resorts but I have never seen it in person. The park at bogus basin is right under the main lift so people that don't know what they're doing get hurt pretty often. I think a park pass would really help keep randos safe and protect the resort from lawsuits

Has anyone's local tried this? How'd it work?

Bristol mountain in NY did this in the late season one year where there only real jump was a little gap jump over a ditch and dirt patch. Didn’t work they closed the park before the end of the day

its mont relais, the reason they have it is because its the only big jumps in quebec and its also where guys like abm practice

I really think more mountains should do them for their large parks. Keep small parks and flow parks open for everyone, and have the larger stuff be regulated by a park pass to keep the people who ski 5 times a year off of the sweet jumps in front of the scary rails

There was a big trend of this 10 or so years back a lot of places were park pass. It didn't seem like it worked as well as people hoped it would at most places and so their was a heavy decrease in them.

Idk, it's a rough issue and one with really no perfect sollution. I just don't see how it would be that much different now.

But as has been mentioned every mtn is different to some extent.

Back in the day Camelback in PA used to have a park pass. It was annoying to get the pass for just going on a day trip to the mountain but it seemed to help. Unless it was just a slow day anyway.

no but our park is filled with gapers who also make the rope stop every 5 minutes on weekends

that's about as big of a jump we can build in NC super lucky to have a great park with night skiing.

That's great! I filmed a guy from NC doing a real lap at Mt Bachelor once. Good skiers from NC!

App ski here in NC has the best jumps in the area thanks to their park pass

What makes it "thanks to the park pass". App looks like they have a pretty sick park consistently but there are mountains that have bigger parks with no park pass, and way shittier parks with park pass.

I get that a park pass could help some places but decent size jumps just comes down to what the management is comfotable with, who's building the park, snowmaking budget, etc.

I’m good friends with the owner’s son and he says it’s because the park pass keeps people that shouldn’t be in the park from coming in and getting hurt making the owner allow bigger jumps.

Our hills park is on a rope and they used to sell a cheaper ticket that only gave you acces to the rope tows. Dont have it anymore
