Do I need poles?

Currently learning how to ski without poles but moving forward in lift lines are a bitch. I'm doing that roller skate push but sometimes lines are too crowded. Do I need poles or should I keep learning without them? If I need poles, can I get some recommendations? Thanks

pretty much depends on how comfortable you are when you are skiing. My poles hadn't shipped for my fisrt day out, but i always use poles so i looked like a fucking dingus. if you feel confident without them though then you shouldnt use em

if youre literally learning to ski, leave em if you want

if you are anywhere between novice and "very good," USE THEM. it will make your skiing form much better and then if you want you can drop them later once youve internalized good technique

you'll still look like a goof slipping around in the lift line like a 5 year old, but that's your prerogative, right?

as you can probably guess, id suggest getting poles.. you don't need anything fancy, just get the cheapest ones that you don't mind holding

Use them, I don't know if you really care but you will look like a goober with no poles unless you are in the park. You don't even have to use them except to push if you still want to work on form without them. Plus they are cheap. I would definitely get them.

I definitely look like a goof in the lift lines but screw the haters. I'm gonna go ahead and order some outlet poles off backcountry but in the mean time I'm gonna work on my form. Now that I'm getting poles though, I have to learn that armpit tuck....jk

Poles are pretty controversial because some think its a style thing, HOWEVER

If you really are just starting to learn, you should ski with poles. It helps your body stay forward thus giving you more control underfoot. They also prevent the back seat lazy hands I see all the time. The lazy hands reinforce improper technique and are IMO the sign of a bad skier. Lazy hands make me cringe.

For me it's a constant battle between wanting to look steezy and being judged by the 49 year old men who ski the sides of the park. (Sarcasm)

Without poles I feel like I can balance more on rails, but it's a personal preference.

learn with poles, you'll thank us later when you have proper skills and techniques built, and aren't all over the place cuz you wanna ski like bdog.

I think poles are remind me to keep my hands in front and consequently puts my whole body in a good proper position. But skiing with out poles is fun.

like what was mentioned above, no poles helps a ton with your balance and style. youd be surprised how much poles aid balance. i skid with no poles for a month or two, but then kind of got reamed out and switched back. now skiing with poles i feel unstopable lol. as for lift lines, just slide your skis forward and back usually helps. or just use the backward pizza technique, or the nose butter hop technique which is my favorite.

For me I like the poles for balance. Took 1 run with poles the next with no poles. Second time I wiped out 2-3 times. I like my poles. Unless I'm on a two rope. Then they get in the way.

if youre in the park, i say its up to you. If you arent in the park, then definitely use poles unless you are trying to be a gaper
