digital video cameras

Im getting a digital video camera for my b-day but i really dont know what makes one better than another. i think i can only spend under $500. Does anyone know a really good one for shooting ski footage/putting it on my comp/and editing it?? i know i want one that is minidv bt i dont really know what that is. i just heard its good if u want to put it on ur comp. any input is appreciated

anyway, don't mess around with the dvd cams, but get an easy to use camera. Sonys are super simple if you wanna do some computer editing.
