Difference between NS and average Olympic audience

Your average Joe who may or may not have spent several thousand dollars for his family to ski at Breckenridge is not familiar with any of these athlete's names. A month ago, Jossi Wells, David Wise, Gus Kenworthy, Henrik Harlaut, Torin Yater Wallace, etc. would not ring any bells. What he does recognize is the American flag. He is going to root for Team USA. Obviously. And there is nothing wrong with that. Now I don't know exactly what the demographics of Newschoolers are, but I'm going to go ahead and assume that a very slight majority of the users are Americans (this doesn't really have an effect on my point if I'm wrong). However, instead of national support, it seems like NSers want their favorite athletes to succeed (this goes for any country). As an American myself, I am ecstatic that Team USA swept the very first slopestyle event. However, as a NSer, I feel like Henrik Harlaut deserved better than sixth place. The same goes for halfpipe. Way to represent David Wise. I'm glad you're taking home gold. However, I chose to post Jossi Wells video to my Facebook wall, because that's what I want to show my freeski-oblivious friends. I believe Wells' run was more aesthetically pleasing than Wise's, so I wish he won (or at least medaled).

TL;DR The average Olympic viewer wants what is best for their country, whereas the average NSer wants what is best for the ski community.

interesting point of view, i know for one i was rooting for henshaw to win gold cause of national pride but once he didn't stomp his first run i didn't really care who won, skiing doesn't have a "shaun white" of competition so for that i was stoked to whoever won, and was even more stoked after joss won as an Australian i always love a good underdog story and joss was the biggest underdog coming into the olympics.

Kinda relevant: when I was watching slopestyle I convinced my parents to watch so I could show them the sport I was obsessed with. So throughout the runs I would call out the names of the tricks before the announcers to demonstrate to my parents that ik what im talking about. So nick geopper does the screamin seamen dub and I say screamin seamen double and my mom gives me a weird look cuz the announcer calls it a genie grab haha. So my mom thought I just randomly yelled "screamin semen" haha

This thread is on point! sure i want canada to win but i was way more excited and nervous when jossi or henrik dropped

I was doing the same thing with my friends for slopestyle finals. I can't remember who did a screamin seamen dub, but I called it and they were like, "Dude. You're making shit up."

I realize that the general public may not be interested to know that so-and-so did a switch 1260 with a mute grab, but if nothing else, an announcer who knows what he is talking about and calls the tricks throughout the run will excite a viewer and will let them know when an athlete did something "good." It just seems like: *awkward silence* "He holds the grab throughout that big trick." *awkward silence* "Oh! He had a nice landing on that one!" *awkward silence* "What a spectacular run for Joss Christenson!"

Fuck that, it's the Olympics, one of the few times where disgusting displays of patriotism are accepted without question. NS spends so much time talking about how much better the u.s. is than any other country, and trying to prove that it is objectively true. Now is your chance to show all that patriotism off without having to risk looking like a moron.

If you're American, you should root for American skiers. If you don't, well...maybe you're a good for nothing commie who doesn't appreciate freedom and should get the hell out.

true i was thinking about this a lot recently. usually when i watch the olympics i route for our fools whereas with slope and pipe i was routing for the skiers i was hyped on which of course includes americans but is definitely a bit more all over the map.

Whoa, bro. Whoa. Don't let the veil of the internet hide your civility.

As to your comment... let me get this straight. Maybe I'm practicing my freedom to be a communist, but because I don't appreciate freedom (which apparently would be disgusting if I did), I should leave the country that allows me to freely embrace my communist ideals. And because I'm an American, I should conform to what other Americans are doing by rooting for Americans. Sounds like... I don't know... communism?

As a UK skier, I think it was a lot easier to root for my favourites, rather than any of the GB competitors, mainly because I didn't know anything about them. Having said that, it was still good as a Brit to see James Woods place a pretty solid run in the slopestyle.

I think that, as a human, it's great to see people from your country do well in anything, but as a NSer, you've got a better appreciation for the other nations, and what their athletes are doing well. Also bear in mind that not many of the other people watching the olympics are gonna have seen any of HH's edits or anything, they're just going on the commentary.

I am a proud Canadian and I am stoked to see Gus nick and joss on the slope podium, they are a good representation of skiing. However I would have been a bit more stoked to see ABM on the podium.

Sort of related I suppose, but I had an epiphany while watching ice skating wondering whether or not bobsled/ice skating/other fans of other sports hate the commentators as much as NS hates the slopestyle commentators. What if a "double twizzle" is not the actual move, sort of like calling a 16 a 1080?

Basically, do the commentators suck throughout all the sports? We just only notice when slopestyle tricks are called wrong because we don't know ice skating. Somewhere, some ice skating forum is making fun of their announcers getting tricks wrong.

That's an interesting take. However, ice skating has a long-established tradition in the Olympics and more people have done ice skating than freestyle skiing. Errbody got their lingo-- my knit crazy mom included.

I think the biggest point is that we have history going into it that is non-country based. So we're all rooting for our favorite athletes, favorite style, or who we believe 'took the day'.

I agree though, I want Canada to win because I like my country, but in the same respect Im cheering for the athletes that I really believe in for wahtever reason.
