Did you guys know that ladies prefer smaller jumps in slope comps?

I just don't understand how they think anyone is ever going to take women's skiing seriously if they have smaller jumps.
 
Men started with smaller jumps. It's all about progression and basically what they are saying is that woman are too scared to try their best tricks on a slopestyle course that caters to men. I think it would be awesome to see separate courses because we will see woman trying new tricks and pushing their side of the sport. Men and woman progress at different speeds so it really doesn't make sense to have one course.

My only problem is that I feel like it would be hard for resorts to find room for two courses or to be able to afford building two courses. Obviously there are ways around this like hosting the same event just at different resorts for men and woman. Or having the mens comp one week then cutting the course down and making it smaller for the woman and hosting their event the next week. I'm interested to see if this survey changes things, I hope sometime in the early future I can watch a woman's slopestyle event on a course that is made specifically for woman.

And men didn't "start" with smaller jumps - resorts did. The resorts in which both Sarah and Kristi of the main girls were active as well, so I don't understand this backwards logic of the questionnaire asnwers.
 
it took women 5 years to do a 270 onto an urban rail...

it took women over 8 years to do a switch 1080...

i think it's time to stop coming up with excuses, ladies. we all know your knees suck but that's no reason to bitch out.
 
I haven't seen any of those films, I honestly don't even know what they are. I see what you mean by resorts staring with smaller jumps but the jumps progressed as men got better. There are and always have been far more men than woman in the sport, so progression will obviously be quicker for men. I just personally think if woman need a smaller course to progress on in comps, why not give it to them?
 
Women's joints are naturally more capable of moving through a fuller range of motions therefore the do have an advantage whilst in the air

It shouldn't matter that fewer women have been in action sports as a whole for a long time, many women just haven't been pushing themselves on the same level as guys from Day One as there hasn't been much competition - not the fault of any jumps or their sizes.

Looking at the Nine Queens just now, the jump was TOO SMALL for the girls! The tricks thrown this year were plentiful, quite stylish and there were a lot more unknowns that had amazing tricks, but the size of that jump seemed limiting to them, really. It would be fun to see which pros pictured this idea.

Also, remember than in the survey that Leskinen did, it was for both skiers and snowboarders if I recall correctly, with that one chick from Amped who isn't even doing comps anymore weighing in here opinion, wanting to separate not only women and men's courses but also skiers and boarders...

 
I totally agree with krist's points on safety and progression, but if you want equal prize purses for equal pay and equal work, its difficult to ask for smaller jumps as well... Organizers are already overlooking the varying degree of qualifiers. I also think its wrong to ask a competitor not to progress the sport and hit smaller jumps because some of her competitors aren't as comfortable on them. Events like nine queens are bomb. The sport needs more grass-root competitions like that for females. This is exactly where this article relates. But on the main stage as well? The two current pushes in women's freeskiing are counter intuitive and conflicting ideologies in my opinion. Put a small option next to each jump and leave it at that. The female competitors are the ones choosing to hit the bigger jumps instead and I don't particularly see that as a bad thing.
 
Competition is exactly it I think. The gap between male and female ski racers is considerably smaller than that between male and female freeskiers. And what do you know? The numbers of men and women participants are much closer.
 
Dont you think the Nine Queens jump was made to the specs the girls wanted tho? Sure they were going down the landing a bit but that happens to every jump. They couldve 12d if they wanted i think
 
i'm honestly a bit surprised by this. i snowboard, not ski, and i've never read any interview or comment from any of the girls asking for separate courses. i don't think many of the girls in ski slopestyle have either? in fact, i believe last year at xgames they were given the option to take one jump out of the women's course, and the athletes all said no. this survey was just looking at jump preferences, it didn't pointedly ask if the women would want to compete on separate courses. it'd be interesting to see the responses to that question specifically. maybe this is selfish, but i really hope they don't downsize.
 
Weren't most girls pushing for gender equality and equal prize money and all that? Now your saying these competitions are too dangerous for girls and there should be a modified course for them? Seems to me that if girls are competing at that top level they should train on 60-80 foot jumps in preparation for competitions instead of asking for smaller jumps all together.
 
didnt ex games courses used to have a smaller jump next to the big ones for women? i seem to recall the announcers saying something about sarah burke having something to do with getting them removed. or am i completely making that up?
 
make them air over the knuckle. all of the tricks women are doing today could be performed off a sharp knuckle to landing transition, no joke
 
Please tell me I'm not the only one who got a chuckle at the guys' preferred jump size being 69 feet.

I've never seen any of that stuff on tv, except gymnastics at the olympics (I do enjoy watching those ladies...), and i'm pretty confident they don't get the same prize money right?
 
haha in the midget segment of wski106, kye and sean petit are like 11 and 13 clearing big ass park jumps. they couldn't have weighed more than 90 lbs.
