Did you come from a ski racing background?

No, I didn't start racing, but I wish I did, regardless of what people may say about racers it does make you into a damn good skier. I have now raced a bit, just at interschool's level.

i used to race on my dads ski team from work. it was just for fun, but i definitely feel that it helped make me a better overall skier

Yerp, raced as a kid, and did 2 years at FIS level doing all 4 disciplines, but my best was Super G.

Gotta say I am so happy I did race it was such a solid base and you can really use so much of the knowledge when hitting big mountain.

The only bad thing is how serious it is. Although I realise it is necessary, but some people really just saw red blue red blue. made me start hate skiing. So quit then found a new love in the deep stuff.

Actually got in racing and moguls latter. Helped so much with technique especially the moguls training. I never competed much as I was competing in slope but it helped massively. Well worth doing.

true. my cousing did racing from age 6-13 i believe. he then did 720s his first year on tips and got them flips down the next season. they just have more control on skis.

Raced couple years of FIS along with USSA obviously. Best event was SL. I miss the "team" aspect (went to a school with a program where the team was close) believe it or not more than anything. Having like-minded people was nice. Eventually though the pressure I put on myself made me dislike it towards the end of my senior year and since I wasnt skiing in college I quit for the time being. I know I will get back into it as a coach at some point. I wouldnt change it for the life of me though despite a sour ending.

Yep. Started racing USSA on the East Coast when I was little. Raced all over the Poconos for the most part until we eventually moved to Colorado. Then I raced a few more years in high school. I was actually pretty good in Slalom and got my points down to the low 20's. This, in spite of ditching practice as often as possible so I could go jump off of stuff.

racing is cool and all, my friend is super good hes like number one in the state i think, but kids who bring racing/racing style into the park is one of my biggest pet peeves

I used to race in my mountains race program. I think I did it up until I was J-4(?) in 4th grade and and stopped because I didn't weigh enough to get any speed on flat courses

I still race on my highschool team , but it's pretty informal (about 40% of the team has skied for 2 seasons and we aren't required to wear race suits)

Yeah, started racing at 4. Went through all the standard kids-level racing and at 11 got put into Far West (USSA division in Tahoe). Did Far West until I was like 15 or 16 and was so unhappy with the sport that I almost quit. Then one ski trip I found FREEZE and ventured into the park. The rest, as they say, is history.

I started skiing when I was about 3-4 years old at the time and learned at Gore Mountain. I did lessons until age 8, then went on to race for the Gore ski team for about three years until I fractured my maxilla and had a few teeth fall out and put back in. After that accident, I skied on my own for a year, then after that season, I discovered freeskiing (although freeskiing at Gore is probably a bad place to start). I've been freeskiing for three years and I still suck, but I've been able to do an Instructor In Training program at my local mountain for the past two years, because I can't be an instructor until age 16, so I have another year left.

I grew up racing but I ended it when I turned 17 due to the more serious direction it was headed to. I did SL, GS, Super GS (or whatever its called in Enlish) and DH.

Im really happy I had parents that took me into the ski racing community, but as mentioned before in this thread it became too serious for my part, and I saw freeskiing as an opportunity to keep skiing in my life.

Started out in ski club in like 5th grade and started racing in highschool and at the same time started to get into park. I wasn't really good with my times cause I would go too fast and fuck up my line. I wish I could have competed in super G or downhill where its more about balls then getting a good line down like in slalom or gs.

yeah, i raced against my dad and brother for the best seat in the couch after a long day of skiing.

Yes, I wasn't the best racer at all, but it helped me learn the basics of skiing fast and being able to react quickly, which truly i think has helped me with freestyle skiing. My kids forsure will start off racing.

Yup up until like 14. I don't remember what the level was but we traveled all around Washington/Oregon for races. It was a blast especially cuz my coaches loved skiing pow so any pow day we would just shred. Turned into freestyle school pretty much some days. Taught me how to three into moguls and my first flips were taught to me by my ski coach

I for got to add that I am still racing in high school, just started my freshman year (last winter). First time in three years.

Well, the first time i went skiing was on a 5th grade ski trip. So, no. I really do wish my family skied because everybody that i know that has raced at some point are great skiers because of it.

I never raced, wasn't the best skier when I start riding park, so I spent a lot of time on that. Wish I had that kind of background though.

I used to race, but never very well. It was always just an excuse to ski as much as possible in the winter. I became a much better skier because of it though, that's for sure.

Yep. I was a j3 and j4. No clue what my handicap was. But I bet I can beet all of those kids in a race now

yes

i think i was like k2?? or something

i wasnt really committed, me and my friend ditched most afternoons to ski the park

raced for one year when I was 6 at sunday river and absolutely hated it. I could not handle all the waiting around in Lange boots. All I wanted to do was hit jumps and tool around the woods. That aside it was extremely beneficial to my skiing.

Nope, I quit after my Junior year in high school. A few of my good friends graduated and I realized that I enjoyed shredding with my friends way more than competing against their times. Also, being in a van for hours and hours every weekend gets old. I have nothing but respect for those who thrive in that lifestyle. I was never that committed.

I was the kid fighting for last place. I fucking hated how bad I was. But training would end at 1:00 and the race team would invade the terrain park with old race skis that we'd taken a blow torch to and turned up the tails. Back then most kids my age who got into free skiing were racing first.

no, i grew up on a snowboard and then made the switch in early high school and now i enjoy both very much. I mostly ski though.

This thread kind of makes me wish I had raced. I only took lessons but I feel like if I had raced I'd have an entirely different perspective on skiing than I do now.

I raced when I was in middle school, then quit in high school, then went back and did USCSA in college. I was never very good, but it made 600 feet of vertical a lot less boring, plus college ski racing is a lot of fun.

yep, raced for 6 yearsalthough it wasn't fun, it made learning in the park so much easier, because my balance was good and i was really comfortable on skis

also its prepared to ski pretty much anything and is the basis for what i know today

fucking brilliant thread! ye ski racing is the shit to become the best allround skier you gotta do a fair bit of racing! i finished racing last year was competing at the highest level in eastern US, doing nationals and shit but ye its fucking boring to. CHASING GATES OR DROPPING CLIFFS urrrm thats an easy decision... Ski X is where its at for racing and what i'm doing now. check out my season edit and see what you recon to the world junior champs ski X course. it was achually pretty gnar!https://www.newschoolers.com/watch/640011.0/Sam-Allen---Season-Edit?t=6
