And then there is the UP where snowmobiles outnumber people.
 
It's not that much different than any other large city. I live 4 miles from detroit city limits.

There are areas to avoid and areas that are perfectly safe. Most of the crime is drug and gang related (black people killing other black people). The downtown area isn't bad, just avoid the outlying neighborhoods and you'll be fine.
 
You don't get listed on the top 10 most dangerous cities by the FBI for being ''not much different" than other cities. And on a side note... Detroit sucks and the only reason id visit is to watch hockey or get tetanus
 
Do you immediately get murdered when entering Detroit city limits? No. Can you have a perfectly safe and fun weekend in the city? Yes. Does Detroit have a stigma? Yes. Are you always one wrong turn away from a ghetto? Yes. Are there really bad areas? Yes. Are there really nice areas? Yes.

If you've never been to Detroit outside of downtown/midtown/foxtown, don't talk about it like you have an opinion.
 
Just going to add another thing.

There is no wrong side of the tracks in Detroit. There are really nice neighborhoods all over the city. It's actually really creepy how one block is super nice and two blocks away can be a ghetto. It changes really quickly in some areas.
 
Your wrong, there isn't much difference between Detroit and most other major cities I've visited at all.

Detroit is just a lot smaller, after the riots everyone moved out of the city to the suburbs. The city is a decaying shell of what it used to be. It's a haven for criminals from the surrounding metropolitan area because of the abandonment of homes and small police force. That's part of the reason the per capita crime rate is so high, the crime is usually brought to Detroit from the surrounding suburbs.

You don't have to worry about random acts of violence as much as you think if your minding your own business.

Detroit may be broke, but our hockey team and baseball team will fuck you up.

 
I grew up in the metro area and spent a ton of time downtown and I can even say its a shithole. Just more of one than it was a while back.
 
Barely, I had to drown myself in a bottle after every game so I could fall asleep.... At least we aren't 5.5 games behind the diamondbacks in the worst division in baseball.
