Denver (MENver??

So I'm finishing up college in nursing school and thinking about moving up to SLC or Denver. I've read a lot recently that Denver is getting so saturated that its cost of living is getting incredibly expensive! Are there still areas in and around Denver that are reasonable or is it that bad! Also SLC how are the summers up there? How is downtown SLC? surrounding areas? For some reason, I have some bias towards Denver being more of the all-around package especially one day with a family! I know this has probably been talked about but I'm chilling with a healing torn retina and would love to hear from you guys!

Also hows the riding (mountain bike ) around Denver? I know the riding is killer around SLC as well as the whole enchilada and moab a little ways out. Always ride in Colorado in durago, tellu, CB, away from denver

I would first worry about getting a job. Both areas are expensive and for some reason people are flocking to them. SLC has the worst smog in the nation. Denver has some of the worst traffic. Not too sure why everyone thinks they are a mecca for the cool outdoors urban living. I would look into areas like Reno or Boise, up and coming cities. Easy access to the mountains, less expensive and still plenty of good times.

do yourself a favor and go to Bend instead, you dont want to live in SLC or Denver lol

This. Denver sucks ass....not sure why so many people think it is the end all be all of outdoors culture. I would do reno/boise or eve. salt lake every day over denver.

Lots of unsung places out there. Reno or boise are much cheaper

While I really like Bend a lot I feel it’s only a matter of time before it’s over run like Denver.

Denver is Mountain View’s in a major metropolis city with weed resulting in a influx up hipster scum and all ways jammed highways.

Honestly op if you want a city life go to either of those two SLC or Denver. If you want really cool mountain life go to somewhere like Salida,CO or Philipsburg,MT.

I've been in SLC for 3 years now. Summer can be brutally hot (>100 F for multiple days at a time) but cooler air in the mountains is only a 30 or 40 minute drive away. Downtown salt lake is pretty small as far as city centers go, but it's a young, lively area. Nightlife isn't going to be the same as Denver or other big cities but you can definitely still go out and have a great time. It's not the same state it was 15 years ago.

Yes, inversions and smog really suck. We can have the worst smog in the nation at times, but it rarely lasts longer than several days before getting cleared out. On the worst years we have between 20-30 red alert days. It's not like we have air quality issues constantly year round. Mostly happens during the winter in extended periods of high pressure.

Can't compare mountain biking as I'm not really a biker, but there are plenty of good trails around.

If you have a dog or are looking to get one in the future, look into the watershed restrictions in Utah. A lot of people move here without realizing you can't bring dogs into the two most popular canyons here and it can be a turn off for some. It's pretty heavily enforced ($500 fines I think).

Housing is relatively cheap here, especially considering the strong economy and especially if you are willing to live a little ways outside of SLC proper.

Hope that helps!

Yeah smog (particulate matter) in SLC is bad in the winter, but Denver has a terrible ozone problem in the summer and it's steadily getting worse.

fuck that, move west of Denver and come shred winter park. We have a sick bike park and also lots of other local bike trails

It's only on 10 chairs of super gauge. It's a stupid idea, half the screens broke and the others have water damage.

Fact is there is no such thing as a "perfect ski town" because if there were such a thing, we'd all be there. You gotta pick your poison and decide which sacrifice is most worth making. For some, the best choice is to cough up the extra $$ to live in CO, for others it's to deal with the nightmare of SLC's people and politics.

My $0.02 is to avoid SLC and Denver because they are the "knee jerk"/first place every skier/snowboarder/outdoor sport wanna-be thinks is worth moving to, and are thus becoming overwhelmingly crowded. Do some research on what else is out there rather than taking everyone's word that denver and SLC are the only options.

Even though the summers are hot and the Mormons are nut jobs, salt lake is infinitely better than Denver because you don’t have to deal with I-70 whenever you want to go play in the mountains.

And whoever mentioned Boise is a complete jerry. You’ll be stuck skiing Bogus Basin, which is garbage.

I lived in a suburb outside of Denver my whole life and went to college in Boulder so I've watched the city change a lot. Apartments and houses went from being affordable to expensive, areas are gentrifying and growing at rapid rates. The area of 5 points went from having thugs and junkies running around to having hip coffee shops and beer gardens. It's reaching its capacity and will likely be a BIG city in the next 10 or 15 years. The problem with this? The city never planned to have such rapid growth. There are only 2 major highways running north and south (1-25) and east and west (1-70) which means the traffic is FUCKED any weekday and sometimes even Saturdays. The mountains are nice but 1-70 traffic is absolute hell on weekends, but if you can ski on weekdays it's not bad at all. From Denver with no traffic you can get to A-basin in an hour and a half and 2 hours to vail. People are generally friendly and obviously the cops and the law are much looser than SLC (no mormon influence.) SLC is also growing but the mormons who still occupy half of the population in Salt Lake county keep things in check. Will the mormons become a minority in the future? Maybe, are they bad people and is it bad living with them? No, it may be kind of annoying for liquor laws and so forth, but they keep things clean and the hooligans out. The skiing in SLC is arguably some of the best in the world in a 45-50 minute drive. Amazing park skiing at park city and great powder skiing and good terrain in little cottonwood canyon. I've never lived in SLC but I've visited plenty of times and have friends at University of Utah who gave me the run down. I'm not going to answer the question you asked because it's up to you, just wanted to state some pros and cons of both cities. Hope you enjoy whichever city you pick!

I think Denver is due to have a pricing correction coming up soon. As legalization sweeps the nation, its pot industry loses its allure and will have a big setback in the future. Not to mention they are trying to slaughter off the oil and gas industry which is a very real industry. Salt Lake City isn’t so much tetering on the brink and may be better long term. I’d choose SLC personally but I like the sports Denver market offers
