Deciding on a cam

Hey guys i'm ready to purchase an HD camera so what should i go with?

I was looking at the HV30, HV40, and the VIXIA HF100 HD

What would be the best quality for the best price? I realize i also have to pay for a tripod, lense, bag, etc. So what would u guys recommend?

Use the searchbar, there is a wealth of information about these three cams on this site. I really enjoy owning a HV30. Don't get the HV40, as far as filming skiing, its the same thing.

Really, Its solid state vs. tapes for your decision.

i think theres a similar thread a little bit down, check that out

basically what ^ said, 40 isnt worth the price difference, and do u want solid state or tape

Right now, IMO, tape > solid state, but that may change soon. It just hasn't happened yet.

I think that's very true as far as consumer cameras go. Once you start getting into p2 and xdcam cameras however, it's a whole different story. But for all intents and purposes of your average newschooler, at this current time tapes are just fine.

If you want to shoot 24p, then absolutely get the HV40 over the HV30. Having to do the inverse telecine process for the PF24 footage on the HV20/HV30 is such a pain. Either way the HV20/30/40 are all great cameras. They do well on auto, but also have plenty of features to play with to get the look that you want.
