Dear Newschoolers

I have been debating about whether or not I should make this thread for a while now, I decided its time. For all of you who know me in real life this will come as no surprise, you probably already know, but for those of you who don't know, I have decided to join the United States Marine Corps. I am going to MEPS next weekend to take my drug test/asvab/physical and should have a date for boot camp shortly after. The reason for this thread isn't to ask you 12 year olds and canadians whether or not I SHOULD do it, my decision is made. I am not some dumb american redneck who wants to join so I can kill towelheads, I like to think of myself as fairly well educated, and I have had plenty of other opportunities (many of which I have fucked up) so this isn't a last resort by any means. I have many reasons, one being getting the fuck out of upstate NY and moving out west someday, that will make it much easier, another is that it will pay for me to go back to college someday, something I regret leaving, and now that I dont have parental funding for that I cant go back, far too expensive. Its also one of the most secure jobs you can have in this day and age, and in my position with no college degree, thats somewhat comforting. Not to mention free health care, and many other benefits, and the fact that I will be part of the best fighting forces in the world.. I realize this is starting to sound like an ad you see on TV and I apologize, I didnt make this to try and persuade anyone to join, that is your own decision; I am only saying these things as why I am joining. Sure, I had to quit smoking pot and I'll have to give up many things, but thats part of the job, but what I get out of the job (not just money) will greatly surpass the sacrifice IMO.

The reason I'm making this long winded thread is because I know of a few people in the armed forces on here, and would like to hear their stories, opinions, advice, what have you. Doesn't matter if its Canadian coast guard, USMC, army, or even if you just want to give your 2 cents, idc, its whatever. What I do ask is that this thread does not turn into a political flame thread, or a US vs canada battle, there are already enough shitty threads like that, so please try to not be an ignorant fuck when you post. (This might be asking too much of NS)

[*sparknotes*] Troll is joining the USMC... thoughts and opinions?

good for you man, i wish you the best!

after looking into to it, i decided the military wasnt for me

but i have quite a few friends that chose that path

also, good call on going oorah

Good shit man. Pick a MOS that you seriously think you'll enjoy. If they don't have what you want, wait a week or two and go back. It's so hard to switch once your in. Your gonna transform in to a new person within the next year. Enjoy NY while you can dude. I wish I was there right now.

It's not so bad though. Boot camp is all in your head.

Do you have a girlfriend?

congrats that takes a ton of bravery. as much as i would like to serve my country, i'd shit myself in battle.
good luck

I'm actualyl looking forward to boot camp, I see it as a personal challenge.

And thank god I have no GF right now... I wouldnt want one going in. Fuck buddies are great though.

props man. it takes a lot of balls to join the military, especially the marines. good luck with everything and just hope you dont end up on the front lines.
be safe man......

awesome fucking icon...

I also forgot to mention the fact that I'm going reserves... so I probably wont get shipped out (who knows though, I am willing to go if they ask), and I'm not gonna be 0311 (infantry) so I should be relatively safe.

hahah they tell you that now...

my mom is in the reserves, and shes been shipped out for four 90-120 day deployments, with like two or three little deployments and shit in between that were just two weeks or so. this is in the past 5 years or so.

Seabees are pretty cool too, thats like... contruction and shit correct? IMO thats one of the cooler parts of the navy, which I almost joined due to the fact that my grandpa was a 23 yr navy vet, but I dont want to spend my whole life at sea, and the marines are badass IMO, I kow that sounds dumb but hey that how my brain works haha.

oh, i almost forgot dude.

good luck to you. stay safe, and have fun. its gonna be rough at times, but it will overall be the experience of your life. theres few better things you can do for yourself.

thanks for serving our country man, if i ever see you somewhere there's a drink on me.

what branch is your mom in? and I'm not holding out too much hope of never getting deployed, I might go active later on but for various reasons I have to join as reserves anyway. If I go I go, thats part of the contract I sign, I have to do what they tell me. I would not mind being sent overseas. (well I would mind missing ski season haha, but hey, what can you do)

passing the drug test next weekend will put you further through the Marine Corp then 90% of this website could achieve anyway, so - good luck and props on making a big decision and rolling with it, not only with enthusiasm but dignity too - it's a tough call to make in this day and age, what with the political shit storms surrounding wars and military.... The british Marines will cover yo ass in service though, so you'll be fine ;-)

Props for a serious thread... for once haha. Honestly, I personally haven't heard great things about the USMC, my dad was in the Navy and always talked shit about the marines. They are probably the most hardcore when it comes to the military. I don't know you as a person, but I feel that the USMC isn't the best choice if you want to further your career later on in life. Both the Navy and USAF provide really good technical training that employers would be interested in. What are your strengths? Even if you didn't like school, what did you go for? what did you enjoy most? These are the kind of questions you should be asking when deciding what branch to go into. My brother was in the Army, and now works for the FBI. I remember when he was choosing between branches, he almost got dragged into being a marine, my dad flipped out at the recruiter and told the guy to never set foot on our property again. If you go to get your physical this weekend, they will pressure you to join and commit that day. DO NOT GIVE IN. Pass what you have to, but take time to decide.

Agreed to some extent. It shouldn't be your #1 reason, especially with the ops tempo you'll see as a Marine.

Its not my number one reason, the number one reason is because I want to be a marine, the fact that I COULD go back to school some day is just part of the benefits IMO. I may never do that, but I would like to. I already have quite a bit of college under my belt, so I dont need to have it pay for 4 years of school anyway. When I get out I may just try to find a job that pays well/ has benefits.

I did one year of Army ROTC. I had the full scholarship, but I didn't like it. I found a loophole which says after the first year you can bounce without any liabilities or owe any money. So I got $45,000 for one year of school payed off. If you are serious about joining the service, ROTC is the best option if you have half a brain. I didn't find it extremely challenging to get the scholarship, so if you place well on your ASVAB, you may want to bring it up with your recruiter. Keep in mind that they are very closed minded and a payed to get you to enlist, not become an officer, even if its in YOUR best interest. Being an officer, you make a decent amount of money, and the leadership and responsibility of commanding people beneath you is a huge bonus on your resume. Employers eat that shit for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

no offense to the air force or anything, but I'm not a pussy. I wanna prove something to myself. Witht eh marines corps pride is a huge factor... when people ask you what I do I can say "I'm a marine"... every other branch of the service... "oh I work on avionics in the air force" or navy or whatever. I can do all those jobs in the marine corps (well, most) and still come out of it with a marketable skill, and still have my pride as well. (this was in no way meant to diss the other branches, they all have their specialty's and are necessary, that's just why I decided USMC)

For this reason:

The Navy, Marines, and Army all have rivalries with each other but will join up together to make fun of the Air Force and Coast Guard.

i dont know you so i honestly couldnt care less, and the only reason i can think of for the making of this thread is that your a shitdisturber

haa haa true..... good one.. thanks for putting our crazy but fuckin awomse country in your sights.

ps enjoy the SICK haircut

I didnt mean that as an insult to all you canucks, its a pretty cool place, and I live not too far from the border, so I've been there many times. free health insurance... whats not to like? I only said that because it seems like there are a multitude or Canadians on this site who like to bash on Amurrica, and why? we are the same people, just live by a different set of laws, and you guys get a little bit less direct sunlight. (maybe THAT explains it!)

Good luck big guy. I'm in ROTC and the Military is a good route to go. If it's what you want then by all means go for it! If you can hit up OCS definitely go for it.

The GI Bill is really legit right now too btw, mad good shit happening with that.

I just wanna add that people who join the chair force tend to hate their lives more so than other branches because of how insanely lame it is (for those comments above).

Yeah, real seabees will never go to see 95% of the time. I'm actually a logistic specialist who got put with them after A school so I'll never see a ship in 4 years. Good deal. A LOT of perks man. I'll get back to ya after softball practice (time diff in Korea is a bitch)

first of all good for you for joining the army and secondly i know that a lot of the army stops in dubai when traveling places so if you go hit me up. I could probably get you a pair of skis to ride and my mate owns a club so its free drinks.

Thanks man, appreciate it, but army =/= marine corps.

And Dubai is def a place I would like to go sometime. How's the pussy over there?

I was talkin dubai, which is a major metrolpolitan area, not irag/afghanistan, which is obviously a terrible place to get laid
