Dealing with knee injuries...?

So long story short I dislocated my right knee in 2007 and 2010 and did PT for awhile each time after. Last skiing season I could tell it was weak. After a long day in the park it would begin to ache and also sometimes when I landed badly or took a crash I could feel it pop out slightly or to the point of it quickly dis and relocate. This would happen maybe 2-3 times a day.

This past school year I took a Strength and Conditioning class for a full year and really worked hard and made quite a bit of muscle. So my knee is stronger but I doubt it is 100%.

My question is should I get a thin brace to wear? Maybe like neoprene? I have a super beefy knee brace that I got when it dislocated in 10'

and you can only wear it for a little while, so this would not be an

option while skiing.

What do you guys that have knee problems do to help out while your skiing.

Yeah I would defiantly get a brace. I had a knee injury in october and had to get 40 or so stitches.. sucked. Now whenever I ride I use this Nike knee brace meant for basketball players. It doesn't affect me at all but keeps my knee safe! hope this helps!

agree^ thin neoprene wrap-type brace even, i wear one often, my knee aches way less then. not sure about a dislocation though, aren't the tendons and stuff weaker then, and it takes longer for them to heal?

Definitely. I shattered my kneecap a couple years back and I had some acheyness like you, and now I wear a neoprene kneebrace every time I ski. It helps a lot

I tore my acl last summer, surgery december 16th. I skied the first time in june with a brace and it felt great! make sure you strengthen the muscles to prevent injury and ONLY wear the brace when you actually ski. if you depend too much on the brace all the time, your muscles will weaken.

i had a slightly torn meniscus and strained IT band this season after takin it to the thug zone a few too many times, and the sports medicine doc gave me a neoprene support reinforced with some metal hinges. I needed support because if i landed backseat the act of standing back up would hurt like a bitch and make my knee weak for the rest of the day. The brace kinda pushed the knee back into its extended position so it took some strain off the knee.

BUT thats just what worked for my specific case. See a sports med doctor/orthopedist, they'll get you exactly what you need.

heres something similar to what I have:

I would definitely recommend skiing with the neoprene knee brace. Also continue to do your PT excercises for the ligaments in addition to the strength training.

Would it be dumb to ski with braces even though I haven't had any injury yet? My one knee usually gets a weird burning and aching sensations while skiing and swimming...

I had microfracture surgery in march from dislocating my kneecap. I will probably use a hinge brace for skiing in the winter

hey just wondering what the rehab was like this meniscus? I think i may have partial tear or strain on mine from a crash 6 weeks ago. Like it feels decent now on a trampoline doing smaller stock tricks, but when I try and tweak a mute it is sooooooo painful. Did you need surgery?

Bumping for some recommended neoprene braces with a quick review from personal experience. Do you guys ride with one on the weaker knee? Is it safe to ride with one on each knee? I've seen in videos that Kaya Turski rides with 2 but maybe she's had problems with both?

Thanks!

still coming back from my knee injury hopefully skiing in jan but ill def wear my don-joy braces whenever i ski from now on

You can definitely ride with braces on both knees. My dad wears a beefy one on the right knee with the ACL injury and then wears a neoprene one on the left knee to protect it from the plastic of the right knee brace. I've done it myself a few times because I don't like the imbalance of having uneven support when I only wear one.

That said for your uninjured knee I wouldn't use a knee brace as something to rely on. Strengthening it is far more important.

knee braces dont do a whole lot, they almost do more damage than good. they make your muscles rely on the brace weakening your knee.

i tore my mcl recently and doc said knee brace would do me noo good, just work out a fuck ton more and work on both calf and ham/quad. its the surrounding muscles that need work as well.

tore my whole knee up junior year of high school... mcl pcl cartilage meniscus the whole deelio. if its something still wrong in your knee. i wore a DonJoy custom ones for football players. its meant to restrict certain lateral movements for the time in which it was healing. not sure if that helps, check the braces out though. get better!!

A neoprene sleeve is only going to help to keep your knee warm (which can make it feel less ache-y) or if you have patellar tracking issues.

Wear a brace if you're recovering from an injury and your doc/pt tells you to. Otherwise, don't bother. It's not going to help and it could hurt.

Good thread, I have found biking in the summer makes my knees so much stronger. Instead of wearing a knee brace (if you havnt been hurt), just go road/mtn biking whenever you can.
