Darkroom

Hey ns.. so i have been working in the darkroom in my school almost everyday and i was wondering if there was any cool effects or tricks i could do to give the photo something different. Thanks K+

Well just the basics, buring and dodging, exposing a certain area to more or less light effectively making that area darker or lighter.

Pretty much this. I assume you're shooting solely black and white?

My favorite trick is opening your cell phone in the darkroom....... oh wait, don't do that. Your teacher and friends will hate you forever.

i have friends that do that already. or they open the enlarger and let the light everywhere. very frustrating.

Yes it is only black and white. But my teacher told me he was gonna teach me how to burn and dodge but never got around to it. Could someone possibly explain it to me?

Dodging: take a piece of wire, a straw, whatever. Maybe take a coin or something else round and tape that bitch on the end, you have just created a dodging wand. While the enlarger is on(printing) wave the wand in fast circular motions over the desired area, this will make the affected area lighter.

Burning: Take a piece of paper or cardboard and cut a hole in it. While the enlarger is on use the hole in the paper to project a beam of light on the desired area, this added light will darken the area.

I could explain way too many tricks I know in the darkroom haha. But if you're just learning the basics of printing I would just work on your dodge/burn skills as well as split filtering, toning, etc. Once you get that down there are so many things you can do by hand that you could never learn them all in a lifetime. I do almost all my work in the darkroom because I can do way more there than I can digitally.

look up Jerry Uslmann. Im sure uv heard of him. Try puting obects in a potograph that arnt there. I like splatering my photograph with develipor and then fix with the splaters. Try some sepia toning and maby a sebatuia efect (i think that is how u spell it) also one time i diped my negitive in candle wax and made a print thre it and it was a pretty cool effect. Hope this helps.

^Make sure there is a point to what you are doing, creating an effect for the sake of it is just annoying. If there is something out of the ordinary in a photo and it isn't integrated, I can't find it in myself to be interested at all.
