Damn, that seems like a head or leg injury to me. That what the copter gets called for. Either you cant get yourself out of there or you took some damage to the head/neck area.

Thinking a little more optimistically, If they were out in a remote sled zone it isn't as if they can have an ambulance just drive in, so it could just be a moderate injury.

Regardless, hope he gets well soon.

^Actually, in the world of emergency medicine, a broken femur is considered a life threatening injury.

Debbie downer :(

I was hoping he'd throw a triple at X Games this year if he was invited.

Damn, this injury is usually from falls from great heights and high speed car collisions. It must have been gnarly. Get well soon Dane.

Only if you're

a) hemophile

b) old

c) not rescued fast enough.

I'm pretty sure a healthy young guy like Dane was never in some kind of life threatening state... although a broken femur must hurt like bitch.

It's scary as shit at first though femurs can heal pretty quick. After crushing PT, I hiked and skied 10 weeks after my injury back in '05, but that was pushing it. In all likelihood, Dane will be off snow until summer. Bones heal, stay positive!

Such a bummer. Dane was having such a great seasin, enjoying the pow pow, so stoked on it. I'm glad it wasn't worse though, considering the extreme terraine.

Same, my friend was playing soccer and he tripped, someone tried to jump over him but their cleat landed on his leg, not only a broken femur but gnarly cleat marks,

This and it's surrounded by important arteries which easily be cut by bone shards and have you bleed out internally in a very short amount of time.

Nooo Dane is one of the few people that I look forward to seeing a segment from every year. Mad vibes go out to him on a speedy recovery.

On another note breaking a femur is one of the most painful things ever, I broke mine racing bmx when I was younger and was in a wheelchair for 3 months

my neighbor broke both his femurs on the first day of a week long skiing trip. shit was gnarly and he couldn't work for months

False. Femurs are always considered a serious possibly lid threatening injury. When you break a bone that big, you can die from blood loss due to the blood filling the inside of that bone. Source: i was part of Ski patrol.

femur is the toughest bone in your body, therefore a broken femur hints to the likelihood of a broken spine. Dane's lucky it wasn't more serious. Vibes for a quick recovery hope to see you shredding again soon Dane!

i heard breaking your femur is one of the most painful injuries you can have, and is comparable to child birth or soemthing like that. in 2nd grade a girl in my class broke hers falling off the monkey bars, but im sure danes was a little more traumatic. vibes

Most protocols I have seen (and worked in) don't even tag it a trauma unless both femurs are broken, at least here in California.

It probably differs from place to place. Here it's considered life threatening due to shock or blood loss. But anyways I really hope Dane has a quick recovery with the minimum amount of pain.

probably because they didn't experience any tissue/muscle tearing with the potential for a femoral artery tear.

i know people who broke their femurs and it can range from being not that bad to being incredibly life threatening. it all depends on how you break it like if the wound is open vs. if it was an impact injury, and many other things.

I broke my femur in a car accident and I must say it is by far the most painful thing I've ever experienced. Vibes to Dane, one of my favorite riders by far.

well i heard they had to wait 2 hours for the heli rescue, so i would consider that pushing the "not rescued fast enough" scenario. And holy shit that must've been a long, painful 2 hours. But luckily Dane is doing well and I know he'll make a strong recovery!!! bummed about this for sure though. Positive vibes Dane!

What most people refer to as a hip fracture or hip dislocation is a fracture or dislocation of the femur. The hip is not a bone, more of an area. That's much, much better news than a fracture. There's actually a special splint EMTs use when it's a fracture that applies traction and is supposed to reduce the pain. As for the comments about such a fracture being life threatening: what I meant was that just because it was broken does not "automatically" mean it is life threatening. In some cases it can be, and that is why you treat the patient and his or her symptoms. Systemic hypo-perfusion can accompany femur injuries, and is life threatening but does not occur in every case.

Hope it doesn't become a recurring injury for him.
