so i want to upgrade from my d5000

how do the d90 and the d7000 compare? i know the d90 is cheaper now because its old technically but is it worth dropping the money to get the d7000. Also is im going to drop 1200 why not drop 1500 and get the d300s... what are the perks for each?

and yes i know nikon's video sucks and no im not going to canon.

Show us some of your work before we can suggest anything. Also you need to tell us whats important in a camera if you want any real help.

If you have the money for the D300s, get that. Dual card slots, faster burst, metal body, more AF points, and a bunch of other cool stuff.

The D7000 has the best video, obviously, and can shoot at higher ISO than the other two options.

The D90 is a great camera if you don't want to spend for the D300s and aren't a videographer. I love my D90, it's good stuff.

D7000 also has magnesium alloy body thats weather sealed. it has 39 af points and 11 cross type. it has dual sd cards and the 300s only has 1 more fps.

Also now that im looking it ahs 16.2 mp vs the 12.3 in the d300s the iso of the d7000 is 100-25600 which is far greater than the d300s as someone said. also what i really like is that it has dedicated buttons for the lv and movie recording.

you could get the D90 on the cheap which is a plus and go for good glass.

Don't listen to the guy above me..comparing mp? really? I've have a 48"X36" print that I took on my 6mp D40. The thing is flawless with no signs of pixels. And if anything, I like having a faster workflow in due to smaller images.

This coming from a D90 user. I wish I had more autofocus points. I wish I had a tad better ISO performance (though D90 is great). Lastly, I never use auto settings so I wish had layout the D300 has being manual.

I think my D90 is great and won't upgrade for anything less than a D700 replacement. Personally, I would buy a cheap D90 and invest in nice lenses and lighting. Thing of what you can get with $1000 of lenses! (that's saying the D90 is selling for $550 used)

the D7000 has 2 user defined modes, its ISO goes from 100-6400 and expanded is 12,800 and 25,600. also you can get a really good set of lenses for both the 90 and 7000. anything that is af af-d or af-s will work perfectly. so you could get the 20-35mm 2.8 af-d the 35-70mm 2.8 af-d and the 70-210mm 4-5.6 or the 80-200mm 2.8 af-d. oh another big push for the 7000 is not only the dedicated buttons for live view and recording but also the 1080p 24 fps and the 720p in both 24 and 30 fps and the continuous af during filming. you are getting a lot more camera in the 7000 than the 90. I would say if you dont mind using some older glass and saving a bit more money i would get the 7000. also i wasnt using mp to judge a camera just stating it as a fact that the 7000 has more than the 300s and 90. but how much sharpness did you lose with that print you made?

i'm in a similar situation but upgrading from a D60 and i'm 95% sure i'm going to buy the D7000. like you i don't really care about the video, but it's nice to have. but what really sticks out to me with the D7000 is the high ISO and it's ability in low light, the magnesium body, the dual memory cards (for video anyways), the 6fps, and the 39 af-points. it seems like a perfect camera for me and i'm really excited to order it.

if i were you i'd go with the D7000. seems like a great choice.

yeah but the D300s is $300 bucks more right? i just skimmed through all the tech specs and besides the extra fps, what more are you getting with the D300s? i think i'd rather have the D7000 than the D300s but i'm probably missing something...

Pro body vs non. More AF points. Higher FPS. CF instead of SDHC. More dedicated buttons (besides LV)

dont get caught up in the MP wars. 12.3 is plenty, and to be honest lower pixel density also means better high iso performance most times.
