Cyber-terrorism

Iranian's successfully hacked the US Army's Predator drone video feed a few days ago (it was all over CNN, find a news source if you must).

and just this morning, the Iranian's hacked twitter:

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/12/18/twitter.hacked/index.html

It seems those pesky terrorists have finally caught the digital wave... whats next? Banks? Major news sites? Terrorists can do much more damage to the west by attacking the information infrastructure that we so heavily rely upon every day.

The implications of this new form of 'cyber-terrorism' could lead to FAR less privacy on the internet, an increased demand in the internet security sector, and even Dystopian cyberpunk defense networks!

discuss.

Facebook is already sketch as fuck, Although would probably cause chaos as it's many peoples life. However I'd guess they target online banking sometime in the near future.

I really hope they take down twitter, I hate twitter. It's the epitome of self importance. Go cyber terrorists, go.

Very interesting. I doubt it was actually Iran though. Why would they want to cause attention to themselves for a task that is quite fruitless?

Meh, just to piss people off? Iran doesn't really care what people think I believe.

As a side-note, consider this. Take a look at Twitter, and the way it seems to be this one massive ball of consciousness . Almost a sort of group think. Even consciousness has become globalized. Can't you see it as another step of society moving toward a world society/government?

globalization is definitely being pushed along with the emergence social networking. We all put our identities out there on the internet, and it allows us to interact with people across the globe with relative ease (even the language barrier is being minimized).

online-persistent worlds like World of Warcraft and the Sims allow you to create digital avatars and engage in digital relationships with other people. As technology advances, these relationships are only going to become more life-like.

Germs and viruses are a growing threat for worried mothers around the globe. Perhaps people will begin to limit their interactions and strictly communicate online.

I still think we're a long way from any kind of global union (too many cultural and religious differences across the globe), but at the same time, an "online culture" has emerged and is slowly sucking everyone in.

hahahaha whats worse than killing millions of americans?

shutting down myspace and facebook leaving everyone lonely and having to live the real world

it very well could have been anyone posing as the "Iranian Cyber army" just to stir the pot. Regardless of who it was, the internet is the perfect vehicle for "terrorists" to spread hatred, fear and loathing on a global scale.

My iGoogle feeds are constantly updating with news of suicide bombings and innocent people dying. So in a way, the internet is already working in their favor.

But attacks on the information system itself could be very detrimental to the function of westernized societies.

really wow never figured they would have someone that talented to do that and about taking over japan The US should take over canada so you can go there skiing for free without a passport

I doubt the Iranian government would approve of a online attack of twitter just because they "don't care what people think". If they actually wanted to use their Iranian Cyber Army they would attempt to hack into our governments security networks which are 43049230941801 times more secure then Twitter. So why "show off" by hacking twitter.

mm, yeah, nice to see people in this thread actually took the time to look at the link.

or not. it clearly states that the 'Iranian Cyber Army' is not even confirmed to be connected with Iran. it was probably just a couple of pissed off hackers who happen to be Iranian.

Even though the OP just said that they hacked into the Predator Drone's video feed that the military utilizes. You would be surprised how much info gets leaked out from govt agencies. Not to long ago thousands of war veterans social security numbers and personal info were released. Granted this was from a stolen laptop of an employee, but having a crazy ass secure network is only one part of information security. Having stupid workers take High Value Information out of the secure complex is just as much of a concern from an information security standpoint.

Or just some racists bastards who want to give Iran some bad PR.
The Predator Drone thing is most definitely real, but I have a feeling that Twitter is just a prank.

after the elections; people used twitter to organize protests against the results. if you control peoples way of coming together as a group over the internet then you prevent them from massing against you in real life.

not that secure...

http://www.theblackvault.com/wiki/index.php/The_Gary_McKinnon_Case

The dude was just looking for aliens, and he gets into Defence, Army, and NASA networks?

You think this stuff doesnt always happen? Twitter isnt hard to do, nor is NS... You just have to know how...

Second of all, It was a prank. If it was really Iran, they would not display something like that. Its just some dude trying to cause a stir, just like everyone else

And in this case, its not a Hacker, but a Cracker... Look it up

INCOMING PATRIOT ACT ON TEH INTRANETZ! don't worry the government will save twitter from the terrorists we just need to sign over all of our rights!

also didn't 4chan hack ashton kutchers twitter a while ago.? not impressed.

People say "hacking" when theres really no hacking involved. You dont hack someones facebook or twitter... you just guess their password a shitload of times until you're right.

And im pretty sure this is going to lead to some sort of Patriot Act on the internet... fun times.

And here I thought hacking looked like this:

hackers.JPG

so a few a-rabs figured out how to use a computer....Do you realize how much more threatening Russian hackers are? Russia idolizes kids who get caught hacking into American banks and steal hundreds of thousands of dollars. When they are caught they don't even get sent to jail.

good point about the stealing of computers. With the predator drone though the only reason that was hacked was because the feed from the drone to the ground was unencrypted so any retarded 2 year old baby could have hacked it. I was merely referring to somebody physically over in Iran trying to remotely hack through our firewalls and such

But you have to realize that 3 super-genius-virgins from MIT could have done this.

Or some like Russians last time.

Or some crazy ass Asians.

I'm also not to worried about our fucked up media being fucked up anymore.

Predator drones getting hacked though, that makes me shit my pants.

thank you. i was unaware that they don't encrypt that. That's very surprising actually that they left the data from the drone so vulnerable to interception. I wouldn't say its impossible to hack into our governments networks, anything is possible and everything has vulnerabilities, even the best security controls that are implemented.

Lol cyber terrorism. Not at all. These guys are just fighting back again our invasion. If the role were switched we simply say they were heroes or in this case that we successfully hacked into the enemy's video feed.

This whole "terrorism" thing is getting so annoying

As for "cyber terrorism" leading to less privacy and safety on the internet. Your government is leading the charge for that one. You have far more to worry about from them than some "cyber terrorists" in the middle east.

they don't have to be in the middle east.

what if some group were to shut down the online banking systems or take control of a major news network?

(think 'live free or die hard')

they could bring it back online. many large companies have contingency plans called disaster recovery plans that they implement to keep running if their business was interrupted in some way. they could shutdown the entire system if absolutely necessary to stop the attack

the twitter hack didnt bother me whether it was fake or not but it is crazy how Russia and China idolize their hackers that mess with anything connected to the US

Not that it relates to this thread but it seems like people dont quite know that Iranians and the Iranian gov have quite different stances regarding America. The gov hates us but many people in the country are quite fond of Americans. That and Iran has alot of highly intelligent people who if they wanted to could hack just about anything.

really? im pretty sure everyone in the middle east lives in a cave and praises allah whilst strapping bombs to themselves. where do you get your information?

The all hate us because were "to free". They hate it, so they hat us.

It has nothing to do with out constant invasions over there for years. Def simply because we are "to free"

interesting article. i was aware that they held competitions like this, but I had no idea that the US government was/is so heavily interested. good to know.
