what are the cutouts at the tips of some skis for? i see a pair with them every now and then but haven’t put enough thought into them to figure out what they could possibly be used for

I hope this is a joke answer

not helpful, and it's not that stupid of a guess

i think they're just for weight though. never really looked into it cause i'm not the target audience for any of that stuff

Marketing reasons.

"Our skis have this new technology (hole In the tip, asymmetrical tip, a pin,) and it makes you 0.0001 seconds faster"

Unless they're for skins, most likely a gimmick to try and differentiate their skis.

Rossignol Soul 7 comes to mind with their see through "honey comb tip"... looks cool, probably doesn't do anything.

The honey comb tip actually did serve a purpose. The cutouts in the tip helped cut down on the swing weight. Since that ski was directional, there was more ski in front of the bindings than behind them. The cut outs served to cut weight and make the ski easier to turn and to feel more balanced, rather than tip heavy.

Just read up on some of the “Joy” skis line, which I’m pretty sure these are from. It looks to be 100% marketing for “lower weight” and “lower swing weight”.

Have you ever looked at your ski boots and noticed how much random, stupid jargon is written on them? Marketing

It also might be a strategy to keep the tips laminated together. It looks better than the cheesy metal/plastic tip protectors

I’ve always wondered and yeah really have no clue. My friend has a pair of those heads too I don’t get that little slit.
