Cut helmet to fit icons?

has anyone else done this? I'm currently trying but it isn't working too well.

If so post pics, or explain how you did it.

i'm trying it on an old helmet first. wouldn't do it to my good one. I've heard of a couple people who've done this.

considering cutting an entire section out of the foam and the gluing the separate pieces back on the plastic.

It seems like your head safety is more important than using icons. just throw in some earbuds and save your own life

But then he can't wear his cool icons.

Take this guys advice and just get some earbuds. Or figure out a different way to use you icons without cutting your helmet apart because that just sounds like a dumb idea.

You have to actually be stupid. This will kill the integrity of the helmet, you may as well not wear one at all.

Just wear buds

i wear earbuds when i use my helmet and icons with a hat. if you start carving foam out of the helmet it will still protect you but not as much. if you really like skiing with your icons just wear a hat and don't fall on your head. or just put the back of the icons behind your helmet.

The whole point of the padding is to compress when you hit it. Last season I took a crash and broke my collar bone and shoulder blade. I'm not really sure what happened right after I fell, I vaguely remember trying to say my abc's getting to p and saying fuck it. Fortunately I had the sense to ski to the patrol hut when I couldn't move my arm.

Point of the story: I took a look at my helmet and saw where I must have hit my head and the normally 3/4 inch or so foam had been compressed to less than a 1/4 inch of width. Foam is pretty much the crux of a helmet so cutting it out or modifying it in any way is just plain dumb

If you carve out any foam, the helmet is straight up worthless

/rant turned out too long. Sorry

my buddy actually did do this. worked well for helmet fit, dont think it makes the helmet too safe though.

Maybe just get some lowriders, take off the earpieces, and sew them to the nylon straps where the earpieces used to be?

Or just wear earbuds....

but then he wont be super cool and will look different then everyone else!
we cant have that, now can we?

I've something for you that's way more easy !

Take off your earpads on your helmet but you need to wear it with a beanie and put each side of the icons in the triangle and make them pass behind your neck..

I've ride all the past winter like this and it works very fine and the quality of sound is enough good !

i hope you aren't planning on falling on your head too much.....
if you're just doing it to show other parkrats you're a real ghetto hoodrat and you can wear icons under your helmet, you're doing a great job!

SO MUCH HATE

i did it and it worked perfectly.

and i obviously wouldn't do it to my legit helmet, i did it to an old bike helmet i ski in sometimes.

posting pics........

im pretty sure the icon softs were made for this with the soft plastic at the top, oh and you could always wear them upside down and out the back whilst tightening your helmet and placing under your goggle band.

dude thats fucked why don't you just not wear a helmet then? you might as well if you're going to do that to your helmet

.... you're still going to ski in it.

Honestly, you've done the equivalent of disabling the airbag and seatbelts in your car, all in the quest of looking like a badass.

Wait.... does this mean helmets are cooler than hats now? Cause thats effectively what you've made there, something that looks like a helmet but will act like a hat for all intents and purposes when you fall.

you should obviously tear your Icons apart. Take the speakers out of the headphones and stick them in your ears. When this is accomplished take the shell of the Icons glue them to the outside of your helmet, this way everybody knows that you bought a shitty pair of headphones. problem solved!

Are you an engineer? I highly doubt it because of the fact that I am starting to believe you are slightly mentally handicap. Lets see if I can put this in simple terms

Foam is supposed to compress. If no foam is there, it can't compress. You cut foam out of a structurally sound helmet thus degrading its integrity. Really hard to understand, I know

Would you repair a bridge with paper clips and duct tape? No then it'd be a shitty bridge. Whoever said it before, I hope you hit your head and become incapable of producing offspring

are you an engineer fuck tard?

the plastic is 95% of the support in that kind of helmet, and 90% of the foam is still there, think of how much less safe it actually is.

No I'm not an engineer and I don't pretend to be one either.

If the plastic is mostly the support, you bought a shitty helmet. The outershell is suppose to absorb and distribute the energy of the impact while the padding provides the actual stopping distance sort of like a shock absorber. By taking out even a small bit of the foam padding, you might as well take a kitchen pot and use that as a helmet

Yeah i did it, works real well and helps keep the helmet snug fit.

Just put the icons lying in the helmet and traced them. The cut down the ears the thickness of the icons to make the thicker part fit, and dont have to worry about the top because its so thin.

Heres pics:

yeah, it is a shitty helmet. i said that. it's a fuckin like old skateboard helmet i found lying around in my garage.

If I defined it properly you probably would not understand it anyways, but let's just say that you have removed parts of what absorbs the impact in a helmet of this kind, leading to it not functioning properly (not saying it would have been good anyways). And yes, I am actually an engineer (Master's degree in physical metallurgy. Hence most of my work concerns metals, but I still got a good amount of basic, all-around knowledge)

I have in no way called you out for being stupid or anything like that, I was merely trying to point out that the helmet will no longer protect you in the way it was meant to. Therefore you should not consider it any safer than a beanie (even though it might feel safer).

Just put the headphones around the back of your head/neck. Now you have a helmet that functions the way it is supposed to and you can still wear your shitty headphones

Reaaaaally, i kinda doubt hes going to take a blow to that part of the head that hard... for the most part a helmets just going to reduce injury and stop you from bleeding/splitting your head.. seeing as where he cut the foam out if he were to fall on that part of the helmet, id be more concerned about a neck injury.. all i want out of a brain bucket is the piece of mind that nothing is going to spear me in the head when i fall. I think what hes done would greattly reduce chances of injury compared to not wearing a helmet..

I cant wear earbuds while I ski. They always start to hurt my ears after like the first 15 minutes of wearing them. I dont know if its the cold or what.

To the OP dont cut anything out of your helmet. If anything cut the icon strap off and connect the earpieces with duct tape or hockey tape to go under the helmet.

thank you. think of it this way to the haters: i like my headphones, i do in fact like the way they look and that they are more comfortable than ear buds, and this is definitely much safer than not wearing a helmet at all. also, you have no reason to be angry at me for doing this since it is myself, not you taking any risks, and this would only make the helmet less useful in very rare situations, and not by much. If you do think you know a lot about engineering than you must know that most specifics are for very rare situations. oh and to who =ever it was that said i was trying to look "badass", i'm not, and why do you care how other people want to look?

there's no haters, you're just really stupid. Why would you buy an helmet and destroy it to wear headphone underneath it ?
