Custom gore-tex jacket

i found this store in seattle that sells gore-tex fabric and i want to make my own custom jacket. does anyone have experience working with this material?

Anyway i think it would be really cool to have a custom tall gore-tex jacket.

have fun with that, unless you're really good with a sewing machine your jacket will be no where close to waterproof. not to mention you need to know how to tape the seams, and various other aspects of creating a proper ski jacket. (how to shape a hood properly, add pockets, elastic waist bands pow skirt etc etc.)

You definitely need to get good at sewing and getting the fit right first. The stores not going anywhere, so you should practice a lot with some cheap material and get the cut dialed before you even attempt this with expensive goretex. Like the dude above said, there's more to good waterproofing than just the fabric.

i have practiced a ton and have the sizing right, i can buy seam tape and all the other supplies, i was just wondering if anybody has any experience with this material.

Finally found Seattle Fabrics huh? It's pretty easy, just be patient. Making the pattern the size you want is the hard part. I made these pants with stuff from Seattle Fabrics:

The seam tape is easy to use and works really well. I was going to make a matching jacket, but never got around to it. It's been over 2 years now and the pants have no problems and have help up great. Take your time and you will be fine. I didn't use Gore-tex because they didn't have the color I wanted back then, so I just used some Ultrex, which is normal outerwear material. O yeah, I almost forgot. You will need to get a special Teflon foot for your sewing machine to slide over the membrane on the inside of the fabric. Other than that, just remember to think before you sew. And have fun!

You can pm me if you have any questions. It's been a couple years now since I did it, but I should be able to remember.

you have to ask that and you want to make your own jacket? i predict a fail in your futur

Go to Jo-Ann's or a sewing machine store and ask them. They will know what you are talking about. The foot is the little fork that clamps down on the material and the needle sews through. You can't use the normal metal one because it will stick to the membrane on the inside of the outerwear too much. I'm pretty sure it's a Teflon based one if I remember right, but it's commonly used for outerwear purposes, and I think leather too. Just tell them you are going to make outerwear and need the special foot. I don't think they were model specific, but I am not positive.

i just googled it and i now know what it is, i have had one a while but just called it a foot, i use it to make non waterproof outerwear.
